At this very moment, this charming cabin IS available! Gotta be quick!
‘The Partridge Nest’, also known over the years as ‘The Definition of Cute’, is now available for a new owner. It would be so fun for full-time living with such easy access, but also as been one of the most sought-after vacation rentals on Airbnb. With beginnings in 1928, over the past 10 years, a former owner pulled permits, added on, and restored the cabin to make it so easy to move right in and enjoy. Don’t you just love the furnishings? They are an option too, so you could even spend the night when escrow closes.
‘Fresh Air Resort’, a vintage cabin tucked away in it’s own private forest on the well-kept secret of Palomar Mountain. Cozy up to the original stone fireplace built about 80 decades ago. When the owner had me over, he talked about some projects he planned to do over the years that will be left for you. Then we stopped on the patio and he pointed to the three towering fir trees and said, “I discovered my cathedral here and sit on the patio and talk to God”. It is a very special place. My husband was leaving to go out of state for a few days so put up several new signs for me. That prompted a few calls and neighbors just had to have it. They will take over the projects of a new roof, moving out the residents (oh, you know, those pesky woodpeckers and mice), installing new siding, getting the propane working again, adding heat throughout the cabin, new windows and a few more things to keep them busy. But meanwhile the owner, a fine craftsman, built some beautiful cabinets and the live edge counters with mountain wood, installed new flooring throughout and in a little bunk shabin out back. He is invited to visit anytime he’d like to see the progress of ‘Fresh Air Resort’.
A last minute call came in to see one of my new listings. Ephraim and Amiee came up for a late afternoon tour. Ephraim said he had been trolling Palomar Real Estate since he met me at Remax years ago. He was their IT guy and spent many hours keeping my lappy happy back in those days. He said I was always talking about the mountain and they decided recently that they needed their own piece of paradise up here.
When they arrived, it was lightly snowing and so beautiful out. We went over to see and they just had to have one of our very special cabins and wouldn’t leave until we wrote it up. Then the power went out! My cowboy wasn’t home to hook up the generator. Buyer to the Rescue!!! Being an IT guy, Ephraim had a portable internet hook up so we were off and running!
What cabin sold? Sorry to say, as several of you had your eyes on this one. The Owl has flown away. Yes, the Spotted Owl is in escrow. The owners have an over-asking offer with no contingencies, a quick close, and were given extra time after closing to move out. Click to see the MLS listing with all the new photos I took yesterday morning.
Working on all the new listings I’ve been blessed with lately. I’ll be out and about today so will capture some fresh snow photos. What’s next? New photos for the charming Partridge Nest and then I think we’ll have some ocean view land to tempt you.
About 7 inches of snow on the ground here with more on the way. Such an amazing Winter Wonderland, this beautiful Palomar Mountain!

Dutch Bergman stopped by, warming up a bit in front of our fire. You know who Dutch is, right? He is one half of the Smith Mountain Boys. And … drum roll …. he is playing and singing with the other half, Bruce Druliner, this Thursday night at The H! Dutch was trying to tell us that the band has way more fun than anyone in the room. I beg to differ!!! The audience has waaaay more fun than the band!!!
Come on out Thursday night and judge for yourself!

Thursday night we can all celebrate this week’s storm being over! Now the report is saying we might only get 7 inches instead of 17 – hooray! Oh nooooooo, it just changed to maybe 19 inches by Thursday! Check it out on NOAA. We’ll know for sure how much snow by show-time.
Warm up at the Lazy H listening to both halves of the Smith Mountain Boys!
See you there!

We are teased with maybe 17 inches of snow this week! Well, that is what they say this very chilly President’s Day! Looking out from my desk, I don’t see much but a thick cloud rolling through. According to NOAA, there is a storm on the way complete with the promise of high winds, too!
BTW, if you thought of taking a big trailer load of junk down to the Pala transfer station like that cowboy I live with, it’s closed today… but you can get a great breakfast at El Rey! You’re welcome.
Do you remember when this holiday was called ‘Washington’s Birthday’? My mom’s birthday was the same day. (Not the same year, silly! That would make her daughter VERY old!) George would have been 290 today. Mom? Let’s see. She was born in 1925 so she would be celebrating 97 years old! Happy Birthday Mom!

