State Park Update – yes, it is open!

The North County Times came through with another great article and a nice view of Palomar in the winter from the city.  Of course, we really treasure our snow days, from right up here in the State Park too.

Thanks to Rick Barclay and Michael Walsh for all they have done to help keep the park open.  Be sure to visit Friends of Palomar State Park!

Real Estate News

 We’re having fun again!

Those last two postings sold pretty quick!  That 12 acres off Conifer Road had two offers and was spoken for in about 12 hours.  ‘Over the Rainbow’ out on Birch Hill took a little longer – it sold in three days!

The buyers for ‘Back to Nature’ are planning to be in for this weekend’s fun at the Fire Department.  We have had the Bailey Meadow home in escrow twice in the 24 days it has been on the market.  These buyers just finished their inspection and so looking forward to decorating their mountain retreat.

‘Beauty in the Woods’ had a facelift!  The owners had some tree work done and the property groomed  –  what a transformation!  We have ‘guardians’ living there now that have done some clean up work and staged the cabin.  It is just darlin’!  Here are a few new pix on the Cabins page.

A couple more new listings are coming up that are being groomed a bit now so you can take in those views!

What is on the MLS?  Glad you asked!

Here is everything right now on the MLS with a cabin, home or ranch.  Click for all the MLS listings of vacant land.  More pix of most at Palomar Mountain Real Estate.

Glad to open those doors anytime!

Fire Lookout Booth Saturday!

In 2009 the San Diego/Riverside chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association, in partnership with the US Forest Service, restored and returned to service the High Point Fire Lookout on Palomar Mountain.  2012 is the fourth year that FFLA volunteers have been staffing the lookout during fire season.  Several of the recent lightning fires in the area were first reported by the High Point lookout.

Recently FFLA has been working with the State Park to restore and return to service Boucher Hill Lookout in Palomar Mountain State Park.  On September 1 this will become a reality as the lookout will open as an operating fire lookout and State Park interpretation site.  Are you going to be on the Mountain Saturday?  Take time to swing by our booth at the PMVFD Bar-B-Q to get info about visiting Boucher Hill to see the refurbished tower.

Volunteer lookouts are needed.  Come by and see photos of historical lookouts, learn more about the lookouts on Palomar, and get information on how you can assist with these important projects.

Photo is of Ramon Thomas and Curt Waite, Volunteer Fire Lookouts with FFLA – more pix on the way!

Elsie on Palomar in 1904

Elsie Reed Hayes moved to Palomar Mountain with her family in 1904 when her parents, Alonzo and Carrie May Hayes purchased the Mack apple ranch, 160 acres along State Park Road, which they farmed and improved.  Those apple trees, over 110 years old, can still be seen, heavy with apples.  After completing college and teaching three years in Arizona, Elsie and her new husband moved to Palomar to operate the ranch, and soon opened Planwydd Resort.  In 1919 Elsie was appointed the mountain Postmistress.

Elsie’s granddaughter, Barbara Beishline Waite, has recently published a book, the memoirs of her grandmother’s teaching years in frontier Arizona.  In this true story, Elsie’s 100-year-old journals, photographs and detailed letters home paint a picture of a time and place that has since faded. More than this, they are a vivid portrayal of colorful adventure, tragedy and a heartbreaking story of lost love.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Booth on Saturday, meanwhile here is a little more of Elsie in the News

Barb will have copies of her book (currently #1 on Amazon Kindle e-books for Western memoirs) for sale at the PMVFD barbecue for three dollars below the Amazon list price. $2.00 from each sale will go to support our volunteers.
