4th since Thanksgiving!

Anxiously awaiting a new computer – again!  This will be my 4th since Thanksgiving.  Very special!  So that is why it is a little quiet these days on the Mountain News.  Thanks to all for your patience and if you have sent me something to turn around, please re-send or give me a call.  Just took snow pix of listings and some on the way!  They’ll be heading your way soon!

Meanwhile, my little Pathfinder is great in this snow and I’m glad to whisk you around for a tour!

Pig on the Loose!

Dpigid you see this pig skate boarding on Palomar this morning?   I was totally minding my own business, oh, I know, that doesn’t happen too often, when I recognized a couple of vehicles parked at the Summit.

Electrician Mark Jones, and Connie Betterton, were waiting for someone from SDG&E so they could get rolling on a project.  While we were visiting, this pig appeared out of the back of Mark’s truck!  Mark said a friend made it, and it has been taking up space in his garage for years.  He thought since he has this job, back in the woods on Palomar, it would be fun to use this pig for target practice!  Can you imagine?  Of course I offered to rescue this pig!  And, it just so happened that we were right under the “Unique Gifts” sign at the General Store!!!  Thanks Mark!

But now the question comes up:  What should we do with this skateboarding pig?  I am going to need some help with that!

unique giftMeanwhile,  when you need an electrician, Mark loves coming up 760 908-6745.  Many thanks to Connie, our photographer, she is now back to work with the ‘Tim and Connie Cedar Show’ on Crestline.  George Ravenscroft was picking up his mail and just had to stop.  He thinks this pig has huge potential.

What are YOUR ideas for this pig?

Elsie’s 125 Birthday! Book on sale!

Fairy woodsElsie would be 125 today!  As most of you know, Elsie had many adventures on Palomar about a century ago.  Her grand-daughter, Barbara Waite has published her first book of Elsie’s time as a school teacher that is just delightful.  Barb is now working on her Mountain days.  Meanwhile, keep reading for some tidbits of her early years and a special Barb has for you to celebrate her birthday:
I AM CELEBRATING ELSIE’S 125th BIRTHDAY !
One hundred and twenty-five years ago on January 22, 1888 Elsie Reed Hayes was born in Alexandria, Virginia. They lived in the home that had been her father’s childhood home.  When I was a child my grandmother  Elsie entertained us with stories of her father being shot when a c…hild during the civil war. Among her keepsakes was an old Civil War pass that allowed passage of the family cow across enemy lines.  Also among her treasures was a newspaper article describing her father’s injury as a child when crossing the lines with the cow.
Her childhood in Virginia was delightful.  Elsie enjoyed her two sisters Alice and Hylinda, her younger brother Gilman and the cousins that lived nearby.  They played in the wooded area located across the Potomac from Washington D.C.  The family included her father’s two unmarried sisters. Since there were four adults and four children, each adult claimed one child to lavish with special attention.  Aunt Annie claimed Elsie and she reserved her special attention for her. This maiden aunt had an important job with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C.  Also among Elsie’s treasures were a couple of old family invitations to Inaugural Balls.
When Elsie was ten her family traveled by train to California. They had hoped that the warmer climate would be better for Elsie’s brother who had a heart defect.  In 1904, when Elsie was age 16, her brother Gilman died in Long Beach, California. Elsie herself lived to be nearly 100 years old.
All of the years that I knew my grandmother her birthday was celebrated with an angel-food cake with whipped cream and raspberries. For this celebration of Elsie’s 125th Birthday we may just have some raspberries and whipped cream.  I am with my sister Nancy and my brother Dan, Elsie’s only other grandchildren.  So it will be fun to celebrate together  tomorrow. I want to make a special three-day offer to those who would like a copy of “Elsie-Adventures of an Arizona Schoolteacher 1913-1916.” For January 22, 23 & 24th only, I will mail (postage-paid within the USA) an autographed copy for $10.00 to commemorate Elsie’s 125th birthday.
Please share this three-day offer with others you think might be interested in a look at the life of a teacher in the Wild West 100 years ago.  I have been thrilled with the 102 reviews for “Elsie” on Amazon.  Thanks to all who have written to say you have enjoyed the book. Yes, I am working on the sequel telling of her years living on an apple ranch and operating a mountain resort.  I hope to be able to give it some undivided attention soon. Please let me know before Friday January 25th if you want me to include a book for you.

New Neighbors – Harrington Family

12th childThe Harrington family addition to Palomar really upped our population!  In fact, they could just about be their own town!  Their newest addition arrived several weeks early to Dan and Jill on December 28th, a son, Ciaran Joseph.  That makes 6 sons and 6 daughters! The timing turned out to be perfect because all of the family were in for Christmas, along with some girlfriends.  Their pic became quite a special Christmas card-to-remember!  When Dan and Jill first came up looking for a retreat they fell in love with the land and view. They are having a wonderful time planning a remodel using some of the cedar from their land that had burned in a fire. You can be sure the addition includes bunk rooms for all their growing family with room for lots of friends too. Dan spends his time during the week working for Teradata Corporation. Caring for their twelve children keeps Jill young and on her toes!  Such a fun family!  So glad to have them as neighbors on the mountain top.

Iron Springs Ranch

houseEscape to one of the most private, and absolutely beautiful 40 acres tucked away on Palomar Mountain. The newly remodeled cabin looks like walking into the cover of a delightful designer magazine.  An album and the MLS info is waiting for you here.  Then bundle up the family and come on up for a hike.
