Storm News

How much rain?  Don just measured our weather gauge at 5.8 inches for the storm so far on State Park Road.

Is it snowing?  No snow yet but it is on it’s way click for details.  Depending on the site you check, we could be in for a foot or so of snow.

Rosemary sent this article by Rob Krier,  Union Trib.  Here are his comments about Palomar:

<<On Palomar Mountain, the observatory was closed yesterday after winds gusted to 78 mph Tuesday and sleet fell overnight.“We’re really discouraging people from coming up to see us,” said Scott Kardel, public affairs coordinator for the observatory. “It’s time to batten down the hatches. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes in the next couple of waves.”

Today’s storm should be the coldest of the bunch. The snow level could drop to 5,000 feet later today and 4,000 feet tomorrow. The higher elevations of Palomar Mountain and the Cuyamaca range could get a foot of snow by Saturday morning. That could be good news for people who live on the lower slopes of the mountains because there should be less runoff to cause erosion. >>>

Wow!  Palomar Mountain is getting our share of this storm but the snow isn’t to arrive until later in the week (but, ohmygoodness, it was just sleeting a bit!)   For those of you on the mountain, you look outside to see what is really happening weather-wise, but for all wondering about your favorite mountain, there are several links posted for you to check at your leisure.

Robert Gonsett sent this note that is very helpful when you want to know “Any snow yet?”:

1.  <<From: Robert Gonsett   Hey, don’t forget to promote Paul’s Palomar Webcam  in your next newsletter.  It’s been fun to check the Cam today and the temperature is now shown in digital form (very slick).>>

2. Paul’s link is also on the Snow Tips and Pix page, along with NOAA (my favorite weather link – today’s photos posted here).  When I’m on NOAA, I always click to see the Special Weather Statement in bold red letters on that page with even more details of what is coming our way.

3. and 4. And, there are two weather stations to choose from!  The one on State Park Road registered 53 MPH winds today, and at the Palomar Ranch Weather Station you see that it would not be a good day to try to fly in with your helicopter!  🙂

So stay warm and dry and — yum!  That hot bagel-on-the-way from a neighbor’s oven sounds very good!

24 inches of Rain in a week?

Heavy Rain Chance for Measurable Precipitation 90%   Pretty big storm headed our way!         Rosemary has been so great about passing on the news to the Mountain News for years now – keep reading about the latest wet weather for the Mountain.  Wow, just a couple years ago we had about that much rain in a YEAR!    You are always welcome to dry out by our fire… and maybe even have a cup of hot soup!

From: Rosemary Johnston Subject: Fw: Barrage of rain & high surf for Central & South CA coming

My cousin Bruce Rose is a meteorologist for the Weather Channel….   http://www.signonsandiego.com/myweather/

And here it comes …  this will indeed be a double-edged sword … the drought in the Southwest has been increasing, and the upcoming dramatic pattern change will help with that thanks to all the rain and mountain snow, but too much rain too quickly would cause flash flooding and mudslides …

Palomar Mountain could get even 24 inches of rain over the next week.  Take a look at the forcast:
