Let’s “take the Mountain to John” for his Birthday!

Last of the Old-Time Outlaws: The George Musgrave Story

Many of you know John and Karen Tanner but some of you don’t. Here is a brief introduction. Let’s take the Mountain to John for his birthday on Saturday!

John and Karen were such a pleasure to meet a few years ago at the Fire Department Barbecue.  They donated copies of their books that they’d written to the auction.   Of course, I had to read them and do believe everyone out there that likes the Mountain, would love their books!  In fact, Palomar at one time was a pretty good hideout for some of those types of guys they write about!

John bought his cabin on Crestline about 35 years ago.  He was living on the mountain when he met his wife Karen. They’ve been married over 22 years now and among many other things, they did co-author a book and each has written alone. Click for a quick introduction to the authors and some folks who have had a love affair with Palomar for many years!

Several months ago John’s femur broke and he ended up with two broken arms and a broken leg as a result of multiple myeloma. He spends most of his time in an electric wheel chair with danger that another bone will break. He has been on chemotherapy for a long time now and is being tested to qualify for a drug trial. He would love to come to the mountain but isn’t able to.

Let’s take the Mountain to John!  Please take a minute to send a quick photo of you, your family, or a favorite view of the Mountain we all love. See Karen’s message below and let’s all send a note to John beginning tomorrow when the party starts after 5 pm!

Hello everybody,

You are invited to a “Virtual Birthday Party” for John Tanner on Saturday, October 2nd at 5:00 P.M. (Pacific Standard Time) or later. This surprise party will last until the final email arrives.  As many of you know, John has been ill and, because of that, he is unable to entertain in person. Therefore, I am having a virtual birthday party for him that you can only attend by sending an email with your good wishes and, if you can, attach a photograph of yourself raising a glass to toast John.

I am emailing this to our family and friends all over the country—and some out of the country—in hopes that John’s email box will overflow with good wishes. He will be thrilled and very surprised. I hope that he will receive hundreds of birthday greetings. If by chance you are in contact with someone who knows John but has not received this, please pass it on to your friends and family. I have raided John’s email box but may have missed someone important.

Remember, this is a surprise party and do not send your email before 5:00 P.M. on October 2.  John’s email address is: jdtanner@aol.com

I hope that this virtual party is a huge success. I will be here at home and join in your group toast.

Until then,

Karen Tanner

PS  If anyone wants to email but won’t be available Saturday night, they can email me khtanner@aol.com and I will forward them to John on Saturday night.  Thank you!
