Keep a sharp eye out for Rattlesnakes

Great ‘Before and Afters’ of fuel clearing success

From: Robert Gonsett

The following may be of interest to Palomar residents.  “The Dutch Creek Fire” write up from the USDA Forest Service documents the effectiveness of fuel clearing activities in preventing widespread loss of structures when the inevitable fire occurs.

Best regards,  Bob Gonsett

“Then and Now” with the little boy in the lead car!

What a fun afternoon I had a while back meeting Jim Feryan.  He was just a little boy when he got to ride with his dad driving the lead car, up the Mountain, with the mirror for the Observatory following behind.  Jim brought a few old photos.  Click to see “Then and Now with Jim” and read a little about his happy memories from the good ole days.

(When the photo link opens, you can read more at the bottom of most pages then click on that first photo to enlarge.  Click “next” at the top right of the photo page to scroll through the photos).

Movie Night – Beauty and the Beast

Everyone is invited to head to the Hay Barn tomorrow night for Movie Night with John Lesac and his fancy surround-sound system.  A world of enchantment awaits with Beauty and the Beast coming our way via high definition Blue Ray.

Sunday Night, Oct. 17th at 6:59 pm

Coffee, hot chocolate, tea and popcorn will be waiting for you.   (We promise we’ll have the power turned on this time so it is HOT when you arrive!) If you’d like to bring your favorite appetizer or dessert to share, that is wonderful but not necessary.  Come and enjoy.

BYOQ  – You might want to bring your own Quilt for curling up on a hay bale to watch the show.  There are some chairs, you are welcome to bring extras just in case.   It will be warm in the barn.

Directions:  Take State Park Road to Fern Meadow Road (directly across from the County Road Station). Turn right.  When you get to the top of the hill, turn right at the big stone wall.  Drive on up to the Hay Barn. Please drive slowly to keep the dust down. Lots of parking.

Clear or rainy, the show will go on.  🙂

No reservations necessary – just an old-fashioned evening in our barn with Palomar friends.

Want to see the new Hyundai Sonata on the Mtn today?

Just spoke with Simon-the-trail-scout for Hyundai Canada on the mountain for the day.  He was putting up signs directing drivers for the launch of the Hyundai Sonatas that will be on Palomar twice today.  Fourteen journalists flew in from all over Canada and the US.  They will be sharing the driving of seven cars to later publish their views and photos of the new Sonata. The plan is for the first group of seven cars to stop at the General Store for snacks about 12:30 and the second group at about 3:00 or so.

I found it interesting that with all the mountain roads available to them in Canada, they choose Palomar for their launch.  This Mountain is a pretty special place, don’t cha think?

Nate Harrison would have been about 190 years old!

What a great evening going through some State Park Slides!  As many of you know, there is stone memorial to Nate Harrison on the Grade that bears his name. One of the fun discoveries of tonights “Name that Slide Show”was a slide of this plaque that used to be at the entrance.  The plaque was stolen a number of years ago.  It was great to have a photo to see the wording:

Nathan Harrison’s Spring

Brought here a Slave about 1848

Died October 10, 1920 Aged 101 years

A Man’s a Man For That

Thanks to the sharp eyes of Mike Pique, he realized that tonight would have been 90 years since Nate Harrison passed away.  Kinda special that we found a photo of his plaque tonight, don’t you think! We sure do think it would be nice to have the plaque returned or another made!

Like some great reading on Nate Harrison?  David Ross, mountain resident and editor of the Valley Center Road Runner did a wonderful series.  Click for David’s award-winning articles on the man and the legends of the Nate Harrison Grade.
