Two Days of SDG&E Power Outages?

Yes, these power outages are inconvenient, but I sure am thankful the crews are hard at work to make Palomar Poles safer.

A couple months ago, I got to watch the crew replace a pole right across from our property. Fun to see them at work and I had a front row seat at my desk. Two cranes were used and so much involved to orchestrate the pole replacement. I couldn’t resist and went out to talk to the man directing traffic. I was curious why they picked this pole across from us to do first on our road.

He explained that the pole I see in my view every day won the prize for having the most woodpecker holes of all the poles on State Park Road. It is also very weathered being totally exposed, right on the rim. I’d remembered a small piece was left at the side of the road, free for the taking. I went over today for the photo. It is still there to see for yourself and if anyone wants it, first one to show up, it’s yours!

So, it looks like both Friday and Saturday we may have power off from 8 am until almost dark – or so. You are invited to click on both buttons on the map up there in “Cleveland National Forest”. They don’t mention Palomar being impacted, but, hello, it does include us. This outage notice has been a little confusing. First we were told the power would be off Friday unless too windy. Then it would be off on Saturday. Well, now the SDG&E Outage link shows both days. Time will tell…

It will be an interesting two days for those of you dealing with no power. Hoping you’ll be able to take the days off and run errands in the city, read a good book, or come on over! We have free Coffee and Wifi waiting for you. Another idea some folks needing wifi have done is ‘moved’ into the Valley Center Library during these outages. They also have great wifi and a fun museum next door to check out on a break.

Would you like things to be different for you during our next outage? Take advantage of the Generator Assistance Program offered by SDG&E. To qualify you need to live in a high fire area with planned outages. Well, that would be all of us. We had good reports with folks pleased with being prepared with their bargain generators.

Let’s all make the best of it! Humm, maybe I should pop some cookies in the oven first thing in the morning…

San Diego PD on Palomar

Yesterday I was out power-walking and watched about 30 San Diego Police Officers drive by before I got my camera turned on. They had been up to Boucher Lookout for a training exercise. They sure picked a beautiful day for a ride to the top of the Mountain! They looked so sharp and headed down the mountain with a big smile and thumbs up from me.

Building Plans?

It was a fun find to come across these building plans when cleaning out a shed. I just cheered! The new owners of the cabin will have the plans from 47 years ago! They were tucked away on a shelf with old paint cans, rusty tools and a bunch of stuff for the dumpster. It was sad to see the condition of the plans. Building plans can be so helpful when locating a septic system, remodeling or adding to electrical or plumbing. They really come in handy.

So, I did what I have before in this situation:

I carefully unrolled the plans and one page at a time, ironed them on the back at low heat. Then I taped the torn areas from the back. Plans are almost as good as new. It’s always best to store them rolled in a tube with a lid so the critters don’t help themselves to nesting material.

That’s the latest from my desk on this beautiful fall day on the Mountain!

Propane Company for Palomar

Extra-busy with Real Estate the past few months. ‘Brown Bear Cabin’ needed lots of attention to get it ready for the market. Over the years, the dirt bank the old propane tank was sitting on settled a bit and that old propane tank rolled down the hill. Thankfully, no one was hurt. But, we needed a new tank. We first had some of the locals in to prep. John Lucia installed a new pipe to the house, Contractor, Tom Fortney, got his tractor over there with some new material and compacted the area so it was ready for a new tank.

I called my list of propane companies and quite a few more. The ONLY company that delivers new tanks to Palomar is All State.

Their customer service is so helpful and they are such a pleasure to deal with.

Mountain Lion Neighbors

‘Party of Three’ waiting for dinner!

We’re always thankful when we see deer grazing down in our orchard. Living here since 1998, we used to see so many more. Thinking these hungry fellows might have something to do with the diminishing deer population. Keep an extra eye on your kids and pets these days. When a lion shows up close to home, be sure to report them: How to report a Mountain Lion.

Thanks to a local for sharing his webcam photo!

Insurance Woes Virtual Townhall

From: Asm. Marie Waldron <Assemblymember.Waldron@outreach.assembly.ca.gov>
Subject: Town Hall: Home Insurance & Wildfires

Dear Neighbor,

Communities across California are continuing to face devastation caused by wildfires. 2020 was the worst year for wildfires in our state’s history, and this year is on track to be even worse!

Many communities in our district are considered Very-High Fire Hazard Zones, including areas in Valley Center, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Pala, Pauma Valley, Palomar Mountain, Escondido, and Rainbow.

I am very excited to share that this session we secured $2,660,000 in funding for our local fire protection districts, and $200 million in ongoing funding statewide to help prevent wildfires in the future.

Unfortunately, many homeowners in the 75th Assembly District are still at risk of losing their home insurance coverage due to the high risk of wildfires in our community.

This is why I am hosting a Virtual Townhall with the California Department of Insurance and Rincon Fire Department Chief Ed Hadfield to discuss this important issue and possible solutions!

To register for this event and submit your question, please click here. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Marie Waldron

Mountain Rose priced even more attractive!

Fall has arrived and it feels like winter so we had to get the fires going to take off the chill. Fall also brings beautiful sunsets – these were taken from the deck. Just think, you could be in by Thanksgiving! Glad to help make that happen.

Absolutely charming, wonderfully romantic, custom/vintage home. Three fireplaces, two enchanting suites with spa tubs, plus a third sleeping room option. Oh, and then there is a parlor, reading room, so much more. About 800 feet was built in 1948. Now you have nearly 1800 sf of pure delight on three quarters of an acre with magnificent sunset views to the west. Ah, the good life is to be enjoyed at ‘Mountain Rose’ on the top of Palomar Mountain! It was used as a fulltime residence for the last three owners. However, the artist who designed the restoration of the original cabin in 2005 also more than doubled the square footage and planned it as two separate units, living in the new and renting out the vintage side. So many options for you! Pull yourself away from amazing view to take in the treasures found inside. The designer was a leaded glass and tile artist and orchestrated all the fine craftsmanship by a local contractor. The past few weeks the exterior has been professionally painted and some touch ups of the interior ready for you to move right in. All windows are double pane throughout the home with easy-care flooring and tile. Exterior is mostly hardy plank, cement siding. Living area enjoys a propane fireplace and kitchenette with lots of room to add more. The brand new stove, refrigerator and microwave arrived in July 2021 and are located off a pantry and/or firewood storage area. You walk out to a very private deck for the peaceful forest view. Master bedroom is upstairs with a propane fireplace, walk-out balcony, vintage cabinet with a copper sink, soaking tub and such a creatively designed closet. The second bedroom is on the walk-in level off the enchanting sun room. It has the amazing stone and tile bathroom, heart-shaped tub, two sinks and washer/dryer. A closet in the new side also includes a second set of hookups for a washer/dryer. Be sure to ask about the three secret hiding places. Oh, so many options with good internet, too. You’ll love it here on Palomar. Come away and join us!

Now offered at $525,000 Click for MLS info and lots of photos.

Let’s see, we usually have snow for Thanksgiving. That is always fun. Hope you can join us!
