Yarn to Spare? Yarn to Share?

Lynda Ruth Yarn Donations

Lynda Ruth makes afghans and quilts.  Lots of them.  For the past 10 years, she has made, and donated about 225 to 250 a year.  (Wow, that is over 2000!)

Disabled Veterans Hospitals, Hospice, and Tri-City NICU have all benefited by her talent and generosity.     Do you have yarn to spare, or yarn to share?  Perhaps you have yarn stashed away with good intentions… ?  Perhaps you’d like to donate to Lynda’s worthy cause and know it will be used and appreciated.   Simply give Ken and Lynda a call at the cabin 742-1759,  or captainkw at cox dot net, or you are welcome to drop yarn off at our place on Palomar.  We’ll make sure it gets to her.  Sincere thanks to all!

Boucher Lookout Open for Tours this weekend!

Boucher Lookout Have you toured the newly refurbished, Boucher Lookout?  Thanks to Bob Price for providing this photo from the 1930’s when his folks operated a resort at Iron Springs.  They took camping guests to the lookout for the “best view in the County”!

The lookout had been closed for many years, and then completely refurbished last year.  Volunteers man the lookout looking for “smokes”.  Curt Waite is there today, and others will have it open Saturday and Sunday.  Nice and clear today so the views would be spectacular!  9 to 4 ish

Directions:  Pick up a day pass (think $8.00 per car), at the State Park and you can drive all the way up, and park outside the lookout.  A volunteer will let you in to climb the stairs to the top and look around from the catwalk.  Pretty interesting.

Lots of pix at these links:

Have you been to Boucher yet?  2012

Pierce Arrow Classic Car Rally on Palomar Mountain

Shoberg Car Show Palomar Mountain   Showberg Family Palomar Mountain Pierce Arrow 2009
Palomar is the perfect place for a Classic Car Rally!  One hundred and sixty folks drove up the Highway to the Stars for an Observatory Tour and catered lunch.
The Shoberg Family has had a cabin on Palomar since the 1930’s.  That was Wendel about 8 years old, with his parents and sister by their cabin out on Birch Hill.  In 2009, Wendel drove the same car ’round the mountain and along State Park Road for their car club event.
It was so fun to meet owners from all over Southern Cal, They L O V E Palomar and were so fascinated with the Observatory.  They said this was their best event ever coming up to Palomar and plan to be back real soon with family and friends.  They loved taking photos of their magnificent cars parked at the Fern Meadow Lookout with views to the ocean.  How many cars???  See if you can count: Click for photos of that fun day.

Make your own Laundry Soap?

Sure!  Making your own soap is quite a mountain thing to do!  Fun for gifts, too!  Thanks, Diane!

FROM:  Diane Ewing

Would you like to make your own – wonderful – laundry soap? How about something environmentally friendly?  Most laundry soaps are about 30 cents a load and full of chemicals, dye, and perfume.  Here is a recipe for a soap that make your clothes soft and clean.  It is non allergic and environmental safe and one cup per load is about 3 cents.

Raney Ranch Retrievers

Raney Ranch Retrievers, Steve and Carrie Raney, Mesa Grande

Friends of the Mountain, Steve and Carrie Raney have an interesting business at their ranch in Mesa Grande. They train, breed, board, sell and compete Retrievers in AKC Hunt Trials. The handsome guy pictured is named ‘Bishop’, he was recently adopted to train for hunting.

Steve is presently at AKC Master Nationals in Smith River, Kansas. 672 dogs are competing and Steve has a total of 12 dogs. He is running 9 and the other three are being handled by their owners. They judge the dogs by their marking, training, perseverance, and style. There are a total of 5 series. 6 dogs from Raney Ranch have made it to the 4th Series as of today. It is a very big accomplishment for their two clients running and handling their dogs for this 4th Series. One more series to go for this competition! Let’s cheer on Rainey Ranch Retrievers!

2200 Rare Books on Space donated to Cal Tech

Ginny Moats

Recently we had the opportunity to visit a dear friend who will be celebrating 101 years of life October 3rd, 2013. Ginny Moats was born the year the Titanic sank, the Oreo cookie was introduced, and when gas went up to 4 cents a gallon!

One of the highlights of her life has ties to Palomar, and I thought some of you might find it interesting too.

Jim, Richard, and Earl Walls, and Linda Walls Fortney

From: Linda Fortney, Palomar Mountain

The Walls Family suffers yet another tragedy and is sad to announce the sudden death of Earl’s son Richard. Dr. Richard Walls suffered a massive heart attack on Friday, September 13 2013. Preceded in death by his mother, Helen P. Walls (2000) and father Earl L. Walls (2012) he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

As everyone knows, the Annual Firefighter Award Banquet was very important to Earl and he paid tribute to the Fire Department by preparing and serving the meal for 17 years. This being the first year without Earl, Richard and his son Andrew, as well as the entire family, prepared and served the Awards Banquet just two weeks prior to his death. Richard was a very popular pediatrician with many accomplishments. A web page has been established to allow visitors to learn more about him, professionally and personally.

David has been in the newspaper business for 40 years, both editing and writing most recently for the Valley Center Roadrunner. Click to read why David quit the Roadrunner, and keep reading to see how you can help support the new Valley Center Press:
