Busy days on the Mountain!!

They started bright and early! Couple dozen trucks with a very nice crew are re-paving Canfield Road. Fascinating to watch and will be a nice improvement. They said they will finish on Friday – would you like to meet some of the guys? Show up around lunch time at the General Store… maybe bring cookies, they’d love that!

Stan Hill was up today with his crew surveying properties for the Dead and Dying Tree Grant. Yes, there is still time to sign up! The more I travel around, the more I see trees just waiting to be firewood. It is amazing to come upon this shed still standing. It looks like that very tired fir and oak have been pals for many years. Maybe they both grew enough to gently move that oak onto the shed. Stan’s crew will be kept very busy, that’s for sure.

In our 27 years of being back on Palomar, we don’t remember this many acorns on the trees before. Many seem to be much larger, too. I was power-walking on State Park Road a couple days ago and slowed down a second for a photo. I had to really watch where I stepped as they are like stepping on marbles! Today I saw the street sweeper making his rounds and couldn’t help but think he’d have a full load pretty quick.

Pott Belly Shop was up today, too. I’d messaged them a few days ago about another job and they were already booked solid. They will be back Nov. 18 and have some time if you need your chimney swept or wood stove or propane fireplace serviced, just give them a call.

Other heavy equipment was out here on State Park Road including a big water tender and then Superior Ready Mix showed up with a load of concrete. We just had All In Septic servicing a couple places and tomorrow a POD will be delivered for movers to load. Rancho Trees had several trucks up to get started getting dozens of their now-dead trees on the ground. I’ve been buzzing around with guys grooming properties to get chip piles staged and ready for chippers. And the past couple days, I’ve had the pleasure of showing cabins and homes to clients dreaming of joining us here on this beautiful mountain.

This warmer weather is good timing for getting some things done. Before we know it, we’ll be treated to some winter wonderland. Enjoy these beautiful Fall days while we can!

New Sink Vanity For Sale

Could you use this brand new, still in the box, white sink vanity?

Winston Porter Panchuri 42 inch single bathroom Vanity Base. Solid wood, 42 inches wide. List price was $1650.00, we got it on sale for $923. Alas, we changed our minds and did something different for our bathroom remodel. So, we have a deal for you – asking $300.00.

It has never been out of the box. There were some things stored on top of the lid so the cardboard is bowed a bit. Peeking inside, everything looks to be in original, perfect condition. It is very easy to pick up as it is being stored on State Park Road on Palomar – level driveway and you can back up right to the box to pick up. If you don’t have a truck, we could perhaps help with delivery.

Golden Eagle taking in the Views

It is so amazing to see an eagle in flight. One of our neighbors caught this one on his security camera. The wing span was maybe 6 to 7 feet. After we talked about it this morning, a story about eagles popped up.

… Several different pesky birds are bold enough to sit on the eagles back and peck at its neck. Relentless, annoying, but the eagle stays calm. The eagle doesn’t flap, doesn’t fight, doesn’t waste energy, the eagle just does one thing – it rises. The higher the eagle soars, the thinner the air becomes. The those other birds? They can’t handle the altitude. Eventually, the bird gasps, loses strength, and falls off. Not because the eagle attacked, but because the eagle ascended. Let the annoying birds talk and peck. You don’t have to respond. Just keep going higher! They can’t follow you forever. Your growth will suffocate their noise. You don’t really need to engage, just elevate!

When is the next Dumpster Day?

It depends. If the second Saturday in November is clear and sunny like in this photo, Cecelia will have a 40 yard dumpster delivered to Robert’s. If it is stormy, the next dumpster won’t arrive until sometime in the spring.

Hoping for a sunny day, Saturday November 8th.

