Just came across this photo and thought I’d share it with you, taken Mother’s Day 38 years ago.

A long, long, time ago, long before seat belts and car seats, our oldest son was born.  The next day was Mother’s Day. Couldn’t ask for a better day to leave the hospital.  I don’t know what I was thinking, I had Brandon in a little sweater set a friend had made, and a snow hat – because we were going home to Palomar  – it might be snowing!  Then I bundled him up in a blue and white quilt my grandma made.  (We left the pink one in the back of the car).  Had him on my lap all the way up the mountain.

We stopped at the Summit (because that is what Mother’s Kitchen and the General Store were called way back when).  You old timers would remember Ralph and Bev Kulk.  They owned the Summit when this baby’s daddy was the Resident Deputy Sheriff up here. Bev was so happy to meet this little guy, who was very happy to cool off a bit and get that snow cap off.    She ran back in the store and came out with this Palomar Mountain Sheriff’s Badge for the newest deputy on the Mountain.

We still have the badge, the blanket, and the boy.  Oh, but he is married now with boys and girls of his own.  So, we have had a chance to use the pink quilt, too.

  Those deer out there on Observation Point are looking for new folks to enjoy that nine acres.  The present owners said “sell it” and even though it is a new listing, they just reduced the price.

There are lots more photos for you now including a couple albums from the owner on Lots and Land.  Their photos show the *Shabin when they used it for weekends and fun times with their Boy Scout Troop.  How would you set up the Shabin?

*Shabin?  Oh, perhaps more of a Shed, but could be a fun little Cabin-in-the-Woods with “little” being the key word.

There is a gal on the mountain that could sure use a computer.  I just got to thinking that maybe one of you have an extra that is taking up space.  She is taking computer classes at the library in Valley Center and a home computer would sure be a fun surprise for her.  Please let me know!

A couple weeks ago I posted about David and Casey needing a rental.  They moved in the Guest House of a property that was just sold with a 30 day escrow.  They need to move again within two weeks. So, they are looking again for a home to rent on Palomar Mountain or Lake Henshaw area preferred.  Casey is coming up today at 4:00 and I am glad to take her to your cabin if you would like to be considered as an option for them.   Immaculate housekeeper, furnished or unfurnished. They have two cats that are part of their family.

Long time friends of Frank and Janice Mendenhall, David and Casey lived here for six years, moved to Idaho, and are coming back!

Do you have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath cabin or home to rent?  Ultimate wish list would include a garage and/or workshop.

Julian reported winds of 101 MPH and from the reports coming my way, I’m guessing that Palomar had had a few days with the wind speed right up there too! We were off the mountain most of the week and returned yesterday afternoon – lots of leaves everywhere, and a few branches down.  But, we were the lucky ones! I checked on my listings, and cabins I could see while making the rounds real quick with a couple appointments.  It was strong enough to blow the newly remodeled, absolutely cute-as-can be cabin above, right off the foundation, take off with the solar system, and twist huge oaks, and a big cedar, right off their roots.

Our Fire Department and County Road Crew were sure busy this week helping open up Canfield, State Park, and Bailey’s from trees that came down in the storm.   SDG&E fixed the power outages right away from what I’ve heard.  AT&T was out and about until late today and I don’t know if they have everyone back running again or not.

 Many thanks to several full-timers reporting damage they have found at weekend cabins!  It was very sad to drive up and see this vintage cabin with the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom area ‘remodeled’ by that black oak.

 There is soon-to-be firewood on the ground blocking some driveways.   Saw quite a bit of a roof on the ground, fencing challenged, patio furniture upside down, and in some areas, lots of trees and branches down.  Most cabins, thankfully, just have a lot of leaves and small branches to pick up on your next ‘stick patrol’.

Are you off the mountain with a property up here that has a telephone?  AT&T has their crews here repairing phone lines damaged in the wind storm this past week.  You might try calling your cabin to see if your phone answers properly.  If there seems to be a problem, the AT&T guy I spoke to said the best way to report is just dial 611 and that info will arrive at a computer in his truck.

Longing for a cabin in the woods?  Formerly named “Listen to the Music”, it has a lovely story about the original owner/builders who were musicians.  They would come up from San Diego and work on the cabin for a little while, then walk the roads through Birch Hill and Crestline playing their bagpipes.  The neighbor said that they liked playing music much more than they liked building so the cabin didn’t get as large as they had planned.  The bagpipes are gone now, but the music remains.

The bank is handling it now and looking for a cash buyer.
