Palomar Knot and Fishin’ Stories

Ran right into a fisherman cleaning his fish at a campground recently.  But first I need to tell you a story from Barb Waite.  The night before Barb’s sister was married, their mother called her into the bedroom for a little talk.  Katie Beishline told Nancy, “Don’t ever learn how to clean fish”.  (Doesn’t that sound like Katie!?!)

I understand even more Katie’s wise advice after watching Bob Markley, an avid fisherman from Oceanside.  He’d been fishing in the High Sierras and having great success.  I watched him clean three fish.  He is quite a pro and really seems to have a good system.  However, I don’t remember a thing!!!!  (Katie would be proud!)

Bob did say that his favorite knot to use fishin’ is the Palomar Knot!  I didn’t even know there was a Palomar Knot!  He suggested I google it, and it does look like a handy knot to learn!  We shouldn’t be surprised, named after our favorite mountain!

Can you send an email to the Governor?

It just takes a minute!  I just clicked through to send my message to the Governor, please do the same and please forward this to your friends and family!

Here is the latest from Michael Walsh and the Friends of Palomar State Park:

Important news items about the park you love.

UPDATE: Undisclosed funds found within Department of Parks and Recreation. (DPR).

As promised, click here for an important update … and read some encouraging news!   Palomar Mountain State Park has a golden opportunity to get funding from DPR via Assembly Bill (AB) 1478, which was the direct result of the scandal in Sacramento. This bill is now sitting on the governor’s desk for signature.

Click here to send an email to Governor Brown voicing your support of AB 1478. Don’t delay — the governor will either sign the bill, veto it, or make amendments to it by the end of the month, and he could do so any day.

Thank you!

Boucher Lookout In Service Sept 1st!

This is a very exciting announcement!  After several decades of the Boucher Fire Lookout being boarded up and closed, it has been restored and will open Saturday morning, September 1st, 2012!  YOU are invited to tour during times when it is staffed.
If you are able to make it to the Fire Department BBQ, be sure to visit the Fire Lookout and State Park Lookout Booths to find out how you can tour the Lookout.
Curt Waite, a long-time friend, invited me to take a peek a few days ago and here is a little album for you.
Many thanks to Curt and (where are my notes!??) others who have invested many volunteer hours restoring High Point Lookout and now Boucher.  It was pretty exciting to be up in the tower admiring the view when all of a sudden we saw a puff of smoke out there in the San Marcos area.  The equipment wasn’t installed yet to call in the fire so Curt ran down the three stories of stairs to report from his car.  Lots of great action between touching up the paint and getting some vintage equipment up and running again.  Stay tuned for more info and hope YOU get to enjoy the view up there real soon.
