PMVFD Award Dinner Friday Night – Tribute to Earl

Everyone is invited the Friday Night of Labor Day Weekend to a delicious dinner at the Fire Department. This year, the dinner is hosted by Earl’s family as a “Tribute to Earl”.
Earl’s grandson, Andrew is a chef from Seattle and he will be doing the cooking. He’ll have help from Earl’s children; Linda, Richard (his dad), and Jim. Louise found Earl’s secret recipes for the pulled pork, beans and cole slaw in his computer, and Andrew will be using those for the barbecue. Family friend Yolanda is doing the beans and will give the option of Earl’s Pork and Beans, or Vegetarian Beans. Andy is a graduate of the Puget Sound Culinary School and he just may have a couple surprises, too!

Please bring your friends and family, and an appetizer or dessert to share.
6:00, Friday Night, August 30th
At the Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department
After the dinner, the Fire Department will have their Awards program for the firefighters, including a video.

Honey, Stop the Car! Cabin for Sale!

palomar mountain cabin for salecabins for sale stone fireplacecabins for sale palomar mountain honey stop the car

Over the past few years we’ve watched this cabin bloom into a masterpiece! Everything from the new paved driveway, new siding, decks and mostly all new interior. Knotty alder kitchen cabinets, slate shower and a three story spiral connects the 3 bedroom options within 1200 sf. The original stone fireplace was created by an artist decades ago. However, owners are planning their retirement out of state. You can have this cabin to look out and watch the deer in your very own meadow framed with an ocean view over the tops of your forest. There is also a lot to the south that could be included for a total of two acres. More to come real soon but meanwhile I have late afternoon available for Tours!

Mother’s Kitchen and Mina in Sunset Magazine

Sunset Magazine Palomar MountainMina Knapp-Castillo Sunset Magazine Cynthia Lucia

Most of you recognize Cynthia Lucia who works at the General Store. Her smile is even bigger than most days! Her granddaughter Mina Knapp-Castillo, spends the summer with her and was photographed by Sunset Magazine. You can read the nice article in Mother’s Kitchen, and I’m guessing Mina would give autographs when she is helping her very proud Grandma in the General Store.

Sunset recognizes a lovely, “Star” when they see one! Hooray for Mina and Mother’s Kitchen with such a nice article.

Filming of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Virginian on Palomar Mountain

From: Peter Brueggeman
Subject: Filming of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Virginian on Palomar Mountain

Adalind Bailey’s 1959 oral history mentioned the filming of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Virginian on Palomar Mountain. She said they filmed cattle scenes on Palomar Mountain, used the Doane cabin for that tragic scene at night, when the hero guards his best friend who has to hang for cattle theft, and shot “…a lot of the wilder pictures up on the road above where the State Park is now. A lot of it came in around that neighborhood near the Doane cabin, mostly over in the wilder part of the mountain and in this neighborhood….”

Her oral history and some other oral histories relevant to Palomar Mountain are in the San Diego History Center Library archival collection. I’ve been there to look at Palomar Mountain history stuff, and it was interesting… to me at least.

George Doane’s Cabin in 1914 Movie

vir

Many thanks to former cabin owner, Peter for being a continual resource, gathering historical info about our favorite Mountain. I didn’t realize that George Doane’s cabin was used in making this film almost 100 years ago! (We should have a Centennial Party next year, don’t you think?!??). THANK YOU Peter!

From: Peter Brueggeman
Subject: footage of George Doane’s cabin circa 1914

Bonnie, I regularly add resources to my Palomar Mountain History website at http://peterbrueggeman.com/palomarhistory

I recently added a link to film footage of George Doane’s abandoned cabin, used as a set in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1914 film The Virginian. Click for a direct link to that footage via my YouTube.
