Spring in the Fall??

You can see a touch of spring and summer lupine … in the Fall out on Birch Hill!  Thanks to Will Parent for sharing the photo from his meadow yesterday.

I captured the deer and turkeys this morning from my desk out grazing in our orchard.

We’re all hoping this tease of a bit of rain comes through.  Meanwhile, we might have thunderstorms so be sure to keep an eye out in case those bolts of lightening come our direction.  It is always wise to unplug your electronics and anything you appreciate not getting fried in a storm.  More info for preparing for thunderstorms about half way down on ‘Resident Tips’.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Free Oak Fire Wood

From: Cliff Kellogg

The oak tree behind the fire station on Crestline Road has been cut down in preparation for the construction of the new county-funded crew quarters. Any Palomar Mountain residents interested in free not-yet-seasoned oak can get a truck load for free. We only ask that:

1. Wood is available for Palomar Mountain residents only and should remain on Palomar Mountain to prevent the spread of GSOB.

2. One pick up load only. No multiple trips. We want to make it available to as many residents as possible.

3. Not for resale – personal use only.

4. Call the fire station first (760) 742-3701 and let them know you are coming prior to picking up. Please don’t just pull in and start loading. Also, make your planned pickup time during reasonable daylight hours.

5. Don’t ask the on-duty crew to help you load. Plan on loading yourself.

6. No chain sawing/cutting on the property. This offer good while supplies last. We will want to keep some wood in reserve for future community center use. Remember it won’t be ready to burn until next year.

Huge Twin Oak dropped for Bunkhouse

It would be fun to count the rings of this huge oak that needed to come down for the new fire department bunkhouse. Thanks to Mike Pique for sending the photos our way.  Looks like Fire Department, Fire Board, Fire Safe Council and Cert folks in front of a lot of firewood.

From: Michael Pique

This is bittersweet but the oak needed go to get the new bunkhouse built at the Fire Station.

New Neighbors – Jakubs Family

IMG_2875

Living in the city and missing the mountains, tall trees and the beauty of nature the Jakubs Family had to do something about that!  A cabin on Palomar! Crescent was raised in western Maryland while Tonja was growing up in Hood River Oregon. They love the woods and everything about their vintage cabin.  Crescent has put his General Contractor skills to work restoring their cabin for their family and future generations to enjoy.  He also keeps busy during the week as the Facilities Director for the Old Globe in Balboa Park.  Tanja has keeps busy caring for Nolan (not pictured), Tori, Harper and Zylen, and enjoys volunteering in their school.  A very musical family, they all look forward to making music and more wonderful ’round the fire on their mountain.

Two truck loads before noon!

From Cecelia Borland:

Come early, neighbors, and bring all your combustible rubbish. Dumpster will be open 9-5 Saturday and Sunday (space permitting).

Each family may bring 2 pick-up trucks full on Sat before noon. After noon, bring as much as you like until dumpster is full. Dumpster will be in the usual place at the at the driveway to the left of the fire station.

This will probably be the last one for the year so don’t hesitate.

Please remember: No tires, paint HAZMAT, large appliances, e-waste, chemicals.

Donations gratefully accepted to offset cost of dumpster.

SpaceX Launch from Palomar

Wow, what a beautiful sight last night!  I get a message about 7:15pm last night to look out to the west.  Mike Pique was looking up to a thick cloud cover in San Diego.  He was hoping we could see the first west coast space launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Our sky was clear, twinkling stars!  We went out on our back deck and saw bright light through the trees.

We ran down stairs and I grabbed my phone.  It was thrilling to see!  Taken from our patio, that is our American flag in the foreground, looking out toward the ocean through those trees.  A couple minutes of beauty and wonder…  and it was gone…  next time!

Dumpster Days

IMG_9314

The Fire Safe Council has another dumpster heading our way!  This one filled up in a couple hours last time, so you might load up the day before!  One truck full per family.  Let’s do this!

From: Cecelia Borland

The PMFSC 40 yard Dumpster is on it’s way back!  Plan ahead for October 13th and 14th, 9-5 both days, space permitting. It will be accessible from the Group Camp Ground area to the west of the Fire Station. The dumpster will be inside the chain link fence like last time.

The usual rules apply: No HAZMAT, tires, paint, chemicals, e-waste, or large appliances.

Please add to come early and donations are gratefully accepted.

 Thank you,

Cecelia for the Fire Safe Council
