Building the Palomar Telescope Lecture

Stuart and Bonnie have property on Palomar and are related to the engineer in charge of this historic trip.  Sounds like a fun event!

From: Stuart Resor

Hi Guys!
It looks like I’ll be giving a short lecture on “Building the Palomar Telescope” at Borrego Springs ABDNHA , Dec 8th in the evening. After the lecture, you are invited to look at the night sky through a telescope.  Save the date and we’ll have the details for you later.

My uncle-in-law, Harper Mack, was the San Diego County engineer in charge of improving the South Grade to facilitate the moving the 200″ mirror up the mountain.  The photo: Moving the mirror up…near the top. A 32 hour process from Pasadena. Think we could find the exact spot that photo was taken?

Palomar Pumpkin Bread

“Pumpkin Bread”

I’ve had the good fortune to inherit a collection of very old cookbooks,

that were put together by folks that lived on

or visited the mountain over 100 yrs ago.

Within its well-worn pages, stained with drops of batter,

filled with little pencil notes on the edges,

was a fall Pumpkin Bread recipe,

“Pumpkin Bread” , edge notes said,” perfect hostess gift, stores well.

If you’re wondering what to do with a pumpkin, or any squash.

peal, steam it until soft, put it  in the blender,

puree it, like baby food. It’s ready to use.

To see the recipe go to:  http://www.baileyspalomarresort.com

and click on ‘Recipes’

I share monthly recipes from my many books.

Hope you’ve tried, the Nate Harrison biscuits?

Bon A petite,

Terri Bailey

Apple Smiles and Bugs on a Log

Like a yummy fall treat?  I have enjoyed having this little ‘craft’ available for children in my life the past couple weeks.  It’s great for kids of all ages!  Mountain apples, peanut butter, marshmallows and raisins.  Yes, it is a little messy.  Just lick your fingers.

Happy Fall Y’all!

Love and Prayers to Earl and Louise

Earl and Louise Walls have been such generous, wonderful neighbors on Palomar Mountain.  As many of you know, Louise recently had knee surgery.  A week ago today on October 18th, Earl was on his way to the hospital to pick her up.   Dear Earl was critically injured in a ‘hit and run’ accident.

Sadly, the doctors report that he has broken vertebrae and is now a quadriplegic.  Earl also isn’t able to speak.  He can nod his head yes and no.  There are no visitors at this time.  On a phone call today, Louise, and Linda Fortney, Earl’s daughter,  asked me to tell you that they “appreciate so much the love and prayers pouring down from the mountain”.

Earl is an American Patriot.  Many of us are on his email pass-around list –  he loves this country!   He defended our freedom in World War II.  So, it was very important to Earl  to be able to vote in this election.  Louise wanted me to let you all know that Earl has voted!  They went through his ballot, Earl nodded yes or no, they marked his ballot accordingly, and his vote will be counted.

Earl and Weezie love to travel, the pictures are from a trip that Earl planned in 2006 and we got to tag along.  Click for an album showing some of the fun times we had exploring Arizona and New Mexico.  As an engineer, Earl had us hoppin’ to pack every adventure in our tight schedule and make it back two and a half weeks later, just in time for a PMPO Board Meeting.

I did a search on Palomar Mountain News for these two fine folks.  Here is just a peek of the Walls’ contribution to Palomar and us all:

Lots of pix of recognizing Earl for untold hours he gave orchestrating the remodeling, doing much of the work himself, of what is now our Community Center:

Louise joined CCPM (that was so she could see Earl more often – just serve on his board!) :

Earl and Louise shared their view of the Thunderstorm:

TyPos in the Mountain News!

Thanks to all for your patience.  Yes, I usually do run spell check, but then I made another change between phone calls.

Hummmmm, maybe I should say that I intentionally slip in a few typos occasionally for the attention?  Just to make sure people are reading this news of our favorite Mountain?!  Well, I will try to do better, but not promising things will improve.  Meanwhile, enjoy, and I’ll keep the news heading your way!

Beat cream cheese, brown sugar, Maple syrup and canned pumpkin until well blended.
