High Point Third Year of Operation!
Just a quick note to all on and around the mountain that High Point Lookout will begin its third year of service on Saturday, May 14th with an all volunteer staff. We anticipate a busy season and hope to contribute the quick control of wildland fires through early detection and reporting.
Work continues at a rapid pace on Boucher Hill Lookout. The new roof is nearly complete. The catwalk is being replaced this week. New original style wood shiplap siding has arrived on site. I am amazed at the amount of work being done.
Palomar Mountain State Park and FFLA will soon have a second fire detection facility open!

Dutch Oven Campfire Cooking
Folks have been cooking with dutch ovens on Palomar for decades.
Click for a dutch oven temperature chart. Really almost anything you do in an oven can be done in a dutch oven.
Per the chart, if you have a 12″ oven and something needs to bake at 350 degrees, you use 25 hot briquets (17 on the lid and 8 underneath). You may want to check things part way through and move briquets from top to bottom or vice versa if one part is getting more done than another and rotating the lid a quarter turn occasionally is a good idea.
Here are a couple of recipes. Read More…

Treasure Trove
From: Robert Gonsett
Subject: Josephus M. Asher
According to page 83 of Asher’s “My Palomar,” Robert Asher’s father, Josephus M. Asher, was the San Diego County Assessor at one time. Judy and I know the current Assessor, Ernie Dronenberg, so we asked him (via his wife Marilyn) for more info. She replied, “Your book is correct! Josephus M. Asher was SD County Assessor from 1887 to 1890.”
This confirmation explains a lot about Robert’s expertise on land issues. Thank you for recognizing the value of the Asher manuscripts. What a treasure trove.
Best regards, Bob

Friends of my Mom, Charlotte Hermann
So many of you have met my sweet mom, Charlotte Rose Hermann. Over the years as I’ve had her up as much as possible. These photos taken on Palomar in 1959 are a treasure – our first family trip to the snow! Yes, that is me next to Frosty, my little brother Tom (when did he grow to be so tall?) and my dad and mom, Don and Charlotte Anderson. No one could have more wonderful parents. My father passed away in ’88. Mom married a family friend in 1989, a retired pediatrician, Dr. Harold Hermann. My Mom joined Dad in Heaven peacefully on Wednesday morning. The Easter flowers Harold sent to her assisted care home the afternoon included a card “Wishing you a special Easter — filled with Christ’s abundant love!” It will be an amazingly beautiful Easter for her!
Our Celebration of Mom’s Life is planned for this coming Thursday afternoon, April 28, 2011 at 2:00 in the Chapel at Emmanuel Faith Community Church. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to EFCC in the name of Charlotte Hermann.
For those who would like, you’re welcome to visit a little webpage of the last few months with Mom.
Thank you for your kind words and prayers.
Bonnie, for our Family
