Boucher Hill Lookout lookin’ good!

Hello Lookout Team,

We began grounds restoration at Boucher Hill Lookout in Palomar Mountain State Park on Saturday, Feb 25th. Here’s a look at what we accomplished!

The area for the weather instrument frame was cleared of vegetation and leveled. The frame is an 8×16 enclosure of 4×4 rail fence that will be painted white. The original instrument shelter and a Davis weather station will be installed within. A walkway will be provided outside the frame.

We began to dismantle the stone rubble “tail” on our traffic arrow. The tail was installed sometime after original construction to facilitate a new style CDF Sign, probably in the mid-1970’s. We are bringing the arrow back to its original 1950’s configuration and will install a sign similar to the original. We were able to knock down most of the exterior tail section while saving the stone used to construct it for future needs. We removed vegetation and  excavated a trench in the center of the arrow for our eventual sign installation.

We removed non-native vegetation from around the parking lot. New plantings of native vegetation will occur later.

We had the Senior Photographer for State Parks visit while we were working along with a photographer for San Diego Magazine. A hike to Boucher Hill should be featured in the magazine in the issue after next.

Thanks to our great FFLA team who helped move forward the process of re-opening Boucher Hill Lookout! We have much more do…please join us!

Don’t forget your trainings coming up on March 17th (State Parks), April 7th (veterans) or April 14th & 21st (new volunteers).

Best regards,

Brad Eells,
