Dafodills, Turkeys, and Birds before the Rain

dafodills on palomar mountain   palomar mountain turkeys

The mountain is painted with so many early daffodils. Picked a couple bouquets today with this promised rain and maybe a bit of snow.

The wildlife sure seem excited about the change in the weather!   Here are just a few of the flock of about 40 turkeys down in our orchard today.  Later about 200 pigeons flew in and out too fast for my camera.

Stoke up your fire!

Badwater Race to Palomar in May

Joseph nakamura Salton Sea to Palomar Badwater Race  joe 2.jpg  Palomar mountain Badwater race

This is one tough race to begin at the Salton Sea and run the 81 miles to Palomar.  Last year it was 99 degrees out in Borrego where they went through a wind storm before reaching the mountain.  It was after dark when they hit Ranchita, then greeted with rain and 34 degrees on the Mountain. I learned about this race from Joseph Nakamura who participated last year an is back this year with a new team, staying at Cabin Fever.  I thought some of you subscribers would like to hear about the race, too and maybe even be out that first Sunday night in May to cheer them on to the finish line. Happy Valentine’s Day to All

love on palomar mountain

Saw this little sign the other day in a store.  Made me think of ‘The Treasures’ – our grandkids.  I often say to them “Have I told you today? I love you.  I really, really love you…”

This morning I woke up remembering another little story and thought I’d share it with all of you Mountain News subscribers.  Oh, it is more of a Facebook post… but, for some reason – you mountain folks are on my mind, so decided I should post it here. Read More…

Friends of Doug Tillinghast

Dough Tillinghast Memorial Obituary

Many of us have fond memories of “Cool Cat” Doug singing occasionally at the Fire Department Barbecues.  A very talented musician, and a kind, family man.  Doug’s roots to Palomar go back about 100 years. His grandfather was talented and much-loved, too.  I can always recognize a Tillinghast fireplace.  Doug’s grandfather built the Lodge at the end of Crestline, and left a beautiful signature on quite a few cabins up here.  Read More…
