5. From: Sean Murray

I just had a company come up to the house to fix our heater. They were really marvelous and affordable. I had a hard time getting anyone to return my calls about coming up here to fix the furnace and this company came up without any hesitation. They are based in Escondido. Their name is Willey Heating and Air, their phone number is 760-489-6018. I would recommend them to anyone and thought including them on your yellow pages page might be a great addition to service providers up here.

6. FREE TV On another note: we have a really nice 32″ Sony XDR television that we can give to anyone who would like it. It’s a large screen and pretty big, it’s not a flat screen, but if someone need a nice tv for their cabin or home, it’s theirs for the taking.

Subject: 5 Msgs! 1000 trees per acre, State Park OPEN, Furnishing ideas needed, Brad’s update, and more

Hello Everyone,

The Mountain News has been tagged as a spammer! Imagine that! Apparently right at 1000 of you folks have subscribed to this free service, but because of the spam patrols out there, a new mail service is being set up to keep the Mountain News heading your way. Meanwhile, I’m combining messages and breaking up the group list hoping the News goes through!

1. Subject: Gold spotted oak borer website launched! http://groups.ucanr.org/GSOB/index.cfm Questions or comments? Contact Jan Gonzales, jggonzales@ucdavis.edu

2. In some areas of Palomar, I’ve been told we have 1000 trees per acre… Keep reading From: Robert Gonsett [mailto:cgc@cgc333.connectnet.com]
The CGC Communicator newsletter covered The Station Fire — the biggest fire ever recorded in Los Angeles County. Most of our coverage concerned the protection of the peak of Mt. Wilson that supports the Mt. Wilson Observatory and most of the FM and TV transmitters for Los Angeles. Following are a Letter to the Editor and a news article slated for publication in the next Communicator. You are welcome to use them if they would be of interest to your readers. Best regards, Bob Gonsett, Fallbrook, CA

*** REDUCING TREE DENSITY FROM 400 TO 40 PER ACRE [Concerning the Station Fire], I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion on how to prevent this from happening again. Clear cutting…around the top of Mt. Wilson might be a good idea, but there may be a better way. A few years ago, a Forest Service study determined that a healthy forest should have only 40 trees per acre. Most untouched forests have 400 trees per acre. This study was written up in the Smithsonian Magazine some years ago. In one forest, they thinned a section and waited for the next fire. Fire raced through the unthinned section and slowed to a crawl when it reached the thinned section. Less trees also make better use of available moisture…. Paul Sautter, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sautterp (at) aol.com

*** FIRE FIGHT With forests burning, U.S. officials are clashing with environmentalists over how best to reduce the risks of future catastrophic blazes. Fascinating article: http://tinyurl.com/yewe9n3

3. State Park will remain open!!! Rosemary sent the news link for us but alas, it is hidden from me at the moment! Good news, isn’t it!

Subject: Re: Finishing the Community Center Project

Well everyone, we are getting very close to finishing the work on the house at the fire station. Except for some last minute touch-up painting and a thorough cleaning the inside will be done after Allesio Heating installs the thermostat and grills on the duct openings. On the outside we need to finish the re-shingling work, and get it painted. This we hope to be done with in the next two weeks.

Through the efforts of our volunteers (several from off the mountain) we have expended the $50,000 grant money, plus another almost $4,000, on the materials needed for this effort.

What we need now is the money to buy the furniture to put into it to have it serve effectively as a community center. If you have not seen the house for awhile please stop by for a look. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the transition. While you are there you will find some papers on the outside entry stoop soliciting ideas on how to furnish the interior. If you have some thoughts, please let us know.

One major observation we made while working on the house is the adverse affect of rodents on the building proper and what furnishings that were in it. We will try the use of electronic repellers (possibly a cat) to control the rodents, but it suggests that overstuffed furnishings should be avoided. This leads me to suggest the use of Craftsman Period furniture, or similar, but here again your input is welcome.

As to how to contribute, you can send any gifts to the PMVFD, or to The Community Center of Palomar Mountain, PO Box 91, Palomar Mountain, CA 92060, ear marked as for furnishings.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Subject: Forest Fire Lookout Association – San Diego-Riverside Chapter Update…
Yes Lookout Fans… I know it has been awhile since your last update…my long 60 days of moving our office to Corona, photographing 22 high schools worth of football teams in 100 + degree heat and delivering more than 200,000 ID cards to local high schools and middle schools is almost over. I apologize for the quiet time but it has been my life for the last 29 years… So what is happening with our lookout program??? Plenty!

Reconstruction Grants We have applied for and soon hope to hear the results for grant applications to finish work at High Point and to pursue 4 other potential lookout site restorations and staffing. Stay tuned the next 30 days should bring outstanding news to the FFLA!

