Boucher Hill Lookout Restoration Begins!

Many thanks to Brad Eells for heading up the restoration High Point Lookout by the Observatory, and now Boucher Hill Lookout.  Two treasures on Palomar Mountain!  Boucher has much easier access for the Public to also enjoy being in the State Park and we all look forward to many visits enjoying this historic site and taking in that view.  A sincere THANK YOU Brad from all of us!  Bonnie Phelps

Subject: Boucher Hill Lookout Construction Begins!

I am very pleased to announce the building stabilization project has begun at Boucher Hill Lookout. The project will replace the roof sections, windows and catwalk. The 1970’s aluminum siding damaged in last winter’s storms will be removed and new original style wood siding will replace it. All lead paint, asbestos and biohazards will be removed and the floors will be repaired.

The lookout will be transferred to Palomar Mountain State Park at the completion of the project. The lookout will be restored and operated through the cooperation of the Park and the Forest Fire Lookout Association for fire detection, interpretation and education.

The two images show the scaffolding on the building.

To say that we are excited to move forward is a massive understatement…we truly hope to have the lookout open this Summer!

Cheers,

Brad Eells,

What’s for dinner? Try Rimel’s!

Like to eat healthy, delicious food?  Try Rimel’s!  Homegrown Meats, mountain raised, grass-fed beef, local line caught fish, range free chicken, fresh vegtables…all adds up to a great meal!  Many of you know Matt and Jackie Rimel who are often on Palomar and own restaurants on the coast.  Matt is up a couple of times a week cutting oak for their grill. You’ll enjoy seeing furniture they made of mountain oak at Rimel’s too.    Click for their new video that will air on Cox/Time Warner’s this weekend (but you saw it first on the Palomar Mountain News)!

Now, go out and treat yourself to some fine dining!  You’ll be glad you did, that’s a promise!

Asher Paintings of Palomar

I remember hearing stories about people buying paintings that Robert Asher painted of Palomar.  Guessing they were painted 8 to 9 decades ago.  Robert Asher homesteaded the property that he then gave to the Baptist Church in San Diego.  It is now the Christian Conference Center.  Thinking many of us recognize some of these views from that area of the Mountain.

Thanks to Peter, here are photos of the absolutely beautiful paintings the family has in storage.

FROM: Peter Brueggeman

Robert Asher paintings are in a storage unit in Mission Valley, in custody of descendents of Josephine Asher, Robert Asher’s sister. They are selling the family house in El Cajon, from which all these materials were housed.

The paintings look pretty good even with decades of dirt from storage; when cleaned, I’m sure they will look even better.

Asher took a painting class from Maurice Braun in Mesa Grande… here’s some of Braun’s paintings whose style I imagine influenced Asher http://www.bauerart.com/Braun.html
