Log Home and 1906 Earthquake

spring   IMG_2306

How fun to answer the phone with a call from the original owner of this charming log home!  He introduced himself as a realtor, on the coast who found “his” property on the web.  As his “favorite home of all time”, he told me about the large window that is part of the wall in the master bedroom.  That beautiful leaded glass survived the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake!

Having an idea for a hand-carved door, he took photos of what he loved about the property – seeing the Observatory, birds, all the trees and deer.  He passed those photos off to a carver in Mexico to create the door.  Another craftsman made the intricate but very solid mahogany door handles.

There is a lot to love about this very private home on nearly 8 acres.  Sellers just reduced the price to give you even more to celebrate on this Fourth of July Weekend!  Check it out and lets go see: http://www.palomarproperties.com/homes/index.html

Elsie’s Mountain FREE

elsies mountain

Like a free book for your Kindle?  One of Palomar’s authors, Barbara Waite has a free deal for you through July 2nd: https://www.amazon.com/Elsies-Mountain-Memories-California-1897-1987-ebook/dp/B018P0M83I#nav-subnav

Of course, “Elsie’s Mountain” is our favorite mountain too – Palomar! The latest book is a must-read with wonderful stories and lots of photos to enjoy.

“Elsie’s Mountain”, as told by Barb, through weaving her local knowledge in with grandmother’s journal, is a sequel to “Elsie- Arizona Teacher 1913-1916”.  With the love triangle and all the drama of living and working 100 years ago as a school teacher, you cannot put that book down until finished. Of course, if you are the kind of person that likes a ‘real’ book in your hands, both are also available from Amazon or Barb (the ones from Barb come with her autograph!).

Welcome Vladimir and Samurai

Vladimir

It was such a pleasure to meet Vladimir Sverdlov as he looked at cabins on Palomar. He considered a couple fixers but then decided on his cabin with lots of updates that is now in his name!  When he came up for his Walk-Through prior to closing, he brought Samurai, who instantly made himself at home, very happy to join us up here in the trees and fresh air.

Vladimir wrote his intro to share with you and is looking forward to making new friends as he and Samurai are out and about on “their” mountain:

“When Vladimir brought two-months old German Shepherd puppy to his house, he knew he should give him something more than a home. So he gave him a mountain (sorry, squirrels). As for the one, who’d been rescued, sitting next to the fireplace, watching seasons passing by, being carried away with the snow floating in the air and descending onto those slopes and writing books… what else one needs in this world?”

Welcome Dana!

Dana Barre is the newest smiling face serving Palomar Mountain!  She is with the US Forest Service and was just recently promoted to the Patrol Captain for our Palomar Ranger District.  Among her many duties, Dana will be who you meet when you call next season for a Burn Permit.  She will do the inspection for clearance, water availability, tools on hand and is the one to give the go-ahead to burn your slash.

We met Dana at our meeting this morning of the Fire Safe Council. Welcome to Palomar!  http://www.mypalomarmountain.com/firesafecouncil/

1963 on Palomar and Today!

CurtWaitePalHeli1963-45x7

Palomar author, Barbara Waite, posted such a fun Tidbit on her blog.  ‘Then and Now’ photos show her husband, Curt, working with the Forest Service on Palomar.  Curt was posing back in ’63 in front of that classic old Chevy at the helipad above Mother’s Kitchen and the General Store.

Now, 53 years later Curt is keeping a watchful eye in several different fire lookouts over the County.

Great tips coming your way!

Last Saturday about 30 people attended the all day event at the FD.  Hosted by Palomar’s Fire Safe Council, they learned how to make their property more fire safe and much, much more.  There were lots of handouts and all raved about the great breakfast (thanks to Chef Cecilia) and a very yummy lunch.

What does this mean to you?  You will all benefit by the tips that will head your way as we all work to get our properties up here on this beautiful mountain more fire safe.

Thunderstorm Tips

It looks like just a small chance of summer thunderstorms heading our way.

We have quite a few new folks up here since I posted this last.  Here are some tips for all of you “just in case”:

THUNDERSTORMS IN THE FORECAST?  Best to unplug all appliances including computers, printers, telephones, TV’s, refrigerators, (12 hours on, 12 hours off) and anything else at risk of frying in a thunderstorm.  Neighbors have lost ALL of the above leaving them plugged in.

Easy to do but easy not to do…

Sure would be nice to get some rain – but no fires, no fires, please!

Lots more Weather Tips waiting for you at http://www.mypalomarmountain.com/snow/
