Smoke OK on Crestline this Sunday

From: Rick Over  Subject: Burn permit heads up

Just wanted to pass along to the community, that I have a burn permit signed off by the FS.  It will begin on May 17 (this Sunday) and extend to May 31. Conditions permitting, I plan to do a control burn on my cabin property (21850 Crestline, at Road Marker 6) this Sunday.  Looks like it will be a good weather window.  Of course I have to clear it through the FS on the morning of the burn. Please pass this info along on the Mountain News.  I don’t want to alarm anyone when they see and/or smell the smoke.  As I did before, all safety precautions will be taken.  Just FYI, allowed burn times are 0800-1500.

Thanks

Rick Over

May is the new January??!?

100 snow   So, did this little 100% snow pic get your attention?  NOAA forecast tells us that we may get snow along with some rain, but only a tiny dusting of that white stuff on Crestline today (none at our house on State Park Road).  So sad.

robs dusting

Thanks Rob Hawk for the peek at your snow!

Enjoy the storm!

Mother’s Day Tradition on Palomar

A few days ago a mom called.  Chris said she and her three, now-college age sons, have a tradition of camping in Doane Valley on Mother’s Day weekend.  They always have a great time fishing, hiking, eating ’round the campfire and sleeping in their tents.

However, this stressed-out mom had just seen the forecast saying SNOW was heading our way!  Could that be true?!???  The cabin rentals she checked on were all booked and she was hoping I could find her another option.

An option was found.  They bundled up and left Orange County Thursday morning to come to the mountain for their annual adventure.  It was decided that she would ‘try it’ at the campsite.  However, if the weatherman turned out to be right, she’d pop by our place and I’d show them to nice, warm and dry accommodations.

A few hours later a car coming from the direction of the State Park pulled in our driveway.  One of her sons had volunteered to deliver his mom to a cabin where she could be warm and dry. I had to laugh when she said he would be going back to camp with his brothers.  Standing in front of the warm fire in the cabin, he quickly replied that he wouldn’t want his mom to stay alone and since there was an extra bed (and internet!), he would stay with Mom.

His two brothers braved the storm Thursday. They said they got up in the middle of the night to tie down more tarps as they were really getting wet.  Those guys sure seemed to appreciate bunking with mom last night.

We’re in a cloud now. Damp and cold. Mom and Sons packed up with extra jackets and gloves, hoping for a successful time ’round the pond scoring some trout for dinner (in a nice, warm cabin).

I’m guessing this mom and son’s tradition just may include camping in a cabin on this special weekend for years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day to All!

mcfarland

Have you seen McFarland yet?  A GREAT must-see movie we really enjoyed a couple weeks ago.  Alumni from that school, including a guy from the movie, came in one minute and 39 seconds faster than the second place team.  (Wow, close race!!!) Here’s the news of the McFarland winners of Sunday’s race with the finish line at the top of Palomar Mountain: http://www.turnto23.com/news/local-news/mcfarland-alumni-win-badwater-salton-sea-2015-race

I would also loooove to see you at Badwater Presents Mustang Trail Race in Nepal this October 17-31. The Mustang region where our eight-day stage race will take place was not affected by the recent earthquake. However, the people of Nepal could use the positive economic impact of our race and racers, and the positive PR that “Nepal is still open for business” is an important message we will help spread. Do you have propane?

a propane

Have a little story for you.  On the phone last week, I was talking about smoke detectors.  I made the comment that I didn’t think we had them in our place on Palomar.  (Imagine that, a Realtor, with no smoke detectors?!??).  We bought our place in 1998 and I just never remembered seeing any.  Fast forward a few days.  Wandering around at the mountain house, I looked up in the top peek above the stairs, sure enough, there was a smoke detector.  Then I found a few more.

However, we did not have any smoke detectors in our bedrooms.  California now requires smoke detectors in living areas and bedrooms, too, since someone might sleep with their door closed. You are also to have carbon monoxide detectors installed in kitchens.

The cowboy that I live with was in the city, so I gave him a call.  He came home with a couple units that I’d never seen before: Smoke detectors with a 10 year battery life!  And, carbon monoxide detectors that also protect against propane or natural gas leaks.  That makes a lot of sense since we are in a pretty active earthquake area and most cabins use propane for cooking, water heaters, and now some wonderful propane fireplaces ’round the mountain, too.

The propane detection is not part of the “rules” for real estate, but seem very important to me.  Just thought I’d pass the info on, as some of you might want to update your units, like we just did.

(Yes, there is still snow. Couple inches max. Now, not much – very wet and slushy.  Roads are totally clear. Very lovely in front of the fire…).

May on the Mountain

babe in the snow

A certain cowboy I know asked me to take a pic of his truck this morning.  He said to post it to show his family and friends, down south in Carolina, what it is like in California today.

Thought some of you subscribers on to the Palomar Mountain News might like to see what is happening ’round the mountain, too!

Time to get those sleds out!
