Books, Postcards, last minute GREAT gifts!

The book signing on Sunday afternoon was quite an event.  Author, Brad Bailey stepped back in time and looked quite smashing in that top hat and tails.  He had a wonderful display of old photographs and artifacts.  His book is delightful reading with many first time published photos.  Very well done.  There are also packages of postcards with vintage shots of Palomar long ago.  Available at the Palomar’s General Store, the Lake Henshaw Store or visit Amazon.com.  Brad autographed mine, then Shirley Thompson, and Scott Kardell… Let’s see, there are lotsa locals that you might catch for autographs.  Very fun!  Thanks Brad and all that contributed!

Merry Christmas!  Bonnie

Earl needs YOU in OLD clothes at the Community Center!

From: Earl Walls

Well folks, the year is just about gone and we have still not finished the remodel of the house at the fire station for use as a community center. We still have a little time left in hopes of getting it done. To do it I need your help. A few of our professional builders have contributed extensively towards getting the project done. We are now at a point where only some shingeling needs to be done on the south and east walls in order to have the outside painted to complete our obligation under the grant received by the VFD. Due to some outside water leakage we have had to excavate and apply water-proofing along the north east walls of the house. We still need to apply a water sealant to the outside of these walls; install footing drains; and back-fill this area in order for the shingle appliers to do their job. This I hope to get done this Friday prior to the work party of the pros on Saturday. Please, if you can possibly do it show up at the house Friday morning, December 18 at 8:00 AM to help me get this done. No particular skills are needed. Do know that the job is messy, so wear old clothes you do not mind getting very dirty. Repeat: Very dirty.

Looking forward, hopefully, to seeing you there. Earl Walls

Free Kittens from Liz

From: Elizabeth Liemandt

We found three stray kittens in the snow last weekend and now are trying to find them a home.  There are two orange ones and a little gray cat.  They have only been around people for about a week, so they are a little skittish, but would probably make great barn cats if anyone is interested.  If you know of someone who is looking for a kitten, they can call us at 742-3572.  They are free, but would prefer that they go to a home that will get them fixed (either at their vet or at the feral cat clinic).

 Thanks!  Liz Liemandt

Cliff and Susie are A-OK after accident

From: Clifford Kellogg

Sent: Sunday, December 13, 2009 8:30 AM

Subject: Accident – we’re okay!

Susie and I were involved in a head-on collision yesterday morning at 8:30 a.m. in her 2006 4-Runner. I was driving at the time. Roads were wet. We were traveling northbound on Pala-Temecula Cutoff approaching a curve when a guy driving a late-model Toyota sedan coming the other way lost control and wound up in our lane. Both vehicles were doing approximately 40 mph. Our car ended up perpendicular across the centerline, the other car stopped with the driver’s door against the guardrail on our side of the road. As soon as I determined that we were both okay I tended to the other driver.

Then Susie and I started traffic control. Susie, the other guy and I sustained only seatbelt burns and airbag bruises. We’re both pretty sore today. The other driver was uninsured.

Pala Fire responded. The engine captain was the brother of Cleveland National Forest Battalion Chief Wes Ruise. The investigating officer from CHP remembered me from the motorcycle accident that PMVFD responded to on South Grade on Thanksgiving Day. We both thank Palomar Mountain resident Don Phelps who happened to come along just after the accident and waited around for us. He took us to our daughter Lucie’s house where I could call our insurance company and get set up for a rental car. Special thanks to Lucie for icepacs and TLC. I suspect our vehicle was totaled, the other guy’s car certainly was. We had the weight advantage. Thank God for air bags and seat belts. We took a really bad hit yet all three of us could walk away.

Cliff Kellogg

Batt. Chief, PMVFD
