Be Prepared Tips from Marie Waldron

The summer is over and the fall fire season is rapidly approaching. We all had a taste of what can happen last May when a series of wildfires struck throughout San Diego County. Fires, earthquakes, floods and landslides, all occur with regularity in Southern California; it is only a matter of time until the next natural disaster strikes.

Consequently, we should prepare for disasters and emergency situations of all types. Creating a family disaster plan, including where to meet, how to keep in touch, how to secure your home and what to do with pets and livestock must be planned in advance. Once an emergency hits, it’s too late.

More information about disaster preparedness is available at:

California Emergency Management Services: www.calema.ca.gov

While governments at all levels prepare for everyday emergencies, major disasters can overwhelm emergency services. For these reasons, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program has been established to assist first responders and to provide training and emergency assistance in areas impacted by natural or man-made disasters. To learn more about Palomar Mountain CERT and CERT programs throughout the county, please visit:

Palomar Mountain CERT: http://www.palomar-fire.org/cert.php

The recent fires in this region have served as a wake-up call.  Now is the time to plan and prepare. The safety of our loved ones may depend on actions we take today.

Palomar Observatory at Children’s Hospital

Palomar Mountain Obervatory at Children's Hospital  Hopefully, you’ll never see this beautiful rendition of the Palomar Observatory up close.  But, if you must, you’ll be very pleased with the wonderful care given your child or grandchild.  Today I got to be with our oldest ‘Treasure’ who is feeling much better after an asthma attack, pneumonia, and couple days at Children’s Hospital.  I’d noticed that her room had such well done art, covering a wall.  It depicted the planet Saturn with the rings, so we talked about the solar system a bit, between snuggles.  When I slipped out tonight, this caught my eye on the fourth floor. I had to stop and take this to share with you.  About 5 x 5 feet, it really is lovely.

Enjoy your last few days of Summer!

32 degrees cooler on Palomar!

kajsa peffer  It was 74 degrees yesterday when my husband, Don, left the mountain a little before noon.  An hour later he was in Escondido and his gauge showed 106!  Sure makes us appreciate being on the mountain these days!  It’s often 20 degrees cooler, but 32!?!??  Interesting weather these days!

Thanks to Kajsa Peffer, for sharing her beautiful photo of the sky above the Observatory, taken last Saturday.

Chef Bernard: “Life is Simply Delicious…!”

Chef Bernard, Marine Room, San Diego  Happy Birthday to Chef Bernard Guillas!  One of my great joys are the reviews from guests at the vacation rentals on Palomar. They have all been so fun to read. Here is a special one that I thought some of you would enjoy, too.

Chef Bernard, the Executive Chef at the Marine Room and La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club enjoyed 5 days at Cabin Fever.  They were treated to our last rain storm which added a bit of spice to his “perfect recipe” for his birthday celebration and “staycation” from his very busy season in La Jolla.  We agree with you, Chef Bernard, that life is “simply delicious” up here, a mile nearer heaven!

His signature in the Cabin Fever guest book is his logo with his name and chef’s hat – pretty clever! There is more to learn about our most recent guest at his website www.chefbernard.com and you can check out his acclaimed cookbook Flying Pans, Two Chefs One World at www.twochefsoneworld.com.

Chimney Sweep minus Top Hat

pb   Pott Belly Shoppe Chimney Sweep

He said his top hat blew off with all this crazy weather we’ve been having!

These guys are pretty good at singing and dancing ’round the chimneys up here.  We get ours cleaned each year and the Pott Belly Shop in Ramona always is a pleasure to do business with.  They have a beautiful showroom for all things woodstoves, and are a great source for those wonderful propane fireplaces, too.

"Aurora Borealis" Karina Bezkrovnaia-Vertelezka

Rainbow “Aurora Borealis” going down from Palomar Mountain today around 4 pm by Karina Bezkrovnaia-Vertelezka

with her Nikon 18-200mm. What a treat have this beautiful photo to share with all of you taken in the Will Valley area along the East Grade.

Karina and her family were such a pleasure to meet when they were vacationing at Cabin Fever a few days in the Spring.  So glad they were in the perfect location to capture this for us this afternoon.  Karina posted it on her Facebook then emailed to share with you!  Thank you Karina! Beautiful!

Click to read a little of Karina’s family history, their passion for music, and a link to her CD, too.
