Remembering Mike Stevens

Mike stevens palomar mountain   Always with a big smile, Mike Stevens was one of the most inspiring of all the people I’ve ever met.  He raised the bar for high energy and a love for taking on projects and seeing them to fruition.  Always very giving, and working hard to make things better.   Mike loved life, his family, Palomar and the great outdoors.  He served on the Palomar Mountain Planning Organization, was a welcomed contributor to the Mountain News, and a friend to all.

His family invites you to his service on Saturday from noon to 3:00.  Please visit Remembering Mike Stevens where there are lots of photos, more info for the service, and opportunities to leave condolences.

Stump Grinding on the Mountain

     r Robert_Grinding

Like to have some stumps go away?  Take a look at Robert Carlyle’s new toy!  Give him a call for an estimate 760 742-1891.  Here is a note from new neighbors Wayne and Anne:

I had a most productive day yesterday, working with Robert to rid our yard of those giant cedar stumps!  Robert is one hard working guy – and I would highly recommend him to anyone on the mountain who needs this service.

Thought you would enjoy these pics, feel free to pass them along or use on your website.

He didn’t even stop working when his wife arrived with lunch!  He’ll be back soon with his climbers to limb our big cedars.

Matching funds for State Park to Survive and Thrive

surviveandthrive Palomar Mountain state park

What is having our State Park kept open worth to YOU?

When we have family and friends up it sure is nice to take them to the State Park!  It made me think of how important it is to keep Palomar Mountain State Park open for them – and their kids, and those future generations-to-come!

Wondering how many folks out there might feel the same way?

How much is it worth to YOU to have this absolutely wonderful, 2000 acre park remain open long-term?  A wonderful team of volunteers to ‘Save Our State Park’ is set up to take your pledges or donations.

A couple dollars a day?  A dollar a day? A dollar a week?  A dollar a month?  Whatever works for you.

You decide what it is worth for your great grandkids to be able to fish in Doane Pond, and hike and picnic under those fabulous cedars and oaks!

Just an idea that I thought worth sharing.  Click for all the info on Matching Funds for this year.  Thanks to the volunteers with Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park for all they are doing to promote keeping our park open!

Promo Video shot for “Misa Azteca” PRESS RELEASE

misa azteca joseph gonzalez film crew   misa azetca   isa azteca palomar mountain promo shoot   misa azteca joseph gonzalez   misa azteca promo video bonnie phelps palomar mountain misa asteca film Palomar Mountain

PRESS RELEASE

Last Friday October 11th, a combined film crew from both Los Angeles and San Diego came together on Palomar Mountain to shoot a promotional video for a modern day symphony “Misa Azteca”.

Misa Azteca is an 8 movement concert oratorio, in the vein of a Latino “Messiah”, “Carmina Burana” or Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.  Each movement uses the actual rhythms performed by Aztec dancers in tandem with Aztec percussion, which is then joined with the full power of a Symphonic Orchestra, Choir and soloists.  Sung in 3 languages: Nahuatl (the indigenous language of Mexico), Spanish and Latin; This piece has been performed throughout the world including the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall amongst others.

Misa Azteca tells the story of the spiritual and physical transformation of Mexico during the time of the Spanish Conquest.  It is about the hybridization of two different worlds – Aztec drums and symphony orchestra, Roman Catholicism and Aztec spirituality, Latin and Nahuatle – into a unique bridge between language, religion and cultures.  Besides text from the Roman Catholic Latin High Mass, Misa Azteca uses the poetry written by the Aztecs before and right after the cataclysmic fall of their culture in 1521. The poetry speaks about the coming demise of their culture as prophesied by the return of Quetzatcoatl.  Yet, the poetry also points towards the birth of an entirely new culture, which merged races, culture and faith into the unique nation of Mexico.  The dances and rhythms heard in Misa Azteca tell the story of this spiritual transformation.  The “Misa Azteca Experience” is an emotional and transcendent amalgamation of thought and emotion, expressing the deepest questions of the human heart through music.

