Peter, our Palomar Historian

Over a decade ago Peter and Kathy bought a cabin on Palomar.  A few years later, they sold it.  However, Peter is a librarian at UCSD and continues to gift us with his fabulous collection of research pertaining to our favorite mountain.

He and Kathy had their Palomar Mountain History table at the Apple Festival.  They had albums of old photos on display and shared history on that very chilly day-in-the-clouds.

South Graders, Burt Hulbert and Bobby Graziano got to visit a bit with Peter and Kathy.  They were shown photos and told some of the history of the “Highway to the Stars”  (We should work to get that name back, don’t you think?)

Then, Marcia Beishline gave Peter some interesting local history of her family that has had a love affair with Palomar for over 100 years. You can also see Barbara Waite (Marcia’s sister-in-law), to the left of Peter’s table, selling her newest book of her grandmother’s journal – Elise’s Mountain Years.  A fun day…

Peter has also been responsible for having Robert Asher’s book published, and several out of print books re-published and available now through his website and the Palomar General Store.

You’re invited to visit Peter Bruggeman’s Palomar Historical Archives

More mountain history is stored on our Palomar Historical Link – quite a few contributions by several mountain families, including a link to Peter’s treasure trove.

Thank you so much Peter and all who value and contribute to what our Mountain is today!

My froggy voice – what about YOU?

So what do I have in common with Julie Andrews?  We both know all the words to the Sound of Music!  And we both lost our voice with similar questions unanswered.

My son, Nathan and I also have something in common with Larry Page, one of the co-founders of Google!  We have been trolling on line, searching what we can find out about this difficulty in breathing and froggy voice that Mr. Page has now experienced, twice.  He set up a foundation and has invested millions of dollars.  Quite a few names you’d recognize are a part of his board, including ‘Maria’. Lots of great information. Very helpful and shorted our learning curve tremendously.

After being told a few weeks ago I had a ‘paralyzed vocal cord’, I heard about risky surgery options, passed the blood tests, and my CT scan found only ‘tiny’ nodules on my lungs.  It has been interesting to visit my five different doctors so far, in a quest to learn what caused this and how to get my voice back.

The biggest challenge has been breathing.  Since that is something I do quite often, I finally goggled ‘Naturopath’ and found one who also specializes as an Allergist.  My first visit was pretty remarkable.  After not ever thinking I had allergies, apparently some have surfaced.

Dr. Gaila discovered in a few minutes that I show a sensitivity to some foods.  Not surprising.  But, then trees and pollen (that would be the mountain and most anywhere), a virus, horses (Buddy and Dollar!) and some other little critters that I’m often lovin’ on.  However, what is so fascinating is, she has a program where you can be “cleared” of your allergies.

The program is easy. My treatment will take another couple weeks to complete.  Of course we aren’t sure that my voice will be back totally, but this has made such a difference.  Still ‘choosing my words carefully’ but the good news is; now I don’t sound as much like an old toad, but more like a little frog. 🙂 I’m not sick, not contagious and with this treatment, feel so healthy – better than ever!

Perhaps some of you readers have health issues that could benefit with this same treatment?  I really encourage you to see what she could do for you. My voice situation could be tied in with something else, but if you can benefit by connecting with Dr. Gaila, it would make it all worth it.

Sincere thanks for all your prayers. The prayers and kindness shown my way are much appreciated!

Apple Festival Photos and Juggler, too!

   10

The Apple Festival was such old fashioned fun!  Rick Barclay with Friends of Palomar State Park have many wonderful photos and some great videos waiting for you!

Click to scroll through several albums  and be sure to watch the video of the juggler dad showing off for his son! Oh, and the great musicians who play for us every year.  Don’t you just love the sound of that old car!  Then you might want to see the apple pressing in action… oh, just watch them all!

We got there too late for the Square Dancing.  Next year we’ll get there EARLY!

Thanks to all who volunteered to make it such a fun event for all.  And, thanks to Rick, for doing such a great job on the photos!

Ready for Winter?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Traditionally, we use Labor Day Weekend as a reminder to winterize.  It’s been so warm and I realize many of us have enjoyed this ‘summer’ weather.  However, I believe we are all looking forward to cooler temperatures and I finally put away my white sandals and jeans.  (After all, it is November!!!)

The weatherman is promising maybe a peek at a dusting of snow this week.  You won’t need chains yet, hopefully very soon!

So, double check the fill on your propane tank, make sure your firewood is ready, your pipes are winterized and you have a good supply of hot chocolate!

So, fall back, update your smoke detectors, and let’s go on a hike!

Easement Progress on Palomar!

jeff

Way back in August of 2005, the need for establishing deeded access became very apparent when most of the homes and little cabins on Palomar would show up as ‘landlocked’.  Thanks to quite a few folks, we are finally closing our second escrow with plotted, deeded ‘public roads, privately maintained’. That means, we can also get loans for most of Palomar.  Pretty exciting!

Yesterday, I met up with my title rep, Jeff Knapp,  who has stuck with me through this project even moving to a different title company.  His team has provided a wonderful notebook of Palomar with all our little roads.  We have County letters and recorded old maps to back it up. Your property is in that book and I’m glad to get your questions answered.

