Apple King Of Palomar Biography now Available!

clark cleaver palomar mountain

Peter has done it again!

Untold hours of research and work was done by former cabin owner, Peter Brueggeman.  Peter has produced another wonderful read, free of charge, telling of history of our favorite mountain.  His most recent is a biography of Clark Cleaver, one of Palomar’s pioneers.  He planted many acres of apples out here on State Park Road.  We were told, when we first purchased our place, that Clark Cleaver planted the apple trees. We’re still enjoying those apples 100 years later.

Peter’s research turned up some delightful new photos along with a glimpse at this kind man’s life.

From: Peter Brueggeman [mailto:peterbman@gmail.com]

I’ve completed a biography of Clark Cleaver, the ‘apple king of Palomar Mountain’ which is available on my Palomar Mountain History website, in the topmost Books section, at http://peterbrueggeman.com/palomarhistory/  (seventh story down the page)

Cleaver tended his apple orchards along State Park Road at the bends there, owned land elsewhere on Palomar Mountain along with his younger brother, and had a considerable history before moving onto Palomar Mountain in his latter years. Robert Asher says that Clark Cleaver didn’t say much about himself, and so it took extensive research in a variety of resources to put together the thread of his life.

The photo is of Clark Cleaver of which I’m fond… it is scanned from a Robert Asher glass plate negative. I came onto a few of his glass plate negatives when Asher’s family gave me Robert Asher’s remaining files/papers. I’m pleased the Clark Cleaver biography held your interest. Researching and writing it opened up interesting and surprising historical paths for me, e.g. California Indian wars, the California gold rush, early Nevada homesteading. Researching Clark Cleaver led me into the history of Palomar Mtn roads and road building …. sorting out the status of the various roads over time. The commonly used road up/down Palomar Mtn changed over time. In reading back, it was frequently not referred by specific name, so it can be a puzzle to figure out which road was involved when.

June Snow Story

wil

We just had to drive around a bit during this beautiful storm and then stop for lunch at Mother’s.  Ohmygoodness, huge snow flakes were coming down.  It stuck for a few minutes but melted as it turned to a gentle rain.  Thanks to Wil Parent for sending his noon time Birch Hill view our way.

Jim Mendenhall came in the restaurant as we were finishing up today.  He said in 1975 he was sitting in our house with the owners at that time, Andy and Nel Ridge. It was mid to late June, as school had let out.  It really started snowing.  About six inches of snow accumulated pretty fast.  The road crew was out plowing but within about two hours, it had all melted as the ground was so warm.

Maybe we’ll get a nice snow in June, too!

Smoke OK on Crestline this Sunday

From: Rick Over  Subject: Burn permit heads up

Just wanted to pass along to the community, that I have a burn permit signed off by the FS.  It will begin on May 17 (this Sunday) and extend to May 31. Conditions permitting, I plan to do a control burn on my cabin property (21850 Crestline, at Road Marker 6) this Sunday.  Looks like it will be a good weather window.  Of course I have to clear it through the FS on the morning of the burn. Please pass this info along on the Mountain News.  I don’t want to alarm anyone when they see and/or smell the smoke.  As I did before, all safety precautions will be taken.  Just FYI, allowed burn times are 0800-1500.

Thanks

Rick Over

May is the new January??!?

100 snow   So, did this little 100% snow pic get your attention?  NOAA forecast tells us that we may get snow along with some rain, but only a tiny dusting of that white stuff on Crestline today (none at our house on State Park Road).  So sad.

robs dusting

Thanks Rob Hawk for the peek at your snow!

Enjoy the storm!

Mother’s Day Tradition on Palomar

A few days ago a mom called.  Chris said she and her three, now-college age sons, have a tradition of camping in Doane Valley on Mother’s Day weekend.  They always have a great time fishing, hiking, eating ’round the campfire and sleeping in their tents.

However, this stressed-out mom had just seen the forecast saying SNOW was heading our way!  Could that be true?!???  The cabin rentals she checked on were all booked and she was hoping I could find her another option.

An option was found.  They bundled up and left Orange County Thursday morning to come to the mountain for their annual adventure.  It was decided that she would ‘try it’ at the campsite.  However, if the weatherman turned out to be right, she’d pop by our place and I’d show them to nice, warm and dry accommodations.

A few hours later a car coming from the direction of the State Park pulled in our driveway.  One of her sons had volunteered to deliver his mom to a cabin where she could be warm and dry. I had to laugh when she said he would be going back to camp with his brothers.  Standing in front of the warm fire in the cabin, he quickly replied that he wouldn’t want his mom to stay alone and since there was an extra bed (and internet!), he would stay with Mom.

His two brothers braved the storm Thursday. They said they got up in the middle of the night to tie down more tarps as they were really getting wet.  Those guys sure seemed to appreciate bunking with mom last night.

We’re in a cloud now. Damp and cold. Mom and Sons packed up with extra jackets and gloves, hoping for a successful time ’round the pond scoring some trout for dinner (in a nice, warm cabin).

I’m guessing this mom and son’s tradition just may include camping in a cabin on this special weekend for years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day to All!
