Subject: Palomar Resident Wins “Hero of the Month” Competition, Cash Award

Palomar Mountain resident Heather Beer was named as the Thank You Heroes “Hero of the Month” for February 2020.  She recently received her award and cash payment of $1500 (to cover household rent) as part of the contest.

Nominated by an anonymous source, Heather was recognized for her longtime community volunteer work with the disabled, elderly and animals. She volunteered with the National American Red Cross working overseas and was a volunteer firefighter for almost 10 years. She is currently working two jobs to make ends meet and her nominator closed out her entry form with the question “Why can’t more people be as selfless as Heather?”

We want to congratulate Heather on this much-deserved recognition and financial award.  Full press release below on the program (when it was open in February) along with two photos of Heather — In both she is center, flanked by Colleen Moore and Aaron Moore, both of the Thank You Heroes Home Rebate Program.

Open today until 5 or call (760) 297-0838.  I picked up a bunch yesterday but had family for dinner and gobbled up a lot so decided to load up again.  Running down now again.  Great produce and want to keep it local.  🙂

Spring Forward for more ‘Living Time’

Spring forward 2020

Did you change your clocks yet?  It’s that time again.

Mountain weekender, Michael Green’s opinion of daylight savings time is a pretty good one.  Thought some of you might like it, too:

From:  Michael Green

I know it’s not popular with lots of people, but I like daylight saving time. An extra hour of daylight after work is worth going to work sooner even if it is dark. It’s the time of year that feels like you are working to live not living to work.

To the Friends of Palomar Observatory:

I’ve invited everyone to come to the Observatory on Saturdays for the presentations we do in our Greenway Talks Series.

Now regrettably I have to tell you that the Greenway talks are cancelled and, due to the coronavirus emergency, the Observatory is closed to the public for the indefinite future.

We’ve been putting together a schedule of summer events and, for the same reason, those events now are all on hold. I’ll let you know when the Observatory reopens. When it does reopen, we’ll finish putting together a program of events for the summer.

Palomar Composer for The Outpost

Music composer Larry Groupe stands under the dome of the 200-inch telescope operated by California Institute of Technology. In late August Groupe will premiere a new piece for a string quartet which will be performed on the observatory floor of the Palom

Relaxing in front of the fire tonight, I remembered when I first met Larry Groupe.  He was captured by the view from a cabin on Palomar.  The perfect setting to write his music. That was nearly 16 years ago.  Click and search to see quite a few PMNews posts since then and be sure to check out Larry’s website.  I also just came across a fun post about music for a string quartet he created and had performed at the Observatory. Take a listen.

Larry shared the news about his latest project, The Outpost, based on a true story:

the outpost

From: Larry Groupé – “The Outpost” is premiering at SXSW!

Hello friends,

I wanted to alert you to my latest film “The Outpost”. It is premiering at SXSW next week! This war drama film is based on CNN anchor Jake Tapper’s best selling book of the same name, that brought to light the real events of these soldiers and their predicament. Without spoiling anything this film looks at the day in and day out challenges of our unsung heroes which are rank and file troops. Due to the extreme situation they are in we focus on the camaraderie and the dedication they have for each others safety. Full description is here. I wrote the original score and also co-wrote the end credit song.

Starring Orlando Bloom, Scott Eastwood and Caleb Landry Jones. Directed by Rod Lurie.

Most sincerely,

Larry

We expect a theatrical release by this summer, and Netflix will be streaming distributor after that.

Palomar Mountain Cabins for Sale

Longing to see Cabins-in-the-Snow?  We might get a dusting this weekend but right now all is clear with sunny sky.  Just had to share these pix from the first of the year because there is No Business Like Snow Business!

IMG_1155

Grandpa’s Cabin is back on the market! Lender issues came up so buyers weren’t able to complete the escrow.  We were almost to the finish line!  So, this charming cabin is really ready now for a fast closing.  We have a clean pest inspection, septic cert, chimney sweep, and a property inspection, all on file.

When the cabin was built about 100 years ago, several of the neighbors were related and no one worried about property lines.  That little neighborhood is just packed full of wonderful memories.  A recent survey showed that we actually shared a driveway with a neighboring property.  Measurements were done and a deed will be finished the first of the week making it nice and clean for a legal easement.  Click for MLS info and you might enjoy some fun family history going back to 1921.

6DSC02159

Mountain Music has also had recent work done making the cabin better than ever! Brand new tile is being installed in the entry.  The ceiling sprinklers were replaced last week.  Years ago during a cold storm, pipes froze.  This week they are all brand new and have a simple system to drain in the winter.  The septic was pumped and certified.  And, we’re finishing up an easement, too.  The neighbor had a survey a couple decades ago that put the big water tank for the fire department stand pipe, on his land.  Since then, it has been a nice ‘gentleman’s agreement’.  But now, the kind neighbor offered an easement to have recorded.  Life is good!

Everything is ready to go for a smooth escrow for you to move right in, have a great weekend getaway and maybe even a much-loved vacation rental. The present owners have nothing but 5 star reviews!   Click for MLS info and more photos.

Falling Cedar Cabin has another week or so and we’ll have new owners celebrating with their new cabin.  About the same time we should finish up the escrow for the South Grade land with a couple who has been looking for the perfect land the past few years.  Their dream is coming true!

Rain, shine, sleet or snow, I always welcome the opportunity to meet new folks that just might be our next a new neighbor!

What’s YOUR dream?  Let’s connect!

Real Birthdays Today!

geo washington

My mother was born the same day as George Washington.  I remember her being a bit disappointed about their birthday celebrations moved to Mondays way back in 1971.   But, Mom would have been happy to see CJ’s post and would have giggled to be pictured with her favorite president up there on Mt. Rushmore.  Let’s see, George would be 288 today and Mom 95.  How fun is that!?!

CJ is a real estate marketing trainer for WFG Escrow and Title that I appreciate so much.  They are the folks that have been such an asset clarifying easements and removing the clouds on title for so many escrows for my clients up here.   We’re Facebook friends and I just had to share her photo and post with you:

From: CJ Thornberry Brogan
Celebrating Washington’s Birthday! I know, I know… we now call it Presidents Day. But, I’m sorry, I can’t lump ALL of the presidents together and treat them all as equally important. Washington is the Leader who made this great Republic possible! Happy Birthday, George!

… and Mom!