We still have work to do in some areas, but we are very close.  Lots to be thankful for and I’ll keep you posted!

Halloween on Palomar 100 years ago

tidbits-web

From:  Barbara Anne Waite

Work remained a constant companion on Elsie’s mountain. October was one of the busiest months, requiring a large crew to pick and pack the apples. Elsie, of course,  had to provide the meals for all the apple pickers. Yet in this excerpt from the book readers can see how, in spite of the work, she remained upbeat and creative. Elsie told her grandchildren this Halloween story year after year.

“Up on our mountain, with no chances to go down, the pickers could hardly have spent the money they were earning. I wonder how they kept contented with so little to entertain them. One fall, we did give them a party that provided a lot of fun for Martha and Sadie, and me at least. It was a surprise Halloween dinner—a surprise in more ways than one.

Sometimes, if not always, a big meal was taken at noon to whatever orchard was being used that day, where perhaps we would join them for a picnic. That day, with the house entirely to ourselves, we decorated it lavishly. Branches of golden oak leaves and rosy sprays of Dogwood were a background. I had some construction paper with which we cut out such appropriate items as cats and witches on broomsticks and tacked them to the walls. We wrote out individual menus, partly humorous, largely in French, indicating that the usually informal meal would be served in as many courses as possible. We made place cards with a personal rhyme to fit each man. Then we prepared a special dinner. We chuckled over everything in anticipation of the surprise.

When the men came in to dinner, they stared about at the decorated walls and table and sat down, startled to find the place cards and menus. Probably a number of them had never heard of such things, much less seen them. They were silent, looking embarrassed. And why wasn’t everything served at once? The courses, one after another, bewildered them further. Our greatest fun had been planning the entrée or what appeared to be the entrée. With an air, Martha brought in a large serving platter with a great rounded oval cover I had inherited, designed to keep a roast hot. She set it down at the head of the table, lifted the cover, and out sprang a very live and very angry black cat! The response was not the shout of laughter we had happily anticipated, but more disgust, or pity for our unbalanced minds. At least the steak that followed was very welcome, as was finally the big cake. Anyway we girls had fun.”

Now, almost 100 years later,  I am having such fun sharing “Elsie’s Mountain” with those who never had the privilege to hear her giggle as she told her tales of life on Palomar.

I was privileged to be able to do this at the annual Apple Festival on Palomar Mountain this month. On Oct. 26th the Temecula Historical Society invited me to spend an hour telling Elsie’s stories. I look forward to speaking to the Historical Society in Ramona and other nearby groups. Next Saturday, November 7th, I will be at Bates Brothers Nut Farms selling books and telling tales.

The first 100 copies of  “Elsie’s Mountain” have sold or been given to potential reviewers in the last 2 weeks. I still have a supply to mail to friends interested in the special November price. It sells on Amazon for $15.00. During November I will mail autographed copies to those within the USA for $12. I am looking forward to hearing from those who have read and enjoyed.

Thank you all,

Barbara Anne Waite

Real Estate Update “57,465?”

view

Clicking through my email, a post popped up from someone looking for some of my marketing business.  Apparently he had been checking out other business and Palomar Properties came up. He said, “Wow, you have 57,465 Google Plus views!” That is a lot of folks interested in property on our little mountain!

There is a catch!  The last couple years I have been mentioning that we are at an all-time low for inventory.  That is sure true for Fall 2015!

The past year has been ‘creative’ to say the least.  Lenders have had new requirements for loans, nation-wide, that we’ve been working through. Drum roll!!!  Several areas up here are now lend-able again!   So, some of those cabins and homes tucked away, off a main road, can now be marketed without checking a ‘land locked’ box.  This is huge.

There is a wonderful log home coming up and a couple more cabins. (Yes, that is a peek of a view!)  Do YOU have a property you are thinking of selling?  Like to make a move? Glad to get your questions answered.

On my way for two listing appointments in Valley Center!  One couple with a cabin up here would like to sell and live full time on the mountain.  The other family contacted me at church Sunday, wanting to scale down from the big home and guest house he built a few years ago, and move to Pauma Valley. It will be fun to help them live their dream. Do you have a property to sell off the Mountain?  Let’s connect!

Like to own a piece of paradise on Palomar?  Click through my website and let’s go for a tour!  Be one of the 57,000 plus folks that enjoy having an address up here, a mile nearer heaven!

Opt Outside!

Palomar Mountain Snow  How many of you would rather be on the Mountain, than in the aisles on the biggest shopping day of the year?  That would be me.  Think it has been at least several decades since I have been in a mall over Thanksgiving weekend.

I sure I am not alone in applauding REI for closing their doors that day, giving their employees a paid day off and encouraging all to Opt Outside!

Here is a link for you with REI’s great little video, plus an opportunity to post a photo of where you’ll be instead of shopping on that Friday.  I’m posting this pic taken a few years ago, carefully going down State Park Road after a (wonderful) ice storm.  Yes, I love snow and occasionally we are treated to a winter wonderland over Thanksgiving weekend!  Here’s hoping!

Yes, I’m option for outside in any weather!  How about you?
