A film crew from San Diego will be shooting a classical music video on Palomar Mountain Friday, October 11 and Saturday morning, October 12.

The piece of music is called “Misa Azteca,” a modern, symphonic oratorio that has been performed to sold out audiences in Carnegie Hall (twice), the Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, St. Denis in Paris and recently at the Festival of the Aegean in Greece.

Musicians from San Diego and Los Angeles will be traveling up the mountain including percussionist Chris Garcia who tours with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and tenor Joey Molina who has sung in concert halls around the world.  Misa Azteca was written by film and concert music composer Joseph Julian Gonzalez, a professional composer of 24+ years.

Would you like to join us as an extra?  Come on out!   We’ll ask the men to be dressed in black pants and a black shirt and women to be in black dresses (long preferred, but can work with short dresses) or black skirt and black top.  We could use extras 16 years or so and older.

Borrego Days and Ernie’s Book

ernie cowan photography borrego springs book

As the temperatures drop, many of us love to slip away to Borrego Springs to soak up some Fall or Winter sun, take in some fun events, and enjoy their restaurants.  Borrego is just an hour away, and a beautiful drive.  The end of the month is Borrego Days!

(Let’s see, you can visit Borrego Days Friday or Saturday, and still fit in Apple Days Sunday afternoon on Palomar that same weekend!)

Photographer, Ernie Cowan published a book  that you can have for your very own, showing some of the beautiful desert views through his lens.

Spring Comes to Palomar Mountain

DSC03032

One couple that has their cabin on the market, has enjoyed so very much, writing poetry.  This mountain can sure be inspiring!  Kathy Derengowski has sent her four seasons of poems our way.  I’ve published three but just found this one about Spring in my ‘Drafts’ for the Mountain News.  Thought some of you may enjoy reading Kathy’s poetry, as you sit around your fire tonight, anticipating our first dusting of snow this week!

Spring Comes to Palomar Mountain

When springtime comes to Palomar,

To chase away the gloom

The squirrels come out of hiding

The lilacs are in bloom

Winter has been banished

As things begin to grow

The earth begins to hum and throb

We’ve seen an end to snow.

The sun shines on the mountain

The streams flow swift again

Woodpeckers drum a rat-a-tat

A hammering refrain.

Wildflowers put their finest on

And make a grand debut

Doane’s pond is ripe for fishing

And sparkles just for you.

The sleeping seeds start sprouting

The slopes turn green, and then-

We see the promised Easter,

Our spring has come again !

Rancher’s Legacy

Joel Mendenhall Ernie Cowan NCTimes article

Friend of the Mountain, Ernie Cowan, wrote an absolutely beautiful tribute of Joel.  His words paint a lovely picture of the hard-working, gentleman rancher, Joel Mendenhall.

Astronomer will share knowledge of the Heavens and more!

Astronomer will share knowledge of the heavens October 4 & 5 at Bates

 Posted by David D. Ross

Improve your knowledge of astronomy the weekend of October 4 & 5 at Bates Nut Farm when astronomer Bob Karl, formerly of Lompoc Observatory, will be at the farm beginning at dusk.

Karl will share his knowledge of the heavens, and will point out constellations, planets, and other interesting things in the night sky. Guests may bring their own telescopes, or use one of his.

For those needing instruction, he will show how to use a telescope. With the new moon occurring on October 5, and a location far away from city lights, this should be a great opportunity for star gazing!  The event will be held in the East Field, near the Farm Zoo. Free admission, all are welcome.  For more information, guests may contact Bates Nut Farm at 760-749-3333, email info@batesnutfarm.biz, or visit www.batesnutfarm.biz.

88.9 from Palomar – Remembering Chuck Smith

the jeff valley, palomar mountain

A couple years ago we were driving along the road in San Diego and saw a cardboard sign with only the numbers:  88.9.   For fun, I turned the radio on and heard a brand new station.   KSDW transmits from Palomar Mountain and broadcasts on 88.9 MHz.   It is owned by Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa.   When I’m in the car I enjoy listening to Chuck Smith, and the many other programs.

Calvary Chapel owned the beautiful Jeff Valley on Palomar.  I had the privilege to represent them in the sale a couple years ago.  What a pleasure to meet the pastor, Chuck Smith, along with one of his grandsons, and several other folks for lunch at our Round House up here.   It was a fun time.

The radio station posted that Chuck Smith slipped away from his earthly home today.   As one website said, “Chuck Smith will be remembered by many, but has influenced many more”    I think it is kind of special to continue to be able to turn the radio on, or listen live, online at http://www.ksdwradio.com/  and hear Chuck’s  voice coming through, loud and clear, for years to come, from antennas on our favorite mountain.
