Rosetta and the Comet – Coming Soon!

image

So often I’ve heard folks in awe of our night sky we enjoy on Palomar Mountain.  It is so much brighter up here “a mile nearer heaven”.  I also think many of us are intrigued with exploration of outer space.  Robert Gonsett is one of the subscribers to the Mountain News, and I thought many of you would be interested in a message he just sent my way:

From: Robert Gonsett

For those of you interested in outer space and exploration into the unknown, this may be a banner week.

Background: The Rosetta spacecraft has traveled for 10 years to reach a certain comet in our solar system.  Rosetta successfully went into orbit around that comet last August.  That was the first time a spacecraft has ever orbited a comet.  The comet is officially known as 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko or “67P” for short.  It’s about three miles long.

This Wednesday: If all goes as planned, a space-probe the size of a washing machine will be released from Rosetta and will land on the comet’s surface Wednesday morning at 7:35 AM PST.  This will be the first time a spacecraft has ever soft-landed on a comet!  A host of scientific tests are planned for the comet’s surface.

The Rosetta mission is perhaps more exciting than the first moon landing because the technical challenges are greater. This comet turns out to have very rough terrain with housed-sized boulders, craggy craters and 500-foot-high cliffs.  Add to that the complicating factor that the comet is outgassing and those gasses alone could topple the lander.

I can’t wait to see what will happen. For more information, Google “Rosetta spacecraft” and you’ll find a number of interesting articles.  Hopefully the mainstream media will take notice.  (Even if the lander fails, the Rosetta orbiter will continue to circle the comet and give us a ringside view as 67P approaches the sun and massive outgassing occurs.)

The photo attached was taken about a month ago from the Rosetta orbiter. The big flat objects in the center of the photo are a bank of solar panels to power the spacecraft.  Above the panels are two spheres.  Those spheres are connected to each other and you are in fact looking at Comet 67P.

While the news media is obsessed with ebola, ISIS, politics and similar earth-bound matters, don’t forget to think about the heavens above. Let’s hope for a successful landing and fasten your seat belts for Wednesday morning.  A great exploratory attempt is about to get underway.

Have a good week, Bob

Thanks from Assemblymember Marie Waldron

From: Tom Stinson for Marie Waldron [mailto:Tom.Stinson@asm.ca.gov]

The election is behind us…

Now that the election is over, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the people of the 75th Assembly District for the trust you have placed in me by allowing me to continue to serve as your voice in Sacramento.

As a small business owner, I am keenly aware of the burden the state’s excessive tax rates and overbearing regulations place on all Californians. Consequently, I am very pleased by the “A” rating I recently received from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association in their Legislative Report Card for this session. As a fiscal conservative, next session I will continue to oppose any proposals that would undermine California’s anemic economy with higher taxes.

As most of you also know, I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and am proud of the “A” grade recently awarded me by the National Rifle Association. While protecting the Second Amendment is often an uphill job in Sacramento, I will continue to fight for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, one of our most fundamental civil rights.

Lower taxes, fiscal solvency, less burdensome regulations, protection of our constitutional rights, better schools, stronger families, enhanced public health and safety – these concerns drive me as a mother and citizen. I trust these are some of the reasons you have honored me with another term in the Assembly.

Please know that I will continue to fight on behalf of the citizens of this district and that I look forward to continuing to serve you to the best of my abilities.

Tom Stinson

From Palomar to Rome – Misa Azteca

ma1 ma2  021

Congratulations to composer Joseph Julian Gonzalez on the success of his composition, Misa Azteca performed in Rome last week.  Some of the promo shots taken on Palomar Mountain in 2013.

From the composer: Joseph Julian Gonzalez

“Here are the first and last pages of the Full Orchestral Score of Misa Azteca. I have been working on this 50 minute, 8 movement choral/symphonic work for over 23 years, re-writing movements, throwing parts out and adding parts in. This has been a very personal project that is very dear to my heart and that I’ve worked on in between TV and Film gigs. I am glad to announce that Misa Azteca is officially DONE.

I have to sincerely thank the immensely talented Joel Clarkson for re-orchestrating Misa Azteca over the past year. Joel started orchestrating for me in my film and TV scores about two years ago, and I recognized a young man of immense talent and the best orchestrator I had ever worked with. Joel took my film and TV compositions to another level and worked as a cool head in the stressed-out world of the industry. Joel has a spiritual depth to him that comes out in his work. I knew that I had found the right person to take Misa Azteca to another level.

Tomorrow in Rome, at the Basilica of St. Ignatius, we will present the final version of Misa Azteca. It is ready to go out into the world!”  (Performed October 26, 2014)

“Introducing the wonderfully talented and lovely soprano, Dalia Rodriguez, a treasured member of Team Misa Azteca. Dalia is an ace sightreader and incredible musician; has a voice like an angel; and although she possess many gifts, is a very generous and humble person. She is featured in our updated Misa Azteca Promo Video:”

Spinning Yarns and Swinging your Partner!

Cecelia Borland Palomar Mountain  Visited with the Borlands tonight over dinner.  Cecelia has her pioneer costume all ready to go again for this years Apple Festival.  She will be back with her sheep and goats for a little petting zoo.  And, have her spinning wheel, along with several other ‘Spinsters’!  It is fun watching the process of how yarn is made and just a little of the work that was involved for those gals back in the days… and still today, on Palomar Mountain!

But, when the square dance caller gets going, even those Spinsters get up and take a break!

Y’all come on up and swing your partner – or tap your foot on the sidelines.  It’s all Festival fun!