$300 per cord (4ft x 4ft x 8ft neatly stacked). All dry and seasoned. Will deliver to anyone on Palomar mountain for free, as long as it’s not 4 x 4 access. I’ll unload and for free, as long as the location is within a few feet from the trailer. The oak is white, red and scrub oak. This is real Palomar Mountain wood split with a 40 ton log splitter. I also have cords of Spruce Pine for $250 each. Very rare, smells incredible when burned. I can mix and match if you’d like.
Off-mountain, please ask about delivery rates. Glad to be of service.
Some of you might have heard there are some changes in the works for the Phelps Family.
Don, the cowboy I’m married to, and I bought our mountain home in 1975, sold it a few years later and bought the same house back in 1998. In 2006 we purchased the land above us with a 12 sided ’round house’ and added a stable to a workshop. It became the Hay Barn and our horses over the years had the amazing seven island view. We lived up there part time, shared it with Christian Conference Center guest speakers, pastor retreats, lots of friends and family and even had eight bride and grooms plus occasionally made it available as a vacation rental.
Our sons Nathan and Brandon have been with us on the mountain for the past few years. Nathan purchased what is now known as Cabin Fever, a charming Vacation Rental. Then Brandon and Heidi, along with our four Treasures (the grandkids) bought the Ranch and moved next door! A few years ago they acquired the property beyond them and have it as two Vacation Rentals: Star Havens and Star Loft.
This was a dream I’d never even dared to dream. Nathan moved to our guest apartment ‘Mountain Orchard Inn’ to be with family during the lockdown. We were so blessed as all our family was here for frequent dinners and so much fun. We’ve had such a ‘Wonderful Life’.
Well, the winds have changed and we’re all looking forward to even more exciting adventures.
A few days ago, Nate whipped up mountain raised steak with local fresh eggs for the brother’s breakfast that might be the last our sons will do together on Palomar. The next day Brandon and Heidi moved to Missouri! Nate was pulling out with a big moving van towing our little farm truck. Heidi took the girls and little dogs, pulling a loaded trailer with all sorts of critters. Don’s horse trailer was packed full plus kennels for the two big dogs. Brandon’s car had the musical instruments and the boys took turns riding with their Grandaddy or Unks (that would be Nathan).
What does all this have to do with Real Estate?
Glad you asked. As most of you know, Nathan has been my Broker the past few years. Brandon has had an amazing career, working from home as a computer engineer with his global company. However, with this pending move, he announced that he would like to team up with us working the exploding real estate market in Missouri. We don’t quite know how this will unfold but already have our first two clients!
What about Palomar Real Estate??? Well, it is rolling like never before!!! As of tonight I just spoke with clients on what will be my 15th new listing!!! True story!!! Crestline and Birch Hill homes and cabins, vacant land with ocean views, and a beautiful ranch will be on the market soon. Plus, Star Havens and Star Loft are coming up. Nate is keeping Cabin Fever and plans some remodeling there to live in ‘Shady Oaks’, the second cabin on that property. I’ll be back and forth but do eventually plan to sell our mountain home. It is very hard to think of leaving all our friends here but so hard to resist when those four Treasures (along with their Popi and Mommie) have asked, “GramBonnie, you are going to move with us to Missouri, too, aren’t you?” What was I to say but “Of course my darling”. Eventually we’ll be 15 minutes from those kids with lots of exciting times between now and then.
Thinking of listing your property on Palomar or in the cities? Like to own a piece of this beautiful mountain? Questions about why the family choose Missouri and what is available there for you?
We’ve got the answers, or will get them for you, and glad to be of service.

Wouldn’t Nate Harrison get a kick out of the fact that the story of his life is so intriguing, he even has a webpage with his own name? Lots of great times and laughter came from his little cabin on what is now known as Nate Harrison Grade. (It was named differently when we lived here in the 1970’s but I’ll leave that for you to check out).
