Mountain Lions are good Jumpers!

Yesterday a mountain lion jumped a 7 foot fence  and grabbed a goat for a snack.  A worker was cleaning the pen, raised his pitch fork and yelled at the lion.

The lion was a big guy, approximately 200 pounds, glanced his way, took one leap with that goat in his mouth and cleared the fence. The fencing was actually 6 feet, and above that was a foot of the barbed wire angled to the outside.  Didn’t seem to bother this local, out off Canfield Road.  Just FYI.

Need a Weed Whacker?

got weeds

It is that time of year again!  With our frequent Spring rains, we sure have happy weeds on this mountain!

Your Fire Safe Council has put together a list of local resources for all property clean-up needs.  Simply go to our website and click on Local Resources.  You’ll find four options to have your weeds go away.

We have had more names for you in the past.  However, in updating this list, I believe I spoke to all and the others are totally booked.  If you know of someone to be added to our Resource list, please let me know.  We don’t want to leave anyone out.

Snow Plow Blade?

IMG_4404   IMG_4394

Would you like to ‘Plow with the Storm?’.  Glenn Secola has his snow plow for sale.  This attaches to the front of your 4WD and then a small control box slips inside to cab, over your window.  Easy beasy.  Call Glenn 760 742-0411.

Who knows?  If this cold weather keeps up and brings a little moisture, you just might get to use that plow sooner than you thought!

Have YOU registered?

Cecilia.JPG

Last Fall Cecelia Borland drove all the way over to Cymamaca to sit in on an all day class that she has been raving about and learned so much!  Now she is out thinning the cedars to 15 to 20 feet apart, so they can have sun on all sides and survive the next drought.  We are going to have the same great class, with the same trainers, right here on Palomar.

From:  Cecelia Borland

“What a great experience! When I found out about this free class, I drove over to Cuyamaca for the day.  I was so impressed with the presenters, JP Harris and Clay Howe.  Excellent communicators, who have years of experience both managing fires and training firefighters.

I learned so much about reading terraine, evaluating preparedness and defensibility and how best to preserve our home in case of fire. Living where we do, I thought it so important to better understand fire behavior, weather conditions, and survival techniques.  So glad I went.

I would certainly encourage everyone who lives on Palomar to attend this class – you will be fed lunch, too. And it’s FREE! What a deal!”  Cecelia Borland

Here is how to Register:  http://resourceconserverationdistrict.formstack.com/forms/palomarwui

June 18th  – 8 am to 4:30  Held at our Fire Department.  Come on out and learn with your neighbors.

Here is the Flyer: http://www.palomarproperties.com/wuifiretrainingflyer.pdf

It is also waiting for you on our website:  http://www.mypalomarmountain.com/firesafecouncil

Dogwoods

dogwood at baileys

In my travels, I was turning around the other day at Bailey’s Palomar Resort. When I saw the sun shining on these beautiful dogwoods, I had to jump out and take this for you.  The  dogwoods in the State Park are loaded with flowers this year, too.

If you haven’t seen Bailey’s website in a while, there is a lot of fun history, camping and rental options waiting for you there. Take a look!

Just had to Share

bus

Invited to a mountain birthday party last weekend.  When I walked up to the cabin, this VW Bus caught my eye.  One of the guests found the perfect place to pitch their tent.  Just had to share.  (Thanks for the invite and Happy Birthday Nick!)

New Neigobors – The Stock Family

IMG_4457

Sitting behind a desk all day has been a huge motivator for Kevin to have a cabin for their family.  Rachel has been a hair dresser and recently got her Real Estate license so this cabin has been the perfect recipe to de-stress!  They wanted Jack, Noah and Asher to build forts, play in the dirt, help chop firewood and experience cooking dinner ’round the campfire.  Their dream is coming true!  The kids will also be learning some fine craftsmanship and carpentry skills as they help with remodeling and building projects. Lots of fun happening at the cabin as they usually have friends are there, too.  Making some great memories on Palomar!

New Neighbors – Guy Schmidt and Oreo

guy and oreo

Guy has been a ‘camping parcel’ landowner for about 2 years/  When the cabin adjacent to him came available he didn’t hesitate.  Guy and Oreo love spending time on the mountain as a relaxing getaway whenever they can.  They really enjoy meeting and talking with others who call Palomar home. Guy has always cherished the mountains and nature.  He also is interested in all of the history of the original settlers here and the life they endured to be on the mountain those 100 plus years ago.  Now with a real cabin, with indoor plumbing, a wood stove, and even a furnace, and all the luxuries of home, he might even retire up here someday!