Grounding System Upgrades The Cleveland National Forest has made a decision to repair and upgrade the grounding systems on all three of its lookouts; High Point, Lyons Peak and Los Pinos. The work will commence shortly and should be complete before the end of our fire season. Thanks Cleveland National Forest!

Lyons Peak News Thanks to San Diego County Supervisor, Diane Jacob and the Cleveland National Forest, a resolution on the road issue at Lyons Peak is under way. The road may be accessible as soon as late Spring 2010! What does that mean to the FFLA? Another lookout project! Restoration Team…are you ready? We have as many as 20-25 volunteers ready to get involved with a green light at Lyons Peak.

Vetter Mountain Lookout Lost The massive Station Fire on the Angeles National Forest brought sad news to the Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association (ANFFLA). The 1935 built Vetter Mountain Lookout was lost in the fire. Pam Morey of the ANFFLA vows to rebuild. I have pledged our support in their efforts to resurrect the lookout. ANFFLA lost South Mount Hawkins Lookout to the Curve Fire 7 years ago. Slide Mount Lookout, near Pyramid Lake is the last of 22 lookouts originally located on the Angeles still standing. Cleveland’s own Carlton Joseph was Deputy Incident Commander on the fire.

A Visit with BRF My semi-annual trip to Fresno for the 5th ranked Boise State Broncos vs. Fresno State game happened the weekend of Sept 18-20. We started off the weekend with a 51-34 victory! We have always spent the following 2 days in Sequoia – Kings Canyon National Park. The park and the nearby Sierra and Sequoia National Forests are home to the Buck Rock Foundation who operate several lookouts in the area. I hiked to Park Ridge Lookout on Saturday afternoon. Park Ridge is a CL-30 on a 20 foot tower identical to High Point. Built in 1964 for the Park Service, I was surprised to find the exact floor tile and Formica in the lookout as we have on the Cleveland. There must have been a spec sheet to order the interior components at the time…ahhh…more research… My wife and I drove to world famous Buck Rock Lookout on Sunday. Buck Rock is set atop a 200 ft, high granite dome that requires a climb up a 172 step stairway. Those of you who think High Point is climb need to visit Buck Rock…the elevation is 2400 feet above High Point testing the cardio system further! My wife declined to make the climb. I was happy to ascend the stairs to a 1925 ground mounted 4A cab, one of only 3 left in California. I met the foundations director Kathy Ball, who you may have seen on an episode of “California’s Gold” with Huell Howser. Kathy runs a great program and is expanding the lookouts staffed in Central California. Go Kathy!

The Vail Fire and Santa Ana conditions While I was at Park Ridge Lookout on Saturday, the Vail Fire broke out almost directly beneath High Point. Volunteers Glenn and Barbie Shrier were on duty. They were ready to call in their smoke report when the alarm sounded…darn, we almost had a first report! The fire actually lead the national news on radio Sunday morning. The USFS and CalFire crews were able to contain the fire to 340 acres with 3 homes and some other structures lost. The Santa Ana conditions are upon us. Your help is needed now more than ever. Please take a look at your personal calendars to see what days you may have available for a shift. Thank you Glenn Shrier for offering a number of days in October based on Red Flag and Santa Ana conditions.

Training and Seasons End Due to my personal schedule, additional training for this season does not seem to be in the cards. I ask for patience from all of you who wish to join the program and get involved with High Point. We will offer several opportunities through our Chapter, The Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association and the San Bernardino National Forest Fire Association in the Spring…stay tuned for dates.

Volunteer Lookouts…don’t forget that our intrepid Engine 36 crew at Palomar Station are standing by to provide you with Fire Shelter training as you come off shift at High Point. Fire Shelter Training will be incorporated into our classroom training and reconnect sessions in 2010…get ahead of the curve and get trained now! A manual is located in the tower and a pdf file is loaded on the Yahoo Group site. The Palomar Crew may use a lasso to encourage you to get your training done…

We do intend to keep High Point open into November depending on weather conditions. Significant rain or snow will bring an end to the season. We do need to plan to button up the lookout, add our new shutters – courtesy of Joe Bressi and shut down for the Winter. So far, El Nino predictions are holding so we may have above average Winter precipitation…

I would like to plan a year end function…an appreciation and recognition gathering. I need some ideas…something on the mountain…or somewhere in San Diego…afternoon BBQ or evening dinner…black tie or casual??? You get the idea…please provide your feedback!

But what about Winter? Well…is Winter really Winter in Southern California??? Not really…except at high elevations. In January, our chapter will host the national FFLA Board of Directors meeting. We need to build our organization further and plan the use of grant funds for our projects…who wants to get involved? You do! I fully expect we will have an opportunity to restore and open at least one more lookout in 2010. We need to plan for training and staffing of High Point and that additional lookout. Please contact me with your interests for 2010. That’s all for now…remember, it is Santa Ana time…we need your help! Cheers, Brad Eells
