Another great evening on the Mountain!

Thanks to all who worked together to make this another fun evening to remember on the Mountain!  Here is a photo album for you and keep reading for Tracey’s message below:

Cowboys and Bakers bring it home on Palomar!

From Square Dancing to Jimmy Buffet to slow and romantic couple dances, the Smith Mountain Band rocked the house last Sat night at the Fire Station. Dutch Bergman, Bruce & Bill Druliner, and Steve Barry came together in support of the Palomar Mountain Community Center with a live performance that surpassed even the highest of expectations. The dance floor was packed from the moment they started playing – what a fantastic crowd turnout we had!!

Halfway through the evening, while everyone took a break to catch their breath, we auctioned off some mountain home baked desserts. As expected, Palomar residents were generous to a fault, bidding up to $100 at times. Bonnie Phelps with microphone in hand, ensured the auction was fun as well as profitable.

$1,029.00 was raised to help the Community Center cover ongoing running expenses. The Community Center Board of Directors (Bruce Graves, Tracey Chesney, Tricia Lucia, John Lesac, Bernadette Madison) would like to thank…

  • The Smith Mountain Band for an evening that everyone will remember for years to come!!
  • All our wonderful and talented bakers who donated desserts!!
  • Cecelia Borland, for organizing and co-ordinating the evening!!
  • Bernadette Madison for her stunning table-scapes!!
  • Bonnie Phelps for making the auction one that everyone enjoyed!!
  • And every other person who stepped up and volunteered their time to make it a night to remember!

Lookouts need YOU – Volunteer Opportunities with a View!

 From: Brad Eells [mailto:highpointlookout@yahoo.com]

New volunteer training:  OK Gang…here is your chance to become the Smoke Detector you always wanted to be…the few, the proud…the FFLA Fire Lookout Volunteer! A few things to consider before jumping in:

1. You must have a vehicle you don’t mind getting dirty because you will be driving a 3 ½ mile dirt road from USFS Palomar Station to High Point Lookout. Honda and Ford coupes have made it up to High Point but high clearance vehicles are best.

2. When you arrive you will find a 67 foot tower that you must be willing to ascend…and descend.

3. The lookout has no running water, air conditioning, heating or cooking stove…we do have a DC powered coffee maker. You will be camping out for the day or overnight as the ultimate perk of the lookout volunteer program.

4. You do get to operate a Forest Service radio, an Osborne Fire-Finder, a weather kit and a handy pair of vintage binoculars…what could possibly be more fun!

5. You will need to join FFLA, purchase uniform components and a program manual. These expenses along with mileage are potentially tax-deductible.

6. You must attend all training sessions (2 classroom days and 1 in-tower day) and serve 1 shift (day) per month to remain qualified for the program.

New Volunteer training dates: Saturday, May 8th – 9 AM-4 PM Orientation – Interpretation – History Saturday, May 15th – 9 AM-4 PM

Tower Operations Training location: All training sessions will be held at: Cleveland National Forest Palomar Ranger District Training Room 1634 Black Canyon Road Ramona CA 92065 The facility is located just northeast of Ramona off Hwy 78/Julian Road…Google it!

Please RSVP if you will be attending this training. Bring a lunch and your favorite writing utensils. You are welcome to forward this information to anyone who may be interested in joining up. Anyone who partially completed training last year may attend these sessions as well.

Speaking of help: Thank you for your patience in my getting this communication to you. We are all doing more with less it seems these days. My work commitments have become extreme at times and we do need some help to move our growing organization forward. I would like to have you consider helping as a Tower Leader or Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Training Coordinator, Newsletter, Tower or Classroom Trainer, etc. Please feel free to jump in and say, “I’ll do that!”

Here’s to an even more successful 2010!

High Point and Boucher Lookout Updates

 From: Brad Eells

Hello Fire Lookout Fans and Friends,

 Lookout updates:

High Point – survived the winter…and the earthquake quite well with only one small leak in the sink vent. The road is another matter but we hope to have it graded soon. A very large boulder and oak tree have already been removed. Our plan is to open up mid to late May for Season II. The lookout is still not accessible to public visitors. We are working with the Forest to resolve the last few safety issues that will hopefully see the lookout accessible to visitors early this Summer.

High Point made the cover of FFLA’s Lookout Network for the Spring 2010 edition. Take a look here:

 www.ffla.org/nlspring2010-1.pdf

Boucher Hill – has seen lots of activity this winter including some significant damage to the exterior siding. We are working with Cal Fire and State Parks to facilitate the rehabilitation, restoration and re-opening of Boucher Hill Lookout for fire detection and visitor interpretation. 3 new interpretive panels will be installed on the observation deck this Summer telling the story of Fire Detection.

Estelle Mountain/Hemet-Ryan – Cal Fire has offered us the lookout building and tower when they deactivate it some time in the next few years. We look forward to an opportunity to relocate the structure to a former lookout site.

Lyons Peak – Road access remains an issue…all I can say here is…stay tuned…

Los Pinos – Continues to be staffed by veteran Forest Service lookouts…the only ones in all of Southern California.

Hot Springs Mountain – A future project may still await…the Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association will hopefully be constructing an identical structure to replace the lost Vetter Mountain Lookout. We can share planning and knowledge if both projects move forward.

 Upcoming Events:

June 4-6: Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival at Lake Skinner…come see the Smokey Bear Balloon…you can even become a crew member. You can talk lookouts with about 50,000 guests too!

June 15 – July 5: Del Mar Fair – Come hang out in the Forest booth and recruit volunteers, talk lookouts and have great fun! Daily shifts are available – Let me know if you can help.   Here’s to an even more successful 2010!  Click for Brad’s contact info:

Welder for sale with lessons optional

Ok, Dutch has a welder for sale and I have the inside scoop!  He used this welder on jobs for NASA (not a typo!).  (Can you believe it – stuff he and Jim Billups make on Palomar Mountain!)  Now Dutch needs a bigger welder for a bigger job coming his way so is looking for someone to take this off his hands. I’m just kinda curious about the lessons though.  Would this be music lessons?  Guitar?  Voice?  Maybe square dance lessons?  How to ride a horse?  Oh! Welding lessons… Well, you better talk to Dutch!

From: Dutch Bergman palomarmtn@aol.com

Welder for sale – Lincoln Squarewave Pro 175 Tig\ Stick welder. AC, DC, straight and reverse polarity. It is in good condition with light use. $1000.00
The welder comes with lessons if needed.

Thank you… Dutch   760 742-3330 or 742-3612
