Valentine Snow

DSC00782

A few months ago we had all those promises of lots of rain and snow. I would have never guessed I’d be wearing short sleeves and sandals in the middle of February.  February and March are normally our biggest months for snow.  Not this week! We’re enjoying Southern Cal at it’s finest with our bright sunny sky today, above the gray gloom I see down in the flatlands.  Summer weather and no bugs – what a bonus!

Remembering some fun Valentine weather on this little mountain, I just had to send you the link to Snow in 2008. Eight years ago was such a treat with lots of kisses at the post office and love for all!

Happy Valentines Day from the Mountain top!

Tonight!!! Channel 10!

Joe Little Ch 8 - 7in

What a fun call today!  When I answered the phone, Channel 10 News Reporter extraordinaire, Joe Little said, “I’m sure you know why I am calling!”  He was so excited seeing the Caboose story in the Union Tribune, he just had to come up and do a story for tonight’s news on Channel 10!

Brand new neighbors, Mark and Maybelle LeMay, were up for a little mountain tour so they got to be a part of the clip, too.  Click to see!

Joe is sure a great guy and is looking forward to bringing his kids up for some fun time on Palomar.  He’s welcome ’round our fire, anytime!

The next owner of this Ranch with this charming Caboose will have some fun with today’s Union Tribune article and now 10 News making their caboose famous!!!

Who is next for a mountain tour?  Come on up!  I’ve got your ticket covered!!!

Tree is coming down!

IMG_2017

After years of drought, we sure do have a lot of trees failing ’round the mountain.  Cedars die from the bottom, up.  Firs, from the top, down.  A few months ago, the very top of this tree caught my eye.  So sad!!!  Such a beautiful tree.  We have learned that once you see the top of a fir tree look like ‘Fall Colors’, it is just a matter of time and the entire tree dies.  The tops can snap right out of these trees and can become a dangerous situation.  With the Cabin Fever Vacation Rental right there, that tree is coming down today, hopefully before our Valentine weekend guests arrive.

Our local logger, plans a face cut and then should have it on the ground in just a few minutes.  He’ll be there about 3:30 if you’d like to watch: 22119 Crestline.  Pretty amazing to see in action. (Miss the cabin Nick, miss the cabin!)

Every little click COUNTS!

Will YOU join us in upping the numbers to win this grant for Palomar?  Every little click COUNTS!  Great idea from Gina on the Fire Safe Council Board.  See her message below.

How many family members do you have that could ALL give us a daily click?  A click a day for $500.00 for Palomar!  Oh, come on, let’s do it!  (See the details at last week’s post Votes Needed for Fire Safe Grant.)  Please click and share!

RE: Wildfire Community Preparedness Day Award

Hi All,

FYI, I’ve been voting daily for this and with everyone’s help we are currently at 77 votes!  There are only 10 others ahead of us with between 96 and 260 votes so our chances are very good.  I set up a recurring Outlook Calendar reminder through 2/28 so every day I get a reminder and this link takes me directly to the page and I click “Vote”.  It literally takes 10 seconds out of my day so if you are interested in doing the same, here is the link:  http://review.wizehive.com/voting/search/nfpapublic2016/?q=wilson&p=1  If just our little group votes every day between today and the 28th, that’s 119 more votes!

Best,

Gina Aven

Creating Fire Breaks

IMG_1903   IMG_1904

We had a great Fire Safe Council meeting Saturday.  Cecelia Borland, Tim Gray FS, Yvonne Vaucher, Josh Balboa FD, Bonnie Phelps (me), Thomas Shoots FD, and Martie Hale FS, plus Gina Aven and Mike Wilson via speaker phone.

Tim Gray explained the ‘Prescribed Burn’ signs we occasionally see at the Summit, and the work they are doing, when the weather permits and sent the message below. Read More…

Votes needed for Fire Safe Grant

We have the opportunity to perhaps receive $500.00 toward the following:

The very small community of Palomar Mountain would greatly benefit from this grant to help fund an educational Fire Safe activity. Our Fire Safe Council is coordinating an ‘Information Bazaar’ this spring at our Fire Station.  We will have materials available; including evacuation routes, defensible space preparation, fuel reduction, and community chipping programs.  Thanking you in advance!

How can you help?  Simply click to vote:

You’ll see the name Mike Wilson who volunteered to go to work to submit this request.  Discovered the system would not take the Fire Safe Council PO Box, so used his home address in Grover Beach.  Didn’t know that city name would show up – of course, it can’t be changed, so here we are.  Ah, computer systems.  Thanks for your time and patience Mike! Funds would be used here on Palomar!

Please vote EVERY DAY as every dollar counts toward fire safety on this little Mountain.

Welcome to the 2016 Wildfire Community Preparedness Award public voting page.
  • All votes must be submitted by Sunday, February 28, 2016 by 11:59:59 pm ET.
  • Winners will be announced on March 3, 2016.
  • Contest limited to one vote per person, per day.

Thank you!

Oh, we need a wonderful name for this log home!  What are your ideas? Meanwhile, grab your jacket, the family and let’s go see!
