Ewaste and Shred drop off on Saturday

Have something with a plug you would like to send to finer pastures?  How about some shredding? . If it has a cord it can be disposed of for free, including large appliances.  The Valley Center ewaste & shred event is this Saturday.  They will also gladly accept donations 🙂

Shredding will be $5 for a bankers sized box. Tell everyone you know. We  need lots of workers thruout the day. Hours are 9-2 for drop off but workers are needed before and after too.

Saturday, August 21 at VC Lower Elementary from 9 – 2.   When driving through Valley Center, turn north on Cole Grade Road, the school is pretty quick on the left.

Hantavirus found in a mouse on Palomar

Several of you have forwarded the article about the Hantavirus from different papers to turn around.  The editor of the Valley Center Road Runner lives on Palomar, so I thought I’d send from his paper: http://www.valleycenter.com/extra2.htm  Thanks David Ross!

After some of the adventures I’ve had cleaning out new listings, I’ve said “If we had the hauntavirus on Palomar, I would have been gone long ago”.  However when I saw this article, I quickly called to check on Joelene.  She is one of our residents up here who did some heavy-duty de-mousing recently for a client and ended up with a flu bug.  Thankfully she is fine and knows how to be careful.

BTW, if you’d like someone to really deep-clean your cabin, Joelene is wonderful:   760 215-9283

Thunderstorm Lessons Learned at High Point

Would YOU like to be out at High Point during a Thunderstorm?  What an adventure!  Two great messages tell of the day.   The first is from Don Stouder, the volunteer manning the tower during Monday’s thunderstorms.  I had a questions about his message when he said he was ‘in the porta-potty when the rain started … but glad he had taken the HT’.  Thinking it was a typo for TP, (LOL  🙂  I confirmed with Brad who cleared it up:

From Brad: << HT is an acronym for ‘Handy Talkie’ or hand held radio. We have a base radio as primary in the lookout and 2 hand helds as back up along with a cell phone. I am so amazed at what our volunteers are doing when faced with a high stress situation that includes lightning and a bunch of professional firefighters and pilots that want to talk to us. We seem to be getting the job done…now we just need some more lookouts to open! >>

Enjoy reading the Thunderstom Lessons Learned at High Point!

Welcome to the Board, George!

Wow!  Brad Ells sure doesn’t let any dust settle under his feet.  He has accomplished soooooo much since he and his wife visited the Observatory one day.  Brad looked out from the gift shop and saw the High Point tower off in the distance.  He was looking for a new volunteer project and boy did he find it. Much has happened since that day not long ago,  and now he has accepted a liaison position with Cal Fire to coordinate the preservation efforts for their lookouts state-wide.  Hooray for Brad.  Keep reading for his Fire Lookout news.

Beware of Internet Scams from Ann

Many of us got an email today looking like it was from someone most of us know on the mountain with the message below.  It was an example of an email e-dress being captured, used with dishonest intentions, and is being dealt with.   After several messages from some of you questioning the situation, I thought it would be good to turn around Ann’s below.   I did X out the name and e-dress to avoid causing any more grief for the pirated sender.   It is not uncommon to get a message like this from someone you may know – just don’t send money!  Now, go out and make it a great day!   Bonnie Phelps

Subject: Fraudulent email making the rounds?

You might want to send it around to alert people to what a fraudulent email looks like.  i.e, asking for money to be wired and wording that makes it plain that English is not your native language!

Meteor shower starting tonight

From: Mike Pique

Subject:and 2010 is great year for it

The Perseid meteors will be back and 2010 is a great year for the meteor shower because the moon will not be in the sky to drown out the meteors.  You don’t need even binoculars, just an open view of the sky and a comfortable lounge chair or blanket.  The best view this year is predicted to be late Thursday night and early Friday morning (August 12-13), but watching the next night or two might be worth doing.  Like most meteor showers, the best views are after 11 PM or midnight, but most important is a clear view of the sky and no bright lights nearby.

Traditionally the fine summer weather for the Perseids suggests enjoying them with a friend and a bowl of cherries.
