Luncheon for Mayolo & Post Office News

Did you know Mayolo is retireing? Our very friendly and helpful Post Master for one of the smallest post offices in the United States is leaving us! Mayolo has always been a bright spot in our day on Palomar. Getting the mail has been a social event on this little mountain. Mail is up by about 11 am. Often our visits to pick up the mail are planned about that time. We will miss Mayolo’s smiling face at the window!
There is a card for Mayolo inside the General Store. If you haven’t already signed it, your note and signature would be nice to add.
You are invited to a Retirement luncheon this Thursday honoring his years of service to this community. Mike Pique and Jeannie ordered a Jilbertos “party special” with tacos, enchiladas, pollo asado and quesadillas (vegetarian), rice, beans, chips and salsa. Mike picked up paper goods, Katie is bringing a cake and napkins and we’ll have a big bowl of watermelon for all. If you would like to bring something to share, that would be welcomed.
You might want to pop in the General Store and pick up something cold to drink. Mike is accepting donations toward the lunch. Thank you.
I saw Lee Baker hosing off the patio in front of Mother’s Kitchen today and it will be set up with tables and chairs. Come help set up at noon on Thursday and we’ll all celebrate Mayolo when he gets his lunch break at 12:30.
What is going to happen to our little Post Office? I noticed it has been closed much of the last week. So, I called Pauma Valley PO several times and it rolled to a fax machine. The nice gal at the Valley Center PO gave me an update for you. She said the gal in Pauma is often there by herself and so busy it is hard to answer the phone. The VC gal is short-handed, too, but sends down an extra staff person when she can. Right now the mail will be delivered to Palomar and put in boxes during the week but they don’t have the staffing to have the window open. Windows are open at the Post Offices off the mountain.
See you Thursday, July 28th
Noon to help set up, 12:30 to Party with Mayolo and your mountain neighbors!

Yes, we’re still here! What’s in escrow?

Some of you thought we’d slipped away to Missouri…. not yet! So busy with Real Estate, staging, selling properties and still taking listings!!!
The Off-grid ultra modern on the South Grade is in escrow. The buyers had their property inspection yesterday and all is well. They are sure going to enjoy that amazing view.

Yes, this one is new but already spoken for! The sellers had a huge tree above the cabin that quite obviously decided it would rather be firewood, so that work was done and some other cleanup and staging. We were still in the middle of some projects when I reached out to the neighbors letting them know that ‘Sweetwater Cabin’ was coming up. The first ones decided to pass, but another said YES!!! Yes, yes, yes! Never fear, one more little cabin is in the wings so please stay tuned!

The buyers for the Crayola Cabin said have been up to see property with me about 10 times. When they walked in this cabin it was love at first sight. You just never know! The 10th time made their dream come true.
More listings heading your way soon!
Bonnie Phelps, still at my desk on the mountain!

Horse Experience? Stables? Caretaker?

We have a family considering a property for sale on Palomar. They would be part time but their horses full time. You horse people know these wonderful animals need to be fed and cared for twice a day. Open to a job caring for horses?
Another option might be bording the horses in stables in Pauma Valley area.
Also, a possibility might be to provide housing on the property for a caretaker’s position.
Interested? Simply reach out to me and we’ll go from there.
Happy Trails,

Welcome Angelica and Cynthia, New Neighbors

When Angelica and her daughter, Cynthia, came up to see cabins, they knew exactly what they were looking for. Angelica grew up in a little rural town in Mexico. She loved being in nature surrounded by trees and how peaceful it was.
I remember her glancing through the cabin and with sparkling eyes saying, “It’s perfect”. I could actually tell long before she spoke, that she was going to be the next owner of the cozy cabin in the woods.
Many of you will be excited to hear about her work. For the past 19 years, Angelica has cleaned homes and vacation rentals. She of course would like to shorten her commute (much to the dismay of her clients on the coast). When you have a need for a house cleaner simply text her at 760-818-3244.
Cynthia has been working as a dental assistant and reminds us all to floss!!!

Need tree work done?

Here is a before and after of some tree work Israel and his crew did at our place. I’ve been planning this post for a couple days but just a few minutes ago our resident turkey mom paraded by my desk to show off how fast her chicks are growing up. So, that became my ‘after’ photo for you.
Trees are just like children, they grow up so fast. The canopies on our oaks were almost touching the ground and we had a lot of branches past their prime. I had the canopy lifted a bit last week, but decided to lace the trees and really have the job done right. Israel has worked for us over the years and and is such a pleasure to have on the job. So fun to watch. The more he waved his chainsaw up in our trees, the more areas came to mind that needed his skill, too. His chipper cuts the slash so fine which makes a great ground cover under the trees to put that nourishment right back into the soil.
When you need his services, shoot him a text as he is usually up in a tree! Israel Guevara 760-420-2519
He will have his crew at two more brand new listings over the next few days if you’d like to see him in action. Or, check out my recent post on Facebook for more pix and a couple fun videos: https://www.facebook.com/bonnie.phelps.palomar

Need a new roof?

Photos of the new roof we had installed in 2019 popped up in my FB memories today. I saw Pollie recently finishing up a cabin up here. We chatted and think he is about ready to start his 18th roof job on Palomar. Thought there might be someone else who might appreciate his service, too. “Pollie” Varona, his brother and crew are so nice to have on the job and we were so pleased with the results. His price also came in lower than other bids.
Here is a tip: Don’t be tempted to just add a layer over what you have on the roof now. I couldn’t believe the wood damage under our composition shingles in some areas; around the fireplace, in the valleys where we had some leaking and under the satellite and internet dishes (they are mounted differently now). Pollie and crew does it all, so repairs happened without any delays.
Call or Text: Pollie Varona 760-519-0697
Here’s the disclaimer: We have no tie to the above and cannot guarantee the product, service or satisfaction. Yes, we were very pleased with his work but you are on your own.

Fireworks from Palomar

Fourth of July is coming up celebrating our country’s independence! Over the years, we’ve enjoyed so much watching the fireworks from a lookout on the mountain top. 17 has been our magic number. We’ve been to several parties where we could see fireworks from 17 cities! It depends on how clear the flatlands are but I do have a list here of cities you could watch for:
Saturday night you might see fireworks in National City and Sunday night over Mission Bay
Monday Night, 4th of July fireworks for 2022. Unless noted otherwise, all start at 9pm.
The most fun to keep an eye on over the years has been on Catalina Island. In the past, their fireworks are still running, long after the others have had their fanali.
Camp Pendleton at Del Mar Beach starts at 8:45
Carlsbad Legoland 8:30
Carlsbad Park Aviara Hotel
Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center
Coronado Glorietta Bay
Del Mar Fairgrounds
El Cajon at Kennedy Park
Escondido Grape Day Park
Imperial Beach Pier Plaza
La Mesa at Lake Murray
Poway High and Poway Sportsplex
Ramona Middle School
San Diego Bay
San Marcos Bradley Park
Santee at Town Center Park
Seaworld at about 9:50
Vista Brengle Terrace Park
Let the Shows begin!

Need a good worker?

Do you need some help around your property? Jose Contreras lives close by at the La Jolla Reservation. He responded to my post looking for a weed eater guy. But, after working for me all last week, I found out he does a lot more than weed eating, yard clean up and chain saw work. He was a forman at a cement company, has done a lot of framing and experienced with baseboards and other carpentry. He was such a pleasure to have checking off my long list of things to do. Very polite, concensienous and hard working. You can reach Jose on his cell at 442-350-9864.
Bonnie Phelps, yes a new listing coming up, ready for a new owner!