Thankee kindly. I’m still here after my “experience” last year!  and GRATEFULL TO BE. —https://snowchains.tripod.com/sandiegohighwaymansweblogonlinediary/id8.html

Wow, 137 Reviews with ALL 5 Stars! Here’s a couple:

“I had the most amazing experience at Snowbird Tire and Chain! My experience with Tom, the Highwayman was nothing short of scintillating. He was knowledgeable, funny, patient and kind. Entering his garage was like going back in time. There was so much history in there from mountain relics to photo albums filled with priceless memories of family and rescues. And talk about a storyteller! The Highwayman sure knows how to engage his crowd while teaching valuable skills. I would recommend Snowbird chains to anyone and everyone. However, expect a workout! Those chains are tough to put on, but they stay put and keep you safe. Thank you, Tom!” Courtney from Carlsbad

“Every great once in a while, we’re fortunate to meet people along the path of life that make an large impact on us. While I wasn’t expecting it, Tomas happened to be one of those individuals for me. One of the nicest gentlemen you will ever meet and the absolutely the best way to ensure your chains or cables fit perfectly.” Tim from Temecula

“If you are heading to the mountains this winter, you will need chains and this is the place to get them! Thomas is a master of his craft, and will tell you everything you need to know as well as give you all the tools you need to get them on.
I was up in Mammoth during this past week when the Sierras got over 11 feet (yes you read that right) of snow in just a few days, and I am living proof of Tomas‘ tutelage! I “made it ninety” and “Hooah’d” my chains on in less than 10 mins during a blizzard, while others were fussing with their chains / cables on the side of the road. Cannot thank Thomas enough for the knowledge and confidence he gave me. Worth every penny!” Julie from Canada

Tree Grant and SDG&E damaged trees – Update

Updated maps from Stan Hill. Today I have been making calls and several more property owners are signed up. The parcels in purple have been surveyed with the green dots showing the trees marked. Properties in red have the surveyors heading their way real soon. The properties in white have not signed up yet. Driving around there are quite a few properties that could really benefit from this free grant.

Stan asking for help to spread the word for Crestline and Birch Hill neighborhoods. A mailer was sent to all parcels with a water share. Properties without a water share or properties with a well, did not get a mailer.

Good news: Do you have a now-dead tall stump that used to be a beautiful tree but was butchered by SDG&E? Stan has already identified over 40 trees and SDG&E has agreed to have their crews put them on the ground. Stan has worked it out that if the property owner doesn’t want the wood, the grant will take care of either donating it to one of the locals that has connected with Stan for removal, or the grant will take care of removing or chipping the wood.

Here is a tree that I came across in my travels that was tagged for removal but this 20 foot section came down on it’s own. I looked up to see where it came from and it snapped off that trunk from about 70 feet off the ground. Hollow all the way through. It damaged a fence and partially blocked a road.

The grant will remove “dead and dying” trees within 150 feet of a habitable structure. Look around your property and please check the map for your parcel and any other parcels that could be added to the map. If you don’t know the contact info for a neighboring parcel, simply let me know we’ll look them up.

Good news for T-Mobile and Sprint Customers

Meet Mr. Vic. He saw me parked on Crestline and pulled over. He asked if there were any cabins for sale. I asked if he wanted to own a cabin up here. He said, “No, a whole bunch of cabins!”

He took a quick pic of the sign on my car. I asked what brought him to Palomar. About that time the big truck with the crane pulled up. Mr. Vic said he had good news for all Sprint and T-Mobile customers as they just finished installing antenna for good phone service. It should be up and running in about a month or so.

Tonight a guy pulled into our driveway. He looked pretty frustrated. He delivers for Door Dash. He had just dropped of a box for Cliff and Susie but alas, he wasn’t able to confirm the delivery. He had no connection with his T-Mobile service so his GPS didn’t work. He pulled in the right driveway as we are a free hot spot. In a couple seconds, he was able to call the company. He has recently moved to CA from Haiti with limited English. It was pretty interesting as he spoke French. (Where are Renaud and Sandrine when you need them?) He had Door Dash transfer him to an English speaking agent so I could explain his situation. But he still had three packages in his car. I invited him to follow me to April’s house and then to the General Store where I pointed him to the Observatory. Hope your gate was open so you got your two boxes. If not, they are on the inside of the gate and he was going to call you as soon as he had service on his way back to San Diego.

He did figure it out real quick that he will wait a few weeks before he brings deliveries up the mountain again… or, he knows he can always stop by our place.
