Triple J Ranch – New Neighbors!

triple j

It’s all about Family at the Triple J Ranch!

When brothers Jim, Jeff, and John came up to look for land they said they wanted a place for their families to gather.  They had a dream to create a ranch for a weekend getaway – far away from their very busy lives in Orange County. Jim’s wife,  Tashla enjoys playing board games and relaxing from her normally hectic schedule with work and kids.  John and Anna and Jeff and Jennifer also look forward, as much as possible, to load up their kids, pack in the food, make that last Home Depot stop and head to the hills.   Sister, Jenna and family join them when they can from Colorado. The brothers wanted a place for all the cousins to experience nature and make great memories just being together – a ‘legacy property’ they would all work on and keep in the family always.

The brothers had an amazing vision for the neglected and over-grown land they just had to have.  I’d peeked at progress photos that really intrigued me and finally got to see the ranch for the first time over the weekend.  So impressive and inspiring! Everywhere you look you see their signature of hard work, fine craftsmanship and super creative ideas.

The cabins are amazing and I love their priority!  The first project was to build a cabin for Mom! Jeanie is so blessed with such a cute-as-a-bug cabin. Furnished with  inviting, vintage antiques and lots of love. The children enjoy so much stopping by Mimi and Papa’s cabin for a quick game of cards.

Everyone worked together clearing the land and grooming trees.  They built picnic tables and wooden barrel trash can containers that all have ‘Triple J Ranch” burned into the wood.  So many creative touches. Love the new sign that was one of this past weekend’s projects.

They play real hard too!  Last Thanksgiving found twelve around their table.  This year it was twenty four!  All sorts of games, activities and music – lots of music for kids of all ages every time they can get to Palomar.

Of course, this weekend included making gingerbread houses and decorating the outdoor Christmas tree with lots of laughter and memories to cherish forever.

Everyone has been pretty good this past year so Santa just may be on his way again real soon.

Merry Christmas from all at the Triple J Ranch!

Highway to the Stars!

highway to the stars

70 years ago the first Highway to the Stars signs were installed along the route the mirror traveled to the Observatory.  The signs disappeared over the years but now they are back!  Thanks to the PMPO (Palomar Mountain Planning Organization) for assisting with this project, you see signs posted along the same road the mirror traveled to Palomar those seven decades ago.

You can also have your own sign! It is available at the Palomar Mountain General store in two sizes plus car decals.  Just in time for gifts!  You’ll see a nostalgic display including historical books telling of life on the mountain back in the days.

You are also invited to visit the Valley Center History Museum.  You can see a collection of photos and other items from 1938 and 1947 documenting the historic trip on the Highway to the Stars!

29200 Cole Grade Road

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Fuel Reduction on Birch Hill

Wow, I was out there yesterday and saw the work that has been done so far.  Great job, guys!

Subject: Birch Hill Fuels Work

We have started work on the Birch Hills Community Defense project.

The crew started working last week and you can usually hear their chain saws from 0700-1400 daily except Sunday, weather permitting. The plan is to have them cut brush and pile it.  Our plan is to then burn piles and then follow up with future broadcast burns to create a more defensible space for the residences of Birch Hill.

The Palomar Fire Safe Council and the U.S. Forest Service is doing what we can to help improve the defensible space in the Wildland Urban Interface and help keep wildfires from raging out of control and help fire fighters have a place where they may make a stand.

If you have any questions or issues please feel free to call me directly at 619-209-1414 Tim Gray or my Fuels Specialist Dana Barre at 619-884-7491.

New Neighbors – the Jakubs Family

IMG_2875

Living in the city and missing the mountains, tall trees and the beauty of nature, the Jakubs family had to do something about that!  A cabin on Palomar! Crescent was exploring the woods in western Maryland while Tonja was growing up in Hood River, Oregon. They wanted to give their children the experience being surrounded by nature and the changes of the seasons that Palomar provides.  For nearly 100 years their vintage cabin was without a real foundation, insulation, a sound roof, shivered when the wind blew and all the while, dreaming of a general contractor to help it’s aches and pains. Crescent stepped up to the challenge and is checking off projects, working together as a family to restore their much-loved retreat.  During the week he is the Facilities Director for the Old Globe in Balboa Park.  Tonja has a full schedule caring for Nolan (not pictured), Tori, Harper and Zylen, and enjoys volunteering in their school.  Very musical, they all look forward to making music and more wonderful memories ’round their campfire on their mountain.

Insulation 100 years ago

IMG_5693 1    IMG_5692 2

What a fun surprise to pop by a remodel today.  The owner is breathing new life into his very vintage, single wall cabin.  He found the original insulation – old magazine photos! Someone worked very hard a century ago, collecting those photos and pasting them on the wall to help keep the drafts out. Quite a collection of photos on heavy paper will soon be covered with the very latest insulation including recycled denim.

That makes the second cabin on the mountain that I know of Forever in Blue Jeans!

Just part of another fun day on Palomar!

2017 Home and Guest House

IMG_6804 c

Coming real soon!  Very peaceful, off-mountain view from deck and all rooms of brand new construction, 1281 sf three bedroom, two bath home.  Enjoy that view all the way to the Pacific!

There is a guest house, too!  Built in 1928, with just 353 square feet, it now has a full bath and room for a mini kitchenette. Plus you have a shed for those sleds!  Nearly an acre with great access, this just could be the most usable, level land of it’s size on all of Palomar!

The are still some things to finish up, appliances are being delivered soon and last minute touches.  Meanwhile, you are welcome to a ‘pardon our dust’ tour!

Just think, you could be in by Christmas!

Take a peek and come up for a Tour!
