Harrah’s Volunteers came to the Rescue

Harrahs employees volunteer at State ParkEmployees of Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort come to Palomar State Park’s aid

On Saturday March 2, employee volunteers from Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort in Valley Center devoted half a day at Palomar Mountain State Park to help refurbish the park’s group campground. The day’s project consisted of replacing half a dozen doors on the park’s decades-old old restroom and shower building.

“The old doors were in terrible shape, and the Harrah’s Rincon volunteers really came to the rescue,” says Rick Barclay, chairman of Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park. “Through the generosity of all our donors, we could finally buy replacement doors, but installing them was the bottleneck. These talented volunteers from Harrah’s Rincon really came through for us — knocked it out and they were a real pleasure to work with.”

The door project is just one of several phases in an overall campground improvement now underway at the park which, just a year ago, was destined for closure. Fortunately, the non-profit group that Barclay heads up was able to negotiate an agreement with the Department of Parks and Recreation to keep Palomar open, through contributions from concerned citizens, both individual and commercial.

The Harrah’s Rincon employees were organized through the casino’s HERO program, an employee-based community involvement program that encourages employees to volunteer their time, expertise, creativity and passion to initiatives that improve people’s lives.

Want a great Internet Service?

From: Jim Hamerly [mailto:jim at hamerly dot net]
Subject: Update to Internet access on Palomar Mountain

In 2007, we ran a survey of internet access methods.  Since then, I get frequent requests for updates on available services.  This is not a promotion nor do I benefit from this information, but just an update:  I now use Western Broadband (http://westb.net/) and have been very happy with them.  Very reliable, inexpensive ($40/month for basic service which is 5  mb/sec – but I test faster than that), I think they are the best option if you have line of sight.  They use a small (~12″) dish that must have line-of-sight to one of their mountain top repeaters and will come to your location and determine if you can get signal.  Fred at Western Broadband 760 744 23o3

Cappuccino and Cookies!

Cappuccino and Cookies at Mother's KitchenThe past couple days I’ve enjoyed being out and about ’round the mountain.  Just couldn’t resist capturing pix of our beautiful snow!   Lunch time found me starving so I popped in Mother’s Kitchen.  Did you know they serve Espresso and Cappuccino’s?  Yum!  I had a sip (my first taste ever – can you imagine me on caffeine??!??) then shared, but I couldn’t resist the cookie all to myself!

The cookies that they call “Four Chocolates” are made with four different kinds of that favorite vegetable of many.  (Cocoa beans are a vegetable, aren’t they?)   They are a speciality of DJ’s and fresh-baked at Mother’s Kitchen just for you.  Very yummy with just the perfect amount of crunch and chewy.

Then I did have a Grilled Cheese sandwich with the avocado and sprouts with their delicious bread. Yes, it is ok to have dessert first, as a plaque in my kitchen reads:  “Seize the day – think of all the women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart”.

Palomar Heart Snowman

Eileen Truberman and Palomar Heart Snowman   Is this the cutest snowman?  I met a new friend today.  Driving across the Mountain I put on my brakes and stopped in the middle of the road (sorry Mike!) and had to take a pic of this work of art.  It was so nice to meet someone who truly has a Heart for Palomar!

Eileen Truberman hails from Encinitas but longs for fun in the snow being raised in Rhode Island.  But alas, she and her guest had no sleds!  I invited them over to share our sleds.  Eileen got very brave and went sledding for the first time in 14 years.   Sooooooo fun!

When she is not on the slopes, she teaches the ‘Alexander Technique’.  How interesting!  One of her clients has been Cirque Du Soleil.  Wow.  Thinking there are a lot of you who just might want to visit Eileen’s Website and even download some of her free learning videos or book a class at her studio or even via Skype!

Oh, another delightful day on Palomar Mountain. Eileen Truberman sledding in the snow
