Pretty big storm headed our way! Rosemary has been so great about passing on the news to the Mountain News for years now – keep reading about the latest wet weather for the Mountain. Wow, just a couple years ago we had about that much rain in a YEAR! You are always welcome to dry out by our fire… and maybe even have a cup of hot soup!

From: Rosemary Johnston Subject: Fw: Barrage of rain & high surf for Central & South CA coming
My cousin Bruce Rose is a meteorologist for the Weather Channel…. http://www.signonsandiego.com/myweather/
And here it comes … this will indeed be a double-edged sword … the drought in the Southwest has been increasing, and the upcoming dramatic pattern change will help with that thanks to all the rain and mountain snow, but too much rain too quickly would cause flash flooding and mudslides …
Palomar Mountain could get even 24 inches of rain over the next week. Take a look at the forcast:
A Barrage of rain and high surf for Central & South CA is coming soon. A series of rain pulses accompanied by high surf will begin Monday. Waves will NOT be good for surfing, but will cause coastal erosion. Rains will be welcome, but some is likely to end up causing flooding in portions of Southern CA if current models are correct….here is my current synthesis of what will happen.
Central CA Southern CA
Monday 1/18 18-25’ 9-12’ RAIN
Tuesday 1/19 20-25’ 12-18’ RAIN LATE
Wednesday 1/20 22-28’ 15-20’ (very large for these locations) RAIN
Thursday 1/21 25-30’ 16-22’ (very large for these locations) RAIN
Friday 1/22 18-24’ 18-24’ (very large for these locations) LT RAIN
Wave heights in read are very large for these areas (especially in Southern California), and “if” they verify will result in significant beach erosion with some coastal flooding/damage of low lying roads. Water rise along the coast from these high waves will be 1-3 feet above normal astronomical tides which will exacerbate coastal erosion and the threat for coastal flooding. The duration of the series of wave “pulses” lasting more than 3 days will give erosion a long time to work on beaches.
This is all a classic El Nino pattern for January.
KEEP IN MIND THESE ARE FORECAST IN THE 3 TO 7 DAY TIME FRAME AND ACCURACY DROPS QUICKLY WITH TIME, SO SIGNIFICANT ADJUSTMENTS WILL LIKELY BE NECESSARY. BUT THIS IS A HEADS UP THAT CALIFORNIA SHOULD SEE SOME SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS FROM WEATHER/WAVES OVER THE NEXT WEEK.
