Nate Harrison would have been about 190 years old!

What a great evening going through some State Park Slides!  As many of you know, there is stone memorial to Nate Harrison on the Grade that bears his name. One of the fun discoveries of tonights “Name that Slide Show”was a slide of this plaque that used to be at the entrance.  The plaque was stolen a number of years ago.  It was great to have a photo to see the wording:

Nathan Harrison’s Spring

Brought here a Slave about 1848

Died October 10, 1920 Aged 101 years

A Man’s a Man For That

Thanks to the sharp eyes of Mike Pique, he realized that tonight would have been 90 years since Nate Harrison passed away.  Kinda special that we found a photo of his plaque tonight, don’t you think! We sure do think it would be nice to have the plaque returned or another made!

Like some great reading on Nate Harrison?  David Ross, mountain resident and editor of the Valley Center Road Runner did a wonderful series.  Click for David’s award-winning articles on the man and the legends of the Nate Harrison Grade.

State Park Slides – who are these people?

New State Park Ranger Jessica has some trays of slides discovered in storage of past employees and people at the State Park over the years.  She is asking for help to identify the folks in the photos.

Come on over!  Tomorrow night at 5:00, Sunday, October 10, 2010

Bring a favorite munchie to share and John Lesac will have the projector and big screen set up in the Hay Barn.  Former Post Master, Shirley Thompson will be there and Jessica is asking for whoever else can come to fill in the blanks on the slides that span several decades.

Directions: Take State Park Road to Fern Meadow Road (directly across from the County Road Station). Turn right, drive to the top where you will see a big stone wall, turn right again and keep going to the Hay Barn.

We have chairs and bales of hay to sit on and name those slides!

And there will be coffee, tea, hot chocolate and popcorn.

Wow! New Webcam!

Oh what a beautiful view from Erik’s webcam!  I got to see it in person during the rain storms!  Looks like Del Mar was getting a nice rain at the time!  Also loved seeing his new railing for his deck! Six inch (or so) slats of glass. Hummmm, thinking we’ll be seeing more of that ’round the mountain!  Thanks to Eric for sharing his webcam!  Guessing his link will become a favorite of many  making it real easy to see what is happening weather-wise on our favorite mountain!

From: Erik Thompson

I installed a webcam looking out over the County. No thermometer yet but I’ll install that later. Feel free to pass on the link on your blog: http://www.palomarmountainwebcam.com/

Cabin at the Pond For Sale

The Cute-as-can-be Cabin at the Pond has had several owners in my 10 years of Real Estate on Palomar Mountain.  Well, it is time for someone new to take over the peaceful views from this enchanting cabin off Bailey Meadow Road.

Since this is a very private area through a neighbor’s gate, the seller and neighbors ask that there be no drive-bys.   Your cooperation is much appreciated and I am glad to open the gate and door for you anytime.  You will love your view for all seasons, that’s a promise!

$150,000 with an approval from the bank for a short sale.  Let’s get it rolling!

Palomar Mountain and the Crater Lake Monster

CLM-Bill and Glenn.jpg Thanks to Peter for sharing his wonderful collection of historical materials of our favorite Mountain!  We have a copy of the film shot on Palomar – now that could be a fun movie night real soon!  Stay tuned!  Bonnie Phelps

From: Brueggeman, Peter

I recently added a PDF of materials on that monster movie shot at some Palomar locations. My PDF is entitled “Palomar Mountain and the Crater Lake Monster” and is  linked from the “brochures and short works” section on my site:  http://peterbrueggeman.com/palomarhistory/index.htm

You got me onto this topic several years ago when Richard Cardella (who played the sheriff in the film) posted to your Palomar Mountain News email list. I contacted him and then visited the director Bill Stromberg, who lives in Oceanside; Bill shared some photos and materials with me.

Movie Night Saturday in the Hay Barn

Everyone is invited to come on up for a movie Night this Saturday at 6:59 pm.  Thanks to John Lesac for setting us up with a fancy surround-sound system.  Woo Hoo!  We’ll be watching a favorite of many, “Second Hand Lions”.  (From what I hear it could have been filmed on Palomar and our neighbor was the star!  Bill may make a special appearance and just might be talked into autographs).

Saturday Night, 6:59 pm

Coffee, hot chocolate, tea and popcorn will be waiting for you.   If you’d like to bring your favorite appitizer or dessert to share that is wonderful but not necessary.  Come and enjoy.

However, BYOQ  – You might want to bring your own Quilt for curling up on a hay bale to watch the show.  There are some chairs, you are welcome to bring extras just in case.   It will be warm in the barn.

Directions:  Take State Park Road to Fern Meadow Road (directly across from the County Road Station). Turn right.  When you get to the top of the hill, turn right at the big stone wall.  Drive on up to the Hay Barn.  Lots of parking.

Clear or rainy, the show will go on.  🙂

No reservations necessary – just an old fashioned evening in our barn with Palomar friends.
