BBQ Mtg Notes – It’s going to be FUN! Wanna help?

From: Susie Kellogg

Subject: Notes from April 10 BBQ Meeting – NEXT MEETING SUNDAY MAY 22 AT 12:00 NOON – PMVFD VOLUNTEERS ROCKIN’ THE MOUNTAIN!

BBQ Planning meeting was held on Sunday, April 10.  Kym, Susie, Mary, Greg, John Mandel, John Lesac and Cecelia attended.

Click for a list of committees and volunteers who have signed up.  We need lots more volunteers!  This will be posted at the post office.

Kym has sent off the on-line request for JetBlue airline tickets for our grand prize offering.  She is sending out doz ens of donation request letters to other companies this week, and asked everyone to think of additional businesses that we could ask for donations.

We are working on  pinning down the number of vendor booths to expect so that Greg Van Idsinga site can map out the site.  Cecelia Borland offered to contact vendors to get commitments.

Mary Burdick offered to use her contact base to help promote the event.  She also offered to contact the motorcycle photographer to see if he might want to set up a vendor booth and take photos of kids/families with the fire engines. (As of this morning, he has already agreed!)

John Lesac volunteered to help with sound set-up and he joined the Logisitics Committee to assist Greg.

We all agree that we want live music at the event, but do not have any commitments from musicians.  Blue grass and/or country music would be perfect.  We are planning to bring the old stage and dance floor back to life this year with fresh paint, seating and lights.

Kimba Platt was able to get a balloon arch donated for  the entrance to the event.

Kym received confirmation from the SD Firefighters Association’s to have their 1956 fire truck available for rides.  It seats several people.

Susie will start working on BBQ Volunteer Tshirts to be sold at the event, incorporating this year’s theme “PMVFD Volunteers Rockin’ the Mountain” and this year’s theme colors:  red, white and blue.

Next BBQ Planning Meeting will be Sunday, May 22 at 12:00 Noon at the Community Center.  In the meantime, please communicate with Kym and myself and each other via email or phone.

See you then!

Boucher Lookout Historical FINDS!

From: Brad Eells  Subject: Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry General Orders – April 1952

Found after wall paneling was removed, tacked in the framing at the Boucher Hill Lookout bathroom was a sheet of paper with a handwritten note:

Boucher L.O. Relief Room

Re-Modeled

March 2, 1964

With Hammer, Dull Saw and Jap. Nails

N.P. Tibbs FFF

W.S. Mardock FFTD

Warners Station

Snowed Here Today

Not sure what the “Jap.” reference might be but the Firefighters may have been WWII veterans.

The other side of the paper also contained a treasure. A copy with “Boucher” penciled on it of the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry General Orders dated April 1952.

This document is an outstanding early period find along with a 1952 dated log book found in the rafters by the contractor. The original document will be presented to and preserved by State Parks. I was able to scan the document and reproduce it. “General Orders” are attached for your information.

Enjoy!

Boucher Hill Lookout Restoration Begins!

Many thanks to Brad Eells for heading up the restoration High Point Lookout by the Observatory, and now Boucher Hill Lookout.  Two treasures on Palomar Mountain!  Boucher has much easier access for the Public to also enjoy being in the State Park and we all look forward to many visits enjoying this historic site and taking in that view.  A sincere THANK YOU Brad from all of us!  Bonnie Phelps

Subject: Boucher Hill Lookout Construction Begins!

I am very pleased to announce the building stabilization project has begun at Boucher Hill Lookout. The project will replace the roof sections, windows and catwalk. The 1970’s aluminum siding damaged in last winter’s storms will be removed and new original style wood siding will replace it. All lead paint, asbestos and biohazards will be removed and the floors will be repaired.

The lookout will be transferred to Palomar Mountain State Park at the completion of the project. The lookout will be restored and operated through the cooperation of the Park and the Forest Fire Lookout Association for fire detection, interpretation and education.

The two images show the scaffolding on the building.

To say that we are excited to move forward is a massive understatement…we truly hope to have the lookout open this Summer!

Cheers,
