Coming Soon! Home on 5 Acres!

5 front yard

What is your favorite season?  You have them all at this lovely setting and absolutely beautiful, quality built and very charming home on the South Grade.

When snow pix arrived this morning from the seller, I called real quick to ask if we could post a ‘Coming Soon’.  Here you go:

The Peacock House

The peacocks moved on now, but the name has stayed for over 50 years.

Ray and Hazel Kersh built their home in 1964. The seller’s Aunt Hazel was known as the Bird Lady of Palomar. She raised exotic parrots, was world renowned for her cockatiels and everyone traveling the grade would marvel at the beautiful peacocks that would be out to greet us. More fun history real soon!

Meanwhile, who would like the beauty of the four seasons (some snow, but no plow needed at 3500 feet elevation), a 1600 sf absolutely lovely, 2 bedroom, slump-stone home with amazing built-ins, gorgeous, updated kitchen, large garage/ workshop, storage rooms, patio room on 5.83 acres with your own well? Extremely level, ideal for animals, gardening, grandkids, your RV, boat and all your toys. Sellers are packing to move out of state but said I could slip you ‘early birds’ in!

You don’t mind a few boxes tucked away in a sparkling clean home, do you?  Let’s go see!  Maybe the next boxes will be YOURS, moving in!  A few more details are waiting for you here:  http://www.palomarproperties.com/homes/index.html

Quality Built Palomar Home For Sale

160037812-20

Cabins look extra-special on snow days!  I do happen to have a file tucked away called “Cabins in the Snow”.  I have pix of almost every home or cabin up here, taken on the days we are a winter-wonderland. This one was taken quite a few years ago.   We only have sunshine and blue sky to tempt you now.  But, a huge plus at this home, is great year-round access, right off the county plowed, Crestline Road.

Here are more details but you don’t need your mittens or boots to come on up and check it out: http://www.palomarproperties.com/homes/index.html

Let’s go!

Wood Pile Inn For Sale

5 IMG_3907

In 1924, sisters, Catherine and Anne Wood had a charming cabin built on Palomar. The builder crafted three different cabins out of mountain cedar, all with the same floor plan, and this is one of them!

A huge stone fireplace, of course, in a good-sized living room. He made the door handles, a window-seat, and drop-down windows so you have a nice breeze in the summer look out to the deck.

Let’s go in the kitchen.  It still has the wood burning stove. When electricity was brought to Palomar, the now-vintage refrigerator was added. The sister’s aprons were found tucked away, both washed and pressed and hanging in the kitchen, to use for the next baking project, now with a modern range.  Those favorite blue dishes are freshly washed and waiting for the next owner.

Tins for Sugar, Beans, Wafers and Popcorn appear to be recycled coffee cans.  They were painted and labeled by hand. That baking tin houses their sifter and biscuit cutters.

The sisters taught at San Diego High School. Last night I talked to one of Catherine’s PE students, Addie Marley.  She and her husband have a cabin close by and she has fond memories of her teacher.  Catherine loved Palomar so much that she researched stories and penned a book published in 1937, ‘Tepee to Telescope’.  Her book is a delightful read, available at the General Store.

You have power and water and could have phone service and internet  – oh my, what would the sisters think of internet!?!  The land includes two APNs 135-062-56 and 063-41 for 1.2 forested acres. It is a fixer now, so bring a tool box for foundation, windows, siding, oh, you might want to add some insulation…  but for now, it could be pretty fun ‘Glamping’!

We have the table set for tea… come on up and join us!  See if Wood Pile Inn is the cabin for YOU!

It’s fun to see how many visitors there are at various times of the day.

Sometimes you can see the ranger on tower walkway.

Discovery fun at Wood Pile Inn

IMG_3843

Yes, I love to list and sell property!  But my all-time favorite is bringing out the best of the properties through staging.  Everything from having a road cut in so we can drive on the vacant land, grooming the property to make it more fire safe and insurable, to setting a table for tea with the original owner’s China dishes.

I love the discovery of sifting through what is left in some of these cabins, homes and ranches, woven with such happy memories.  We work real hard to get the resident mice moved out, then use the best-of-the-finds to make the cabin even more inviting.

This little sewing box was a fun discovery in the latest cabin-in-the-works.  Ribbon from maybe 40 years ago, was made to add on to a completed project.  It has the cabin name:  Wood Pile Inn.

Two sisters, Ann and Catherine Wood loved every minute at the cabin when they weren’t teaching at San Diego High School. Catherine was the author who wrote the delightful book, Teepee to Telescope that is available at our General Store or through Palomar Mountain Historical Resource.

Click for the sister’s photo on a post from 2010.    The owners are now going to let their beloved cabin go for a new family to enjoy.

We have several very happy new owners on Palomar these beautiful summer days!

More new listings will head your way just as soon as possible.

Bonnie Phelps, Realtor, enjoying the discoveries so much!

Log Home and 1906 Earthquake

spring   IMG_2306

How fun to answer the phone with a call from the original owner of this charming log home!  He introduced himself as a realtor, on the coast who found “his” property on the web.  As his “favorite home of all time”, he told me about the large window that is part of the wall in the master bedroom.  That beautiful leaded glass survived the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake!

Having an idea for a hand-carved door, he took photos of what he loved about the property – seeing the Observatory, birds, all the trees and deer.  He passed those photos off to a carver in Mexico to create the door.  Another craftsman made the intricate but very solid mahogany door handles.

There is a lot to love about this very private home on nearly 8 acres.  Sellers just reduced the price to give you even more to celebrate on this Fourth of July Weekend!  Check it out and lets go see: http://www.palomarproperties.com/homes/index.html

Elsie’s Mountain FREE

elsies mountain

Like a free book for your Kindle?  One of Palomar’s authors, Barbara Waite has a free deal for you through July 2nd: https://www.amazon.com/Elsies-Mountain-Memories-California-1897-1987-ebook/dp/B018P0M83I#nav-subnav

Of course, “Elsie’s Mountain” is our favorite mountain too – Palomar! The latest book is a must-read with wonderful stories and lots of photos to enjoy.

“Elsie’s Mountain”, as told by Barb, through weaving her local knowledge in with grandmother’s journal, is a sequel to “Elsie- Arizona Teacher 1913-1916”.  With the love triangle and all the drama of living and working 100 years ago as a school teacher, you cannot put that book down until finished. Of course, if you are the kind of person that likes a ‘real’ book in your hands, both are also available from Amazon or Barb (the ones from Barb come with her autograph!).

Click for Barb’s website: http://barbaraannewaite.com/

Happy Reading and please share with your friends!
