Real Estate Update

chicks

Two escrows closed this week. ‘ Just Around the Bend’ has some very excited new owners.  That escrow might have taken the prize for the longest so far in my 16 years.  We had a very helpful seller, very patient buyers, an engineering firm and county offices that finally got us a driveway approval.  It will be fun to watch how that beautiful view property develops.

I’m going to miss these chickens!  ‘Honey, Stop the Car’ has new owners heading our way to live on the mountain full time.  During escrow the seller needed to be out of state a couple times so I popped by to check on the chicks!  How fun to save table scraps, water melon rinds and all sorts of goodies for the gals, swapping for their eggs!   I think we need more chickens up here!

We also need MORE LISTINGS!  Just put the 82 acres on Nate Harrison into pending a few minutes ago and have an offer heading our way on another.  But, we are back down to an all-time low, again! Just let me know what questions I can answer for those of you considering selling.

There are a couple listings for you buyers to scoop up – some with recent price adjustments.  Then, let’s get a few more options for these summer buyers.

No ‘June Gloom’ up here!  Life is grand, above the clouds, come on up!

Yes, we felt the Earthquake

bert's earthquake view

It was 1:03 am when I set up in bed when I heard the whole house tremble at the top of Palomar Mountain.  Think most of us on the mountain woke up.  Thankful it didn’t do any damage.  Enjoyed a pic posted on Bert Hulbert’s Facebook of the beautiful view we got up to a few hours later.   Life above the clouds is pretty special these days!

“An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 shook Southern California early this morning. The quake was centered about 14 miles northwest of Borrego Springs”

Update in Fire Department Staffing!

From: Suzann M. Leininger [mailto:suzbill95@gmail.com]

The Palomar Mountain Fire Board of Directors has been working closely, over the past few months, with the County FD, CALFIRE, Board of Supervisors, State Senate and State Assembly on coming up with solutions to get 24/7 coverage at our station.  Since we are a ‘sky island’ and have over 250,000+ visitors to the mountain every year and with an aging population, we, the board, are also very concerned.  The county has recognized the struggle with staffing.

We are happy to report, that by July 1st, 2016, we will have 24/7 staffing, guaranteed for the next year.  The coverage will be on a County fire engine with career CALFIRE staff, supplemented by County Reserves.   The crews that cover the mountain will be more consistent and able to get to know the area and community members.   During this year, the county will be working on building their Reserve Firefighter pool to be able to cover stations more dependably than they currently are.  The board will be getting updates to their progress.

An Administrative Captain will start at the Station on Monday, 7/13 and the CALFIRE crew will start on Monday, 7/20 with any available Reserves.

CALFIRE Chief Tony Mecham will be comimg up to our community to explain more about this arrangement and answer any questions you may have.  We will announce a date in the near future.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank District 5 County Supervisor Bill Horn.  Your support in making the safety of the Palomar Mountain community a priority is appreciated.

It is the 68th Anniversary of the opening of the Palomar Mountain Observatory!

Thanks so much to Scott Kardel for posting this historical photo on Facebook.

Steven Kunsman also shared, “18 years ago today at the 50th Anniversary, it SNOWED on Palomar Observatory on June 3, 1998. It was freezing in the dome that day! I remember that day well!!!”

Visit with Ian and Garnett

ian

The MacInnis family purchased their cabin in 1961 and enjoyed 49 wonderful years on Palomar.  The had the ‘Rock House’ way out on Birch Hill.  It was very fun to have Ian and Garnett pop by on a visit yesterday from their home in Arizona.

They have fond memories of the “shenanigans and all the fun at the Pancake Breakfasts and Labor Day BBQ”.  A big “Howdy” to all their friends on the Mountain!
