Lookout History Tidbits

Hello Lookout Fans,

I am not sure how I discoved this website but it provides historic stories of lookouts in every county in California.

Here is the San Diego County info:

HIGH POINT

November 25, 1938:  “Outdoor oddities interest even the most disinterested persons.  Being associated with the out-of-doors so constantly, we see many things that may be out of the ordinary for most folks, but even old-timer Lookoutman Ben Moore on Palomar Mountain saw something the other night that was unusual to him.
     Ben was restless one night and deciding he would take some exercise, started down the trail towards Sourdough Springs.  Just as he rounded the last bend of the rough trail to the spring he came into view of a full-fledged Bobcat “pussy-footin” around a 3 1/2 foot rattler.  The indignant buzzing of the rattler’s war drums had caused Ben to slow down almost to a standstill, thereby not detracting the cat’s attention at the moment.  He was audience for about one minute to a “Nature Play” that may never be seen again by that individual.  The Bobcat was staying about one foot away from the snake and tantalizing it by hissing and spitting at it and feigning occasionally with his left or right paw, thus causing the maddened reptile to strike with lightning-like moves.  As fast as the snake was, the cat was faster and would seemingly make clearance by the skin of his teeth.  After about one minute, the cat’s intuition told him to look around, so backing away from the snake he looked in Ben’s direction and then hit for the brush.
     Ben is elated upon being given a chance to observe this unusual occurence among Nature’s children.  – Fred Varney – Cleveland -”  (California Ranger)

Knights Conquer Palomar Mountain

The mightily slopes of Palomar Mountain were scaled and conquered last Saturday by members of the Smiley Elementary School Knights from Redlands California. Youngsters from Mr. Gary Peplow’s 4th grade class and their families experienced the mountain at its best during their B.O.X. (Bailey’s Outdoor Experience) campout at Bailey’s Palomar Resort.

Scott Kardel led the Knight’s charge through the 200 inch dome, where all were treated to an inside tour of the famous 200 inch Hale Telescope. The Knights and their families were amazed and delighted with their introduction to the Caltech facility, and vowed to keep their lights low when they went back to the city.

The youngsters will now help spread the news about light pollution and the many benefits of DARK NIGHTIME SKIES! Following their return to the campground, they marched off on the Iron Dude Hike lead by outdoorsman Matt Bailey. The students learned about native plants, mountain lore and much more. Later that evening the group gathered for the requisite Campfire Program. This is always a big hit especially when Rhonda Black (former outdoor education teacher) pulled out her guitar.

 The group gathered around “Big Dan” – the old totem pole – for a lively sing-along! The evening program was topped off with fresh baked cookies around the campfire, followed by a magic show and stories under the starry night sky! The Smiley Knights were a wonderful group of bright and engaging children and parents, and what better way to kick off the summer season at Baileys!

Many thanks to Mr. Gary Peplow and the folks from Smiley School for being our very special guests. Sharing our mountain top environment always offers a truly special opportunity for our quests, family and friends! We hope to make the Smiley spring campout an annual event for the Knights of Redlands.

And a special thanks to all who participated in making the youngster’s wonderful weekend possible;

Scott Kardel and the folks at Palomar Observatory for the amazing telescope tour;

Rhonda Black, for the awesome campfire music program;

Vandy & Matt Bailey, for the hiking and assistance;

Noah Harris, the able magician’s assistant;

Terri & Brad Bailey, for the historic tour, magic show and campfire stories;

Tim Rubio, Simley school contact and participating parent; and the Smiley Knights of Redlands, for their energy, enthusiasm and support!

Like some furniture made from Mountain Cedar?

A couple of times a year, I’ve guided Curt Levine to property where the owners would like their cedar thinned out.  Before we took off this morning, I clicked through his website.  Wow!  Thinking some of you would like Curt’s furniture too – tables, chairs, arbors – all made from local wood.  He is quite an artist.

You might have been by Curt’s Studio in Santa Ysabel – I just didn’t realize the variety of furniture he makes!  Connect with Curt on weekends at the corner of Hwy 78 and Hwy 79.  Here is a link to browse his website at: http://www.curtswillow.com/
