South Grade CLOSED Oct. 22nd

Sitting at my desk, I noticed a pretty fun convertible slow down out in our driveway. Then, it kept on going and stopped at the lookout across from us. My phone rang. Ron Schramm was across the road, waving at me, asking if he could stop by.

This turned out extra-special because seeing his car pull in, I wanted to go for a ride! Ron’s friend, John, gave up his seat and that dream came true and resulted in the quick little video for you!

You might notice the steering wheel is on the ‘wrong side’ of the car! Well, that is because the cars are English. The company was formed in 1952. The cars are pretty rare as only about 100,000 were built in the 70 years and are all hand made. To put this in perspective, an American car plant turns out about 3000 cars in a day. Ron’s Lotus is a 1964 model and he is the fourth owner of the car. It has a 1.6 liter engine with about 130 horse power. Lotus cars are still in production today but are pretty sleek; similar to a corvette. Ron’s wife, Candy, made the comment that his vintage model is more like a ‘tin can’. She does have her own 2014 that she much prefers as it includes doors, windows, a roof, air conditioning, a stereo and all the good stuff.

The South Grade on Palomar Mountain will be closed for the day.

Ron got the blessing from the Palomar Mountain Community Support Group to have the ‘hillclimb’ with his San Diego Lotus Car Club. They have also coordinated with the Fire Department so it will in no way interfere with the emergency capability. 65 cars will be participating in the run. The road is closed in the interest of safety for everyone. Electric message signs will be reminders along Hwy 76. CHP officers will be at the top and at Purcell Road, where the South Grade will be closed. There will be no motorcycles, bicycles, trucks or anything other than the Lotus cars on the South Grade from 7am to 5pm. Volunteers will be on the mountain much earlier setting up. The run will begin at approximately 8 am.

You’ll be able to travel up or down that day via the East Grade or for those with a little more of a spirit of adventure, you might brave Nate Harrison.

Would you like to watch? Check out the Run from the lookout across from the Fire Station, on East Grade, where you’d have a front row seat.

Do you have a vacation rental? You’ll want to pass this info on as some of the travelers might want to watch, too.

For more info, simply visit https://sandiegolotusclub.org and click on WCLM 2022 for the West Coast Lotus Meet.

Thanks for the fun ride, Ron!

Would you like your own excavator?

Thought you might like to see a peek of my busy days in Real Estate; watching a pro with his mini excavator. It was delivered a couple days ago and I did ask Don to see if there was a key in it so I could play. I do believe I could find a use for this toy every day at some of my listings!

Fun Free Newspaper from the Roadrunner

Yesterday the Valley Center Roadrunner newspaper sent out the following message:

Due to unexpected issues with our printer today, the Roadrunner this week is available for no cost below. We’ll be sending a letter to all of of our active subscribers and automatically adding an additional two months to your subscription for the inconvenience.

The editor, David Ross owned a cabin up here for a few years. He mentions the Mountain in a couple of the articles. It was fun to go through the paper and catch up on the latest. Thought you might enjoy it, too. You’ll see the pumpkins are ready for picking at Bates Brothers. There is a Fire Safety Expo tomorrow and lots more. You can even read all about a Royal Rendezvous in 1933!

Click to see this week’s Valley Center Roadrunner.

Great little paper, isn’t it.

Yes, you can subscribe, too! Have the paper delivered each week in the mail or on-line.

Enjoy!

Waiting on a Well

One of my listings up here has had a well-share with a neighbor for a few years. Owners decided to have a new one drilled so each property will have it’s own.

We were so blessed to have Chad with Acme Well Drilling fit us in. He has drilled quite a few wells on Palomar and so much of the back country. But, Chad won’t drill unless his buddy Dario is there first. Dario brings a fresh willow branch with him and in just a minute finds a place to drill. So fun to watch. Now we’re just waiting on the permit. Then we’ll get Chad back with his rig and see how much water shows up!

‘High Mountain Home’ Music at Lazy H

It was very special the last time we were at Lazy H to hear Dutch and Bruce sing my all-time favorite song that Dutch wrote; High Mountain Home.

Dutch has written beautiful songs woven with some of his family history, and tells of his love for the mountain that so many of us share.

Friends for nearly 50 years, Dutch Bergman and Bruce Druliner look forward to every time they can sing and play their guitars together.

Tomorrow night is another chance to come on out to one of their concerts! Play that video while you make your reservation – Thursday the 29th at Lazy H Restaurant!

HIGH MOUNTAIN HOME

By Dutch Bergman

The sunshine and blue skies
The snow storms and thunder
This mountain has been home to me
I work here and live here
And I never shall wander
‘Cause I’ve seen all that I need to see
Some beautiful places – lots of nice people
I hope to see them again
But nothing can change this feelin’ inside me
This mountain is my closest friend

I sweat in the summer
From hours in the saddle
And I shiver when the winter winds blow
I dream of the spring time
And the smell of new cattle
And ridin’ all the back trails I know
Laid back in my bedroll with the night all around me
Every star is like a jewel in the sky
Sleep comes easy for a trail weary cowboy
As the crickets chirp their lullaby

And I’ll never surrender my memories
Of a full moon on December’s first snow
Or the look in your eyes on a quiet night
As we lay in the fire’s soft glow
This feelin’ is flowing like a river inside me
And the water is the blood in my veins
I’m tied to this mountain by the bonds of my fathers
And that’s stronger than any man’s chains

I’m tied to this mountain by the bonds of my fathers
and that’s stronger than any man’s chains.

You’ll come out now, ya hear!

Like to know your approximate property corners?

Recently I sold 40 acres down in Pedley Valley. Think this was the 4th time I sold that land, I should know the corners by now!!! A few owners ago had it surveyed but there was one corner I hadn’t been to. It is the southerly corner, to the west of the old Pipeline Road. It is way back in on that north slope of Crestline. Steep, very steep!

The new owners wanted to see the corners. That is understandable but this is very rough country. I downloaded a new app. This app had taken me to the surveyed corners on a pretty level piece of land but for this very steep Pedley corner I didn’t have too much faith in it working properly.

Ok, I need to say that I am not a surveyor, nor do I pretend to be. Just trying out a program that another Realtor pointed me to and having fun with technology. Don’t need to go to the gym these days, just hike out and play with the app!

The owners and I drove as close as we could, then started following the little blue dot on my ipad, way down the steep canyons and back up again, over logs, past the deer, under hangers and finally got to where the corner was to be. That little blue dot stopped us right in front of a tall survey stake in the middle of no where! Amazing!

So, I had to try it on another listing last night with the very skeptical cowboy. We found one easy corner then I took off on a hike for 644 feet in an area even hard for birds to fly through. I’d not been to this corner either but I finally got into the cedar trees to where the app said the corner should be. I had no clue where I was but held out my hand to tie a pink flag on a branch for the approximate location. Lo and behold, I just giggled!!! Do you see what I see? There was the survey stake about 5 inches from where I was going to tie on the pink flag.

Would you like to play with this program? Simply download Land Glide (or another called OnX), enter your parcel number, download to your device and have your boots on. Use it free for one week. Or, I’m glad to pop by for a fun hike.

Chris and Sons +Bluegrass Music Saturday Night

It was such a pleasure to meet Chris Clarke and his sons when they came to the mountain and found their perfect getaway cabin. Ben and Ian are such great guys. Chris mentioned that one reason he was looking forward to time at their cabin was “no screens, no internet”. Those boys have had a blast. They cut and split a cord of wood together a few weeks ago. All they wanted to do was work in the woods for 4 days.

Their dad is in a Bluegrass Band called Plow. They are playing Saturday night, Sept. 17th at Heroes (formerly Wynola Pizza) in Santa Ysabel.

Another band plays at 2:00 and Plow will be setting up to start at 6:00 pm. See the details here.

Click for fun photos last time we heard Plow.

They will be outside, maybe on the big stage at behind the restaurant. You might appreciate a jacket.

Hope YOU can make it!

$899,000 for 10 Acres with Views, Home + Apartment?!?

Absolutely! Best price for value per square foot on Palomar Mountain!

How about gazing off your deck to Catalina out in the Pacific Ocean? Or seeing the morning sun light up the Observatory? So many turkeys and deer are very happy on this land. Those guys could make room if you wanted to have a little farm. Very easy to be self-sufficient here. In addition to being on the grid, it is set up to plug a generator in, just in case you are off-grid.

The property was named StarHavens and operated as a much-loved Airbnb the past couple years. We did close that down recently so it is easily available to show and for you to call your very own.

What will it be? Here are new photos and details: StarHavens and Loft to make your very own!

Come on up to the Mountain Top and let’s see if this is “The One”!
