The Smith Mountain Band 2010

The Smith Mountain Band! Live! Saturday Night on Palomar Mountain!

Bill Druliner, Bruce Druliner, Dutch Bergman, and Steve Barry

From: Stephen Barry
Here is a photo taken at our rehearsal last night of the Smith Mountain Band! It’s the real deal, grey hair, wrinkles, shocking reality. Must have been all those years of playing music.

The band is excited about playing again. In addition to the square dance tunes, we’re planning a set of great rock and roll and listening music. We’ll do some Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Del Shannon, Eagles, and one surprise song we’ve never done before. See you all Saturday night!

Like to BAKE? Yum!

When it is time for dessert, what is your favorite recipe?  Cakes, pies, something real gooey and good?! Part of the fun this Saturday night will be a Dessert Auction.

We’re looking for a few of you great cooks to whip up something very special.  Desserts will be very quickly auctioned off (you’ll havta be FAST to get your favorites!) with all the proceeds going to the on-going needs of our Community Center.  Plates and forks will be on hand for those who would like to share their dessert with others at your table or some of you might want to take them home for midnight snacks!

It makes it very fun to have each dessert with a card with the dessert name, your name,  and the hoops you had to jump through to make it.  List special ingredients, maybe even include the recipe that has been in your family for generations.  Make it fun.  Might even provide a ‘gift with purchase’ – you never know – one year a cake came with fresh-picked mountain wild flowers!  This year I heard that someone is making a fabulous desert and including …. oh, I better not give it away!

Some desserts will even be man-made!  How fun is that?!  Or, made by some of our great Mountain kids (kids are free for the event you know!). Oh, this just in – the school teacher, Andrew Kish is making his all-time fav!!!     The photo was taken at a school auction a couple years ago.  Good cooks on Palomar, that’s a fact!

A big thanks to all who will be busy baking and see you there Saturday night at 7 pm at the Fire Station.

Don’t forget your dough  for the auction!$!$$

Who is that on the tractor?

Mike Stevens is a great guy, mountain weekender, husband to Sue, dad to Hallie and Trent and friend to many.  He is also the California spokesperson for the Lung Cancer Alliance.  Never smoked but  is fighting that disease between driving his tractor, splitting firewood, and hiking all over Palomar Mountain.

Mike needs our help.  Sunday is the Breath of Hope Walk.  How about coming out for a 5 K Walk?  Mike is also appreciative of all those who have sponsored but there is room for more!  Will you help sponsor Mike? Click to see Mike’s webpage.

There will be a lung cancer story Thursday on NBC/San Diego during the 6am news. Friday on Fox and KUSI morning news shows.

Here is more info and links to the Walk on Sunday:

Meet the Love of Your Life? Absolutely!

Once upon a time Rick Palmer and Linda Johnson found themselves at a Square Dance on Palomar Mountain.  Months later I visited with them at a party and saw the fireworks between them.  “Wow!”  I said to myself, “I betcha Linda is going to marry this guy!”  Sure enough! Romance blossomed and they were married out in the French Valley on a beautiful day last May 2nd sernaded by Dutch Bergman on his guitar.  This  weekend will be their one year anniversary!  It got me to thinkin’ that there are LOTS of reasons that you might want to be at the Palomar Mountain Community Center this Saturday!  Here are just a few:

1. Meet the Love of your Life – Looking for the love of your life?  Well, even if you are not – you never know!  It worked for Rick and Linda!

2. Bring the Love of your Life to a very fun Date Night for you, your sweetie and your kids.

3. Listen to Music – you don’t HAVE to dance, you know.  The music is foot-tappin’ wonderful! For the past three decades or so, Dutch-the-Wedding-Singer, has been part of the Smith Mountain Band with Bill Druliner, Steve Barry, and Bruce Druliner calling the Square Dancing.

4.  Learn to Square Dance – For those of you who haven’t square danced since the fourth grade on one of those rainy days when they kept us inside for PE… Mountain Man Bruce makes it real simple by walking folks through “bow to your partner” and all the rest.

5. Fill up on some tasty desserts!  Mountain folks are bringing their all-time favorite recipes.  The desserts will be auctioned off to eat at your table or take home for later.  One thing for sure – there will be some GOOD eatin’!

6. Help support the Community Center!  All proceeds for the evening go toward the on-going operating expenses of the Palomar Mountain Community Center that will be appreciate for decades to come.

7. Meet some great folks and have a wonderful, old fashioned time!

Oh, by the way, Kilts are optional!

See you Saturday, 7 pm at the Fire Station, weather permitting $5.00 per person, kids are free!

Part time work available on Palomar

Interested in a few hours of part-time work on the mountain?

Are you good at giving a quaint cabin some TLC?

I have a vacation rental cabin that needs cleaning after weekend guests leave  – to ready it for the next visitors.  In the summer there will be more guests and mid-week rentals on a regular basis.  Depending on the schedules, work hours can often be quite flexible, but occasionally there are small time windows between one guest and the next party.

Duties consist of changing out the bedding; straightening up, vacuuming, wipe down surfaces and light cleaning of entryway outside; Usually just 1-2 hours with occasional deep cleaning at times when there is no stress.  Communications, consistency, good will and ability to follow through are the main requirements.

The gal who has valiantly done this job for the last 2 years is leaving the mountain so we need someone new.

Give me a call to learn more. Thanks, Martin  619-871-9354 and  email me too at Reservations@PalomarMountainCabin.com

Snow or Rain?

Snow Chance for Measurable Precipitation 80%  Burrrr!  It is getting cold up here!  A storm is heading our way but there are very different forecasts out there.

Personally, I prefer National Weather Service because they are predicting SNOW!  Oh you know, one of my all-time favorite songs –  “There is no business like snow business…” (Isn’t that how it goes?):  http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=sgx&smap=1&textField1=33.32278&textField2=-116.87778

However, http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/92060 is showing only rain.  (Not near as much fun!)

We’ll see what ends up on the ground and one thing for sure – it will be a beautiful Spring!

Enjoy!
