Nate Harrison archaeological project

peter

Peter has been a wealth of information on the history of Palomar Mountain.  He and his wife Kathy had a cabin up here until a few years ago.  However Peter’s still giving back to our community by collecting historical gems of this mountain.  I saw Peter’s post on Facebook about this archaeological dig at Nate Harrison’s and asked him for info to share.  Thank you Peter!  Here is his latest:

News item on resumption of Nate Harrison archaeological site work:

Dr. Seth Mallios of the San Diego State University Anthropology Department, has resumed archaeological excavations at the Nate Harrison cabin site, located at Harrison Serenity Ranch on Nate Harrison Grade. With the permission of owner Vicki Morgan, Mallios and students have been excavating Nate’s porch area outside his cabin’s front door during the spring semester, on Saturdays and during Spring Break. After an eight year pause to Mallios’ Nate Harrison archaeological project, SDSU’s Assocation of Anthropology Students was awarded a grant from the SDSU Student Success Fee, reopening the project for 2017. Students will present some of the artifacts at Montezuma Hall on the SDSU campus, from 4 to 6 p.m. on April 18 [see https://www.facebook.com/events/245529775917941/ ]

Harrison Serenity Ranch is available for booking stays, hosting weddings and events, etc…. see http://www.harrisonserenityranch.com/

Justin and Beth – New Neighbors!

IMG_2404

Down on one knee, Justin, proposed in Kennedy Meadows.  Beth said “yes!” and a storm was coming in so they pulled up stakes.  Called a few friends and met up at Fry Creek on Palomar to celebrate their engagement for a couple days. Needless to say, Justin and Beth love nature, hiking, Palomar – and each other!

They met on line… and then found their property on line.  “It all happened pretty fast!”, Justin said.  “We weren’t planning to buy anything – just looking – but couldn’t resist”.  Their land-with-a-view and a little cabin is their ‘paradise’ to get away from city life where Justin works doing marine electronics on yachts.  Beth is a cardiac rehab nurse and working on her masters nursing so their property with good internet is perfect for her studies while Justin tackles the plans and projects.

Welcome Justin and Beth!

How to avoid running out of Propane – like we did!

propane 3   propane 2

We are on set up with our propane company to keep our tank topped off.  When they are in the area, they fill it up as we don’t ever want to go below 30% and run out of fuel.  So, it was a surprise when the stove wouldn’t light and we had no hot water.

Checking the gauge on the tank we were on empty!  Allstate to the rescue!  Ben brought up some fuel and checked and repaired our gauge.  The tank date is 1979 so the rubber washer had cracked, the screws were rusty and we had a slow leak that emptied our tank!$!

Ben said when they service tanks, they always spray the fittings with a solution to see if any bubbles appear pointing to a leak.  Then they tighten the screws.  All winter the gaskets expand and contract, over time the screws rust and the rubber gaskets break down and cause the propane to leave the tank. He said they have the most repairs in the spring.

I’ve never experience this happening before.  However, I realize some cabins are so rarely used that they could be leaking and you’d not even know.  Ben shared how you can check your propane tank yourself.

propane 1

It is simple to check your tank.  Put a cup of water in a pistol grip sprayer.  Squirt in some of your favorite dish soap.  Give it a shake. Go out with a paper towel to your propane tank and spray around the fittings.  No bubbles?  You’re good.  See any bubbles? Tighten it down if you can and call for repair.  The only way that little gasket and screws can be replaced is to have a totally empty tank.  The company can drain it for you, do the repair and you’ll be all set.

Also, you should always keep dirt and leaves cleared away from the tank.  It shouldn’t have any metal to earth contact as it can rust out.  Spring cleaning project!

You’re welcome!

Rustic Bathroom Ideas

rusticbathroom-1

Woodworking enthusiasts sure had fun creating these rustic bathrooms!  With all the remodeling sweeping this mountain, I am guessing some of you just might pull ideas from this delightful link: http://www.wwideas.com/2017/02/20-rustic-bathroom-ideas/

We should have cabin tours!  Quite a few new Sold signs lately.  Great things are happening!

If you’re on the mountain tonight, you’ve got your fire going watching the clouds settle in.  Enjoy!

Caught on Game Cams!

GCNov26U (75).JPG

Neighbors have a game cam and caught a certain cowboy I live with riding through with his granddaughters on their horses.  The camera also captured this guy on video, scouting the same trail. (If the video doesn’t play for you, please click on the subject of this post to go to the on-line page, worth it to see a pretty healthy mountain lion).  Careful out there!  Make noise and don’t hike alone.

Doug’s Life on Palomar

IMG_1457 sm  IMG_1459 sm

Doug wrote out just a little of his adventures growing up at the Observatory and going to the little one-room school.  Doug Anderson – Life on Palomar   Yes, that car was a Christmas surprise from the machine shop, built in the early 1960’s!

See more of Greg and Doug’s adventures

I’ve been around these brothers enough to hear a lot more stories.  Hope to have more to share real soon.  Who else has early Palomar tales?  Glad to turn them around!