Apple Poltuck Idea

apple festival palomar mountain

What to make for the Apple Festival?  Last year Ken Rice made a ‘Creamy Apple Chicken Curry’.  It was amazing!   It is a quick sauté of vegetables, chicken and apples – tied together with a creamy curry sauce.  Served over rice or egg noodles.  So delicious.  Chef Ken invited me to share his recipe with you:

Ken’s Creamy Apple Curry Chicken

1/4 cup (1/2 stick butter)

1 large yellow onion, cut into 1 inch chunks

1 green bell pepper, cored and cut into 1 inch chunks

1 red bell pepper, cored and cut into 1 inch chunks

1 cups cauliflower florets

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-size cubes

3 medium apples, peeled, cored and diced

2 Tablespoons curry power (hot or mild to taste)

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup dried cranberries

1/3 cup toasted slivered almonds

In a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter.  Add onion and sauté until tender, about 6 to 7 minutes.  Add both bell peppers, cauliflower and chicken.  cook until vegetables are just tender and chicken is cooked through, about 10 to 12 minutes.

Add apples, curry power, salt and pepper.  Cook until apples are just tender, about 3 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle flour over everything, stirring to coat.  Add milk and cranberries, stirring and cooking until the sauce comes to a simmer and thickens.  Serve sprinkled with toasted almonds.    Serves 4

So, if planning on this for the potluck, you might want to make a bigger recipe so we all get a taste!  So yummy!  Thanks Ken!

In Escrow Signs and Real Estate News

That cowboy of mine got off his horse long enough to post three “In Escrow”  signs ’round the Mountain yesterday.  Busy, busy!

There are a couple new offerings on the MLS here.    Take a look!  That link takes you to ALL cabins, homes, and ranches for sale right this minute in the entire zip code.  There is a real cute new listing that is priced to go quick and another new home listing that was just reduced.  Also have land and a couple ranches available. You know what Mark Twain said, “They aren’t making anymore of this stuff.”

One of these just might have YOUR name on it!  I’ll update my website real soon for you, but thinking some of these will be spoken for before I get that far!

We have been hovering around only 10 to 12 active listings up here for some time now.  I remember the days when we had 20 places for sale on Palomar, so our inventory is LOW!  Do you have a ranch, cabin, home, or land that you have been considering letting go of?  Let’s connect!  Glad to get your questions answered and appreciate the opportunity to market your property.

Meanwhile, who will be the next New Neighbor on Palomar?    Come on up for a tour!

New Neighbors don’t sit for long!

Wayne and Anne New Neighbors Palomar Mountain

After 7 stints in his heart, it was high time for Wayne to retire and slow down a bit.  He and Anne are one of those couples that I have shown cabins to several times over the years.  They take off in the summers and go to the Sierra’s, coming back with even a stronger desire for their very own piece of paradise that they can escape to more often.  When this cabin came up, I just knew their long wait had paid off.  Living in San Diego, Palomar Mountain is the perfect retreat.  A long walk in the woods, towering trees, the chorus of birds, and the sounds, and scent of the forest are right here within a short drive.  Ah, Paradise.  But, don’t let this photo fool you.  It is staged.  Wayne and Anne are one of those couples that love to be working around their cabin, keeping it pristine, enjoying every minute, or gladly helping friends with their cabin-to-do-lists.   Give them a warm welcome when you see them hiking Birch Hill, Crestline, and ’round the Mountain!

Happy Holler New Neighbor Very Happy!

happy holler vintage pic     Happy Holler Happy Nick

It was bitter-sweet for the family to turn over the keys to the new buyer of Happy Holler.  They had decades of nothing but wonderful family memories.  Those kids in the vintage photo?  They are the adults pointing to the new owner on those same steps, now 40+ years later saying:  “Happy Holler is yours, Nick!  But we’ll be back to check on the progress of your renovation!”

The new owner, Nicolas, was raised in Montreal, Canada and spent his winter weekends skiing at his family cabin in the Cantons de l’Est of Quebec. His love for nature and carpentry are met at Happy Holler. You can follow the progress of his renovation at www.happyhollercabins.com  He said things should be ready next year for guests.  We’ll be watching and cheering him on!  Welcome to the Mountain Nick. We’re glad you’re happy with your holler!
