Palomar Mountain or Mount Palomar?

We must get it right!!!

This little newspaper clipping from the late 1950’s was a fun find. It was glued inside a book of minutes telling of the Palomar Mountain Club.

They said they resented the misuse of the name of San Diego County’s most famous mountain. So, they decided to write newspapers and other media with a gentle warning of what is right and what is wrong.

‘Palomar Mountain’ has dignity and character which ‘Mount Palomar’ lacks, the club said. And besides, ‘Mount Palomar’ is incorrect.

So, there you have it! According to those who came before us in the good old days, it is ‘Palomar Mountain’ forever.

Burrr, it is COLD up here this weekend in the Merry month of May! If there was more moisture in those clouds today, we could have had snow! Better put another log on the fire!

Enjoy,

Bonnie Phelps, with a cup of hot tea on Palomar Mountain…

  1. Hi Bonnie,

Decades ago I was talking to the Post Master Lady of Palomar Mountain and we came upon the PM vs. MP issue which you discussed below. She said somewhat indignantly, “Well where do these people think the ‘mount’ is anyway” or words to that effect. I mentioned High Point and that comment was followed by a curious period of silence on her part.

It’s interesting that some deem PM (five syllables) as a name with “dignity and character” that MP (four syllables) lacks per the newspaper article you forwarded. That conclusion is not surprising under the theory of addition of syllables (“TAS”). This theory holds that any word or phrase with more syllables sounds more formal and dignified. I’m making this up of course, but it is probably not far from the truth. One day I met a lady with what sounded like perfect diction and quickly realized that my speech was gutter talk by comparison. My talking vocabulary was littered with conservation of syllables, hence TAS was born. 🙂

USGS and USPS abundantly confirm that “Palomar Mountain” is correct. However, if we Google “Mount Palomar” we see that the MP crowd is alive and well.

Have a beautiful day on The Mountain. I always enjoy your newsletters.

    Bob
