Happy Patient and his Dr. Vaucher

Remembering back to the first time I showed property to Brian and Yvonne on Palomar. They just had to have their land that day and later bought a cabin next door. Brian shared that Yvonne was a “neo-natal intensive care doctor who does very well with people under two pounds”.

A few years later we got a call from our son Brandon, saying that his wife, Heidi had just delivered their first son. He arrived early so was in intensive care. We rushed down to the hospital and met our neighbor, Dr. Yvonne Vaucher in the hall. We told her we were there to see our new grandson. She said, “Oh Judah Phelps??? He’ll be just fine!” He was one of her larger patients that day and I took the photo of the 5 pound, 4 ounce little guy in his father’s arms.

As most of you know, their family owned the ranch and lived next door for five very fun years. They followed their dream and bought a farm in Missouri, moving last year. A couple weeks ago, Brandon brought the boys out for a visit and Judah is now 15 and 6 feet tall!

When I heard that Brian and Yvonne were on the mountain, I asked to run Judah over for a photo. It was fun for him to meet his doctor from that very special, miraculous first day of his life.

Hope you are all enjoying celebrating moms. We’re also thankful for the doctors who help get them off on good footing. Well, yes, he does have shoes, but growing up on Palomar, he and his brother Atticus, their two sisters, Kiki and Sunshine were free-range and well grounded as they are quite fond of being barefoot.

The guys left for home yesterday morning after 18 delightful days with us. I just talked to Heidi. She and the girls drove from their home and the men-folk just pulled up at a special restaurant in Tulsa for a fun Mother’s Day dinner. Ah, the family adventures!

Happy Spring days and many adventures ahead for all of you!

Ridge Pointe A-Frame For Sale

So often when I’ve asked clients what their dream would be for a wonderful fulltime home or weekend getaway on Palomar, they tell me “An A-frame”. Perhaps A-frames were featured in a favorite delightful old movie. Maybe their grandparents had a fun cabin up in the woods that is remembered fondly with the steep pitch to the roof and big, open beam ceiling…

Recently folks have been looking for a private location where they can be self-sufficient with their own well, a solar system and be able to do some gardening!

This cabin could be perfect! It is newly remodeled and turn-key, ready to move right in! You are invited to click for the info and lots of photos then, let’s go see!

First Daffodils and Real Estate Update!

Apparently the official first day of spring was a few weeks ago. It would have been very hard to convince those of us on Palomar Mountain. Many were still dealing with lots of snow. In fact some still are!

Yesterday I was off on an adventure, showing property in our 6-wheel drive Polaris. I mentioned that I should have brought a chain saw in case a tree was blocking the little dirt road, but I didn’t think about snow. Steve was up to see property and found himself put to work, getting out to drag branches so we could get by. Then, I was glad we had those beefy tires as we had fun backing up and gunning it to get through the patches of snow; still a foot deep in places!

Had to smile back this morning when I saw this happy little daffodil show it’s face. Yes, trees are budding out, the land is greening up and nine listings will be ‘springing up’ as active real soon!

So yes, we’re still here, busy as ever with Real Estate on the Mountain and plan to split our time with family in Missouri. Meanwhile, our son Brandon is heading this way with the boys for a visit and work on some real estate projects together.

Questions about the market? Thinking of selling your property? Like to buy on Palomar Mountain? Thinking about moving out of state? We can help with that, too!

Always glad to get your questions answered!!! More fun times ahead!

Free Pine Wood, Needles and Cones

Do you like to cut your own wood? Make pine needle baskets? Use cones for fire starters or décor? Dry cones make great fire starters in your wood stove or campfire; guessing there are several hundred cones on the ground.

A couple big Coulter pines came down in that last storm on a client’s land. The trees are limbed and ready to buck into logs or cut some large pieces and have them milled. It’s up to you. Pine dries fast once it is bucked up so you could have the wood for next winter.

There are lots of branches and cones on the ground just waiting for the chipper. Would you like to get in first to glean? You are welcome. Can’t take too much. The snow is melted on this property now so very easy to access. You are on your own with cutting and hauling, First come, first dibs.

Just let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Grab the lamps! It’s an earthquake!

Standing at the scanner upstairs at Nathan’s place, we experienced our latest earthquake. Those chimney lamps would not have survived if I hadn’t been right there. I grabbled the tops of each as they were tipping over. That first one was a wedding gift to my grandparents in South Dakota at the beginning of the last century. It is turning a lovely shade of purple. The other was always on this same dresser, in my grandma’s house in Vista; nice they both survived.

I did happen to think back to what we were taught to do in elementary school during those split seconds; “Duck and Cover”! After being in quite a few earthquakes now, I am quite certain that whoever made up that idea of duck and cover has never been in one. I always saw it as an exercise to get my pretty dress dirty crawling under my desk. With my experience, when a quake starts to rumble, I’ve never felt I had the time to duck anywhere. It is amazing what we have been taught to “grab on to”. Think I will stick to the lamps.

Just thought of another earthquake experience up here. We were talking to the County Road Forman at the time, Andy and his wife, Nell Ridge about buying this home in September of 1975. We were in the living room and heard a ‘train coming’. I know we don’t have trains up here, but that low rumble was coming from way out to the west. I looked out the window at more apple trees than we have now, down in out little orchard. Row by row, they lifted about 3 feet out of the ground, like a wave coming toward us. I knew we should ‘duck and cover’ or at least run outside, away from under our second story and the huge beams. I remember thinking it might be my last seconds on earth. That ‘wave’ came up to the bottom of the bank and the ‘train’ stopped. Andy and Nell were content on sitting on the couch but Don jumped up to look out the window, too and saw the orchard wave coming toward us. So thankful that train stopped right at the bottom of the bank about 40 feet out from the house.

This quake was apparently a 4.2 on Palomar, maybe 3 miles from north west of our house.

All is well…

Bonnie
